    Shute Shield 2017

Did you read my earlier post? What's the Spring Tour got to do with the timing of the NRC?

    Shute Shield 2017

How can you say that when the NRC draw hasn't been released yet? As per my earlier post (#422), there wouldn't be enough players for the NRC if it started before the various Premier rugby comps finished unless you think the SS is going to play the finals' series without all the NRC players...

    Shute Shield 2017

I'm getting very confused by people suggesting the SS and NRC will clash. How can they? There wouldn't be enough players for the NRC without club players from Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, etc. The NRC will surely not start until the various Premier comps finish. To suggest that the SRU have come...

    No NRC draw there

Have I missed something? Has the 2017 NRC draw been announced? What makes you think the SS will conflict with the NRC? I can't see the ARU allowing that to happen.

I assume this is the final version: http://www.randwickrugby.com.au/news/news-2016/5435-2017-shute-shield-draw-now-available

    Shute Shield 2017

The grade cricket season preliminary rounds finishes on 11/3/17 and the SS started on 19/3 this year. So the 4 (?) clubs who share grounds with cricket may have to play their fist few games away which is not ideal but has happened in the past when cricket semis were being played. Dare I suggest...

    Shute Shield 2017

I completely agree, but every team aspires to make the playoffs as their first goal and the draw shouldn't make this harder for some teams than others. The current system can also impact on the club championship results. I really haven't heard a good reason from anyone to justify NOT having...

    Shute Shield 2017

I can't remember what the rationale was, or if I ever knew, but I've never been happy with it. Every year I look at the draw and note which teams have to play the previous year's playoff teams twice, which teams play the bottom teams twice, etc, and think this is so not a level playing field...

    Shute Shield 2017

Because the current system is unfair. Some teams play the weaker teams twice and others only once so we don't have a level playing field. Plus the extra 4 rounds provides more rugby across all the grades and colts for us club rugby tragics.

    Shute Shield 2017

Hi RC, I agree with a lot of your comments above. I can't speak for all clubs but as far as Randwick are concerned I believe we see the club's role is to provide a vehicle for anyone good enough to play rugby across the 4 grade and 3 colt teams and, at the same time, produce players for higher...

    Shute Shield 2017

RC, could you provide some examples of the types of changes that the SS has refused to contenance? Since I started watching the SS (about 40 years ago) I've seen the following changes: (1) reduction of teams ie 5th, 6th, 7th grades (2) increase in clubs ie Canberra, Newcastle briefly then...

Well done UK rugby -- can't wait for the ARU to do something similar

    Shute Shield 2017

I heard today that the NRL has increased funding to its grassroots by 65% from next year. Anyone know the equivalent increase (?) in rugby? I've read the above posts with great interest. I think Pappy and his supporters are concerned for the future and, while I don't agree with their suggested...

Maybe we need a restructure of the admin in NSW....no wait, we just did that, but I don't believe the Sydney RU got a mention. Hope it still exists, it's been so so effective

    Penrith Emus

And hopefully doesn't see a heap of Emus becoming Shoremen.

    Shute Shield 2017

Thinking more about this I suspect the ARU (in its infinite wisdom) would not allow it on the basis of "we didn't think of it".

    Shute Shield 2017

It would be interesting to see what sort of crowds the lower grades would draw in opposition to the NRC. I suspect the tribal aspect would have some influence. Not sure about the financials though --- would clubs be able to afford to put 6 teams on the field without the drawing power of the 1st...

    Shute Shield 2017

I agree Dave. Can even start the SS earlier if necessary. Cricket is not an issue as the clubs who share their grounds with cricket can play away for the first few rounds (which has happened in the past where grounds were required for cricket finals) or play at other grounds.

    Penrith Emus

By all accounts Huxley is a really nice guy whose heart's in the right place, but I suggest the Emus need a lot more than just another new coach to be competitive. I really hope I'm proved wrong, but I doubt it.
