Honesty the only thing that Nines does better then Sevens is having players and teams with bigger profiles.. Seven's is superior In every other aspect.

While true, 7s is played by specialists as opposed to the 9s but how often do we hear from the League mob about the inherent level of skill in there game in comparison to ours. You'd think that given even more time and space they'd be able to show off more than just the stock standard one off runs etc.

Isn't that the point? To entertain with expansive play afterall 9s whether they admit it or not is meant to compete with 7s.

I wonder if the World Series is packaged with the rest of the rights as it would be great to get this event on FTA TV.

I'm not sure. I don't think Sevens is that good a TV product.

Sure the game itself is great, but the format of the day doesn't suit TV viewing. You watch a game with your team, then have to wait three hours until the next one. Half the games on day 1 are floggings, and on day two most of the games are irrelevant.

The downtime is one of it's strengths at the ground itself, but it means you can't hold a TV audience for more than half an hour at a time.

It's much better suited to a 1-2 hour highlights package featuring Cup QFs, semis and final IMO.

At 55k and 110k on fox, we're a long way from any FTA channel wanting to pay good money to show it unfortunately.

They don't even want the cricket in NZ which did close to 300k

Even allowing for some average D, that's one freakin' awesome try & he's got plenty more like it on his highlights reel.

Really it was one bloke who fucked up, stepping across too far where there was cover. Once Johnson gets into a broken field, he's hard to stop.

In terms of the games themselves, because rugby is more technical, the 7s and 15s will diverge further in terms of player ability and fitness, particularly as the Olympic status changes things substantially.

Whereas, to me, the League 9s game is a better version of 13-a-side because there is more space for players to be creative. Otherwise its almost exactly the same bar a couple of minor law changes around time, and knocks-on. Probably easier for all but the heaviest NRL players to adapt to, and so it must be due to the pre-season nature of it.

Don't think we'll see George Rose out there any time soon ;)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ also the Clubs are only allowed a handful of non-first graders in their squads. I'd be surprised if that lasts, tho, there's already coaches talking about player welfare & workload (like they give a shit). Won't be long before it's mostly U21's, NSW & Q Cup players plus some oldies. After that I give it three years max before it goes the way of the Indigenous All Stars "fixture".

Isn't that more to do with SKY owning the rights in NZ & their being almost a subsidiary of Foxtel? If NZ had similar anti-siphoning laws to yours, maybe it'd be on Nine instead (not that I'm complaining commentary-wise).

As far as I know there is no link between Sky and Fox anymore, Newscorp sold their share a couple of years ago.

The cricket rights to show the Sky telecast will just be sold to the highest bidder in Australia - if any FTA station wanted it they could outbid Foxtel and get it. Nobody has really been interested in showing any non-Ashes cricket for a while (and even that was on SBS recently) cause it doesn't rate well enough for the cost, and it rates well above sevens.

often discussion comes up of 'rugby vs league' games, which always fall over due to many valid reasons.

To those people who push for these games, surely the difficulties are greatly reduced when we think of the (trying to think of the word here) 'shortened' version of the game? (shortened is the wrong word, what is the correct term??)
I mean, scrum danger is greatly reduced for a start.

Suppose the argument then would be how many players, seven or nine and once again it would be a non starter.

The 9's still has the 10m defensive line which means the same tactic of one out runners is the most effective and risk-free tactic to make ground. I think 9's would be better with say a 5m rule as then the teams would have to use the ball a lot more. That or a reduced tackle count.

I think the 9's may struggle over the longer term though as it loses its novelty. The clubs are already getting annoyed about injuries and will keep pushing to reduce the number of 1st graders they have to select in their squads. The same things eventually killed off the rugby league world sevens event that they used to have.

Nick McArdle tweeted that 255K watched the final of the 7's. That's an impressive figure.

How does one get the worldwide viewing figures for the Sydney Sevens and Auckland Nines?

It is a global marketplace.

You spend a large amount of time trawling through similar ratings announcements for each country.

Or you wait and hope someone else does the legwork which I'd guess is unlikely to happen for an event like this.

Whilst it is about the global audience and that favours rugby, one of our problems is the relatively small size of the audience here and that impacts our ability to have a product that is viable on FTA.

Yes, but the NBL isn't a big ratings winner and they have games on FTA. What might be necessary is essentially doing something similar to what the Shute Shield did with its season this year.

Produce the broadcast via a partner and supply it directly to a FTA channel. Look to recoup much of the costs via advertising etc.

It may not be possible with the World Series but I think there's an opportunity to develop other Rugby properties in the next few years especially with 7s making its Olympic debut. Could even be done to fit a 3 hr window if necessary.

But that is in the absence of other opportunities.

There is money coming from Foxtel which can't realistically be turned down and instead pay to have the games broadcast. There's also the other matter that it might only work if you played outside of prime time because the ratings aren't good enough to be on the FTA channels during prime time.

It's a difficult problem to solve. We are also competing heavily to retain our best players in Australia so doing everything we can to ensure we generate as much revenue as possible is critical. International basketball doesn't hold nearly the importance of international rugby so there is less desire to keep our best players playing here so they are all together. In fact, any player who can find an opportunity overseas in basketball is going to take it because the competition and the remuneration will be better.

Just focussing on sevens, who is the rights owner? I was under the impression that world Rugby own the series and sell it on to the broadcasters.

If that's the case, presumably the ARU would have to compensate WR (World Rugby) for lost revenue if foxtels exclusivity was taken from them?
