Re - CHS. I don't know if they're ever going to get back to where they were. Now that kids can represent SJRU and the Country areas and compete directly with the school associations, I don't see a need for it and I suspect CHS eligible kids are voting with their feet. I'd imagine that the CHS team will become the fallback position for anyone who missed out on Club rep selection.

Other than a small handful of schools, they don't develop any talent and only provide a pathway. It's a real pity that Rugby is all but dead in the CHS system and I wish it wasn't the case.

It is why the move to U18s instead of a Schools base has the chance to be more comprehensive than the old model. A kid from a Public HS can be playing Colts Rugby and be picked from that over not having an avenue anymore in the CHS system. Rugby can circumvent the system.

So 1sts, 2nds, and 16A thru 13As.
I presume some form of weighting like the subbies club champs.

Will presumably also mean that CAS needs to keep more detailed records of the various As championships which historically have been more unofficial if I recall.

The weighting question has been asked a few times but I can't find any info on it either at CAS or ISA. I suspect that if there were weightings, it would have been mentioned in the communications?

From memory, there were a handful of Independent school kids who also accessed this pathway too last year.

I believe there is a Heads of Sport meeting next week which may shed a bit more light on how it will be calculated. I know some school advocated for As & Bs is every age group while others just wanted the As. No doubt the likes of Augies and Oakhill wanted to include as many grades as possible.

The more teams included in the calculation, the better the result will be schools that either have depth, quality coaching, or both. If you put all of your eggs into your As (or just 1sts) only then you'd be pushing hard for as few teams as possible to be factored in.

It will be very interesting to see how it pans out.

School HoR advised that it is weighted, with the weighting bias towards the opens and reducing down to 13A's. Interestingly I asked a few times about the specifics (ie. Is, for example, the 1st XV weighted at 50% or 20%), but never got a good response. Perhaps that detail is yet to be worked through?

I don't think it really matters too much, it seems pretty clear to me that the top 3 based on 1st, 2nd and A's teams are going to be Waverley, Knox & Barker for the foreseeable future. Sure Knox & Barker are relatively weaker in the 13-14As, but they 'correct' that problem by the 15A's.

I suppose that is a sensible approach. You'd hate to have a situation where a particular OPENS cohort that was weak has to duke it out with some heavy hitters because the 13s to 16s are strong.
