Lions vs Reds Rd 6 2014

Problem with the scrums is that he is giving the a 30cm gap. The point of the new scrum laws is to remove the gap completely. Yellow cards will ensure at this rate unless it's changed.

Lions vs Reds Rd 6 2014

Funnily enough that is what Lyndon Bray ruled during the week. In this scenario though, he's saying after the ball was stripped Horwill had a crack at the ball in mid air and knocked it on. Close call though, I'd understand both teams claiming to be hard done by with that outcome. Just happy...

Lions vs Reds Rd 6 2014

Love the commentator's observation. "Just so you know if you have tuned in late, we're calling the guys in white "the reds..."

Big up's to the hospitality as well. Glad to find the James Squire Copper Ale this week being served as an alternate to Hahn Super Dry.

    Force v Chiefs Rnd 6 2014

Wow, teams were pretty evenly matched (and the cheifs playing pretty poorly by their standards), but the difference was that man #7 Matt Hodgeson. For a 32 year old he was absolutely everywhere. Every 2nd breakdown he was having a crack at the ball. At the line out's he was desperate to make...

Correct, a tackle can occur if a player on his feet holds a ball carrier on the ground. In other words, you can have a tackle with no tackler, in this scenario we call the 'player who is holding the ball carrier' a "tackle assist", he still must release the tackled player. And IS is correct...

    Brumbies vs Stormers S15 Round 6 2014

That was a pretty old school first phase try, got Stephen Larkham's name all over it!

    Refereeing decisions

A tackle occurs when a ball carrier is brought to ground and held. Once a ball carrier has been tackled, he must release the ball. Peyper ruled he had been brought to ground and that he didn't release the ball. The call was touch and go on the replay but the refs only get one look at it. As a...

    Refereeing decisions

Andre Watson has asked the IRB to clarify that position of Bray's about the knock on, it was the most contentious of them all due to the imprecise nature of the tackle/rip so it should be referred to the top. http://superxv.com/41898/1/saru-refer-lions-tmo-try-ruling-to-the-irb#.UywD5vmSySo

    Western Force 2014

Godwin attracts 2 or 3 players every time he runs at the line. Even though he isn't getting through, it's that sort of threat that is drawing in defenders and creating space out wide. He could remain this "quiet" the entire season and he'd be doing more of a service to the team than if he was...

Super Rugby - The comp where you can knock the ball on without actually knocking it on! Only joking, the important thing is they've given all refs a guide from here on in.

    Sharks v Reds Rnd 5 2014

I think they're paid per game by SANZAR, to be a full time ref the ARU/SARU/NZRU would need to employ them separately. I don't know for sure, but I think guys like Joubert and Peyper from SA are full time refs, Jackson from NZ, Walsh from Aus (but I think he still has a job apart from reffing)...

    Sharks v Reds Rnd 5 2014

Well the ref initiated the conversation. When JdP wont listen he simply ends it. Hard to see a problem. Good to see them trying to talk props out of penalties rather than just blowing the scrums up for reasons the front rowers don't understand.

    Refereeing decisions

For better or worse the IRB doesn't define every word of their publications regarding law, it's generally at the refs discretion. This has been clarified though, in an obvious case of the ball ripped by the defender a knock on should not be called against the attacker. That's generally the...

    Refereeing decisions

I don't think a "rip" is defined. All that matters is that if the ball is lost forward in the tackle, but the tackler clearly caused it to go forward. Play on. JK said he'd get this clarified in the middle of a rant about how they've been done over 3 weeks in a row now. He'll just be forwarded...

    Sharks v Reds Rnd 5 2014

Implementing such a system can only lead to more bad performances than the current set up. If we aim to eliminate as many bad decisions as possible, we should not restrict the pool of referees for inter-country games to the 7 or 8 guys who happen to be on the national panel of the neutral...

    Sharks v Reds Rnd 5 2014

So it's OK to post "condescending rubbish" about referees, but not to post condescending responses to it? Sounds legit.

Hit them hard so they drop it. That's about the only way I can think of.

    Refereeing decisions

Only saw the Lion's highlights. That definitely wasn't a knock on by Red, good decision to award the try. Re Hooper; the ball came loose in the tackle due to reasons other than being stripped or knocked. A white hand may have touched the ball but I don't think it would get called a "knock"...
