Apparently there will be a Women's National 15's Champs in Sydney in September.

Yes we got the info only a few weeks back about it. Sadly I've been ruled out for approx 6 months with a back injury so no glory for me.

Seems the ARU are pulling their finger out considering there's a RWC next year and we have no national XV program.

It's a shame we have no continuous XV provincial competition on the back of club rugby like as in NZ.

That's the difference why they are the world champions in 7s and XVs....


Kendra Cocksedge, Black Ferns halfback posted this up on twitter yesterday, would be a cracker of a series to watch as they were defeated 3-0 to the Poms in England last year. First time they lost a game - Ever.

There has been quite a bit of talk about the XV nationals here in Newcastle. It used to be a yearly thing but I think it is now every year before the WRWC or during the same year as the WRWC (not sure which way around that is). Point is it is not a yearly thing, which it should be. It is better than the alternative - which is nothing at all. However, I can see our scrum going up its own backside against most teams in the WRWC due to their more extensive concentration on XV's. I'd be very impressed if we could get 3rd again like last time as I believe our scrum will be even weaker next time.

Hi All,


Queensland Rugby is pleased to announce we will be taking a Queensland Women’s 15-a-side team to the National Championships in Sydney ( Wednesday 25th –Saturday 28th September). This Championship will play a major role in the Selection of the Wallaroo’s Squad to participate in the Women’s World Cup in France in 2014.

As part of the selection process for the Queensland team, we will be running a selection day at Ballymore open to all players interested. This will only form part of the selection process as players club performances throughout 2013 will also be taken into account.

Players who are interested in nominating for the Queensland side are asked to completed and return the attached form to Lachlan Parkinson (Lachlan.parkinson@qru.com.au ) by COB Friday 26th July 2013.

Below you will find the details of the Selection Trial and National Championship Information

Selection Trial

Date: Sunday 4th August

Time : 1pm to 4pm

Venue: Ballymore – 231 Butterfield Street Herston

Selection Day Structure – the day will involve both skill based stations and some opposed games. If players are injured they will be required to provide a medical certificate.

Nominations : as per above players must register their interest by returning the completed attached form by COB Friday 26th July.

Please Note: This will only form part of the selection process.

National Championships

Dates: Wednesday 25th September to Saturday 28th September 2013

Venue: St Ignatius College , Riverview , Sydney

Cost: $850 per player levy – includes flights, accommodation, food, strapping and playing gear. This will need to be paid immediately upon selection , if not paid in full by the due date the player will be removed from the squad.

Unfortunately they've managed to mis-spell her surname - we're trying to get them to fix that.

I've taken some time to observe Mopes and her co-coach Moala Polota-Nau (yes, another of the Polota-Nau's) and I can report they know what they are talking about!

Good win to Parramatta Womens team today. Still building to the semis, and still some work to be done.

Went out the the Qld Women's trials today. 39 ladies were put through drills and then played 3 x 15 min games. Lots of talent running around.

There's a game between Cairns and Townsville in 2 weeks time and the team for Nationals will be named after that.

Watched the Sunnybank v Redlands women's game. Was one of the better games of Rugby I have seen all year. The ref was a little out if his depth. The defence was excellent with some great charges by the Redlands #13 that required quality front on defence to negate.
Sunnybank won 10 - 7 to remain undefeated with a penalty goal from about 35m out and 20m from touch.

There is a training session at Ballymore tonight, 6:30-8:00, for anyone interested in making the Queensland Women's team. The sessions are open to all players this week and next before the squad is named on 19 August, after Cairns play Townsville.

So with the Women's RWC next year it is interesting to see how the different countries are preparing themselves.

Australia is holding a National Championships in Sydney next month, with the hope of selecting a group of players to contract up until the WRWC.

USA, Canada, England and RSA are playing in the Nations Cup in the USA with Canada beating England on the weekend to win.

NZ just had a 3 test series against the English (before the Nations Cup).

The Six Nations countries also hold an annual tournament aligned with the mens.

It would seem that every other country views Tests as the best preparation. With NZ so close and Samoa qualifying for the tournament you would like to think that the ARU would have learnt from the U20's and wanted some games before next year. A fair chunk of the Federal money for rugby development is based on the prospect of participating in the Olympic Womens Rugby 7's.

Is it unreasonable to expect roughly 1/2 the Federal money to be spent directly on the Women's Rugby programme (15's and 7's)?

It just seems that there isn't all that much cash being tipped into Women's Rugby.
