    Rugby in the Pacific Islands

They'd probably care in the inverse if anything - an event, then a future commitment. Possibly deliberate in a pro-Australia sort of way.

China isn’t a strategic competitor in domestic rugby

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Hard one for them - vote against and have the rug pulled out from under you - play along and have the same happen. The federated voting structure doesn’t really provide much cover when 10/16 votes pretty much rely on the status quo for support.

Tim North. The only way I could see it is if they showed RA's conduct to have been unconscionable or whatever the correct term is and forced them into insolvency by withholding monies due to trigger the hand back of the license. Feels like a long shot and MRRU would be more of a hollowed-out...

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

I don’t really expect they’ll be able to do so much beyond 2024 at this point regardless of what happens.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

I am really confused right now as to how the Rebels are operating. It’s been reported we handed the licence back to RA, so I assume this means that MRRU can’t be the vehicle which the team is playing under. This is supported by the liquidation extensions. If a report was due to be handed down...

And if that is found to be the case it’s the Rebel’s directors’ fault how? Who oversaw the drafting of sloppy contracts? It’s also $2m for that, $6m in underfunding.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

If $8m is going to bring RA down I’d be looking at a succession of people out of a certain Sydney boys school ahead of the former directors of the Rebels.

There are two entities - NSWRU Limited which has the lease on their books, and Waratahs Limited which had essentially no non-current assets and is the entity which seems to have come under the management of RA.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Looks like $10.9m of current and $186k of non-current. Thats against $7.5m of current liabilities (2022 reports). I'm assuming they didn't need a bail out because they had $3m cash in the bank, so looks like they've been torching cash at a rapid pace also.

    Australian Rugby / RA

Possibly the neatest summation of those who run Rugby Australia I have seen.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Openly stating they don’t intend to fulfil their obligations for 2025 under the broadcast agreement? It’s one thing to negotiate that in the background ‘without prejudice’, another to come out and make a unilateral public proclamation without the consent of 9.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

The broadcast deal would likely prevent them doing so - imagine giving 9 a chance to renegotiate after the World Cup debacle. Possibly also arrangements with the Victorian Government.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Makes sense - drag it out and see how many supporters you can disenfranchise. Regardless of outcome we’ll have no players or coaches in 2025, but I guess that will make it easier to justify RA’s decision.

    Australian Rugby / RA

To be fair the organisation has been performing well, have a proper independent commission and have a history of solid succession planning. Gil was Demetriou’s right hand

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Twiggy is a given. Put the ATO money aside, we’ll just continue the narrative that the directors are incompetent buffoons who couldn’t have any idea what racking up $10m+ of debt to the ATO meant for them personally. There is still $6m they contributed to keep the team going.
  17. stoff

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

It kept the team going and they’re going to be paying for it. $17m of tax debt and loans has got to be a few years worth.

Loans and personal liabilities (ATO etc)

They’re in for $17m or so - can’t think of many other groups tipping that much in to rugby.

They need certainty for broadcasters, and to avoid the club having no players or staff well before 12 months. Also there’s that second part of the sentence of yours I quoted…
