And then I see this on the front page of the blog

David Nucifora returns to ARU as consultant

so I click on the article link
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/spo...ru-as-consultant/story-e6frg7o6-1226647913958

But wait there's more: Look into the text of the article,

SIX months after resigning as the ARU's high-performance manager, David Nucifora has been re-employed by the national governing body as a coaching consultant.
Nucifora, who was also a Wallabies selector and coach of the Australian under-20s team, will act as a coaching consultant to the Australian women's sevens team, which is coached by Chris Lane and managed by Scott Bowen.

Never been a great fan of Nuci. Not sure that this will be a good move.

On Total Rugby show tonight there was a good feature on the Women's World 7's tournament in Amsterdam.

We were beaten by Russia - Sheee-it. 3 years left to Rio and there is a fair bit of work to be done if we want to have a podium finish.

Nice looking player for Canada in the Final vs the Darkness. She had more ink on her arms than our own Quade Cooper.

The Canadian Women's team have a nice calendar for sale too!

I know I'll sound like a downer but I don't like the fact that female sports people/athletes have to do these things to get money for their sport. That's my honest gut feelings about it.

That all being said I like that it is "tastefully nude", it still has the  factor but with a bit of mystery & class to it. Hopefully they'll get some much needed funds from it. I'll pass on the link.

I like this statement from the Canadian Women's Team Calendar "About" page

The national team is based out of Langford, B.C, where we train together for 5 months out of the year - January- June. We train full time in the gym, on the track, and on the pitch every day. In 2011 we were ranked #1 in the world, and in 2012 we have continued our success and most recently won gold at Amsterdam 7s. We are proud representatives from all across Canada who have come together for one goal - world domination.

Our Team is up against it in preparation for Rio. We need to get pretty serious pretty bloody quickly.

The result of a keenly contested Sydney Womens match between Parramatta and Sydney University at Merrylands RSL Club Rugby Park turned on an "after the bell" conversion attempt to Uni from fairly adjacent to the posts. It went under the bar and both teams went away feeling unsatisfied with a 10-10 draw, 2 tries apiece.

It's not just the women that do this in rugby

I know it isn't just women's rugby players that do nude calendars. That's not the point though.

Those male players are professionals who are well looked after, they are not in a position where they must do something like a nude calendar to raise funds so they can play rugby. The Canadian women's national rugby team feel that they have to explore this fund raising option to get funds so they can get equipment, cover travel expenses, etc. You've got two groups doing the same thing but for different reasons. Have you ever seen the Wallabies or the AB's be under so much financial pressure that they've had to strip down nude for a calendar to raise funds to cover the expenses of going to a test match or world cup?

Don't get me wrong Jets I'm still supportive of the Canadian girls & I think people should buy a calendar from them. But I wish people would just appreciate the difference between them doing it & the boys. Even if every one of those Canadian players liked doing the calendar that is also not the point. My view would be entirely different if the girls already had enough funds & publicity but just did the calendar entirely for charity.

My post was a bit flippant. I completely understand that they do the calendars for very different reasons.

The ironic thing is that, from my understanding, the Canadian women's rugby program receives more government funding than the men as they are much more likely to win a World Cup or Olympic Gold. Still not enough money for the players to survive on though.

Your point is obvious with respect to the All Blacks, AS, but it could be worth someone at St Leonards making a mental note of the Wallabies' nude calendar idea for future reference.

When your new national CEO's grand initiative for creating a 3rd Tier competition is to have the hit-shield-holders from the Australian provinces playing against one another in 25-minute-halves your future-year modelling needs to have a financial stringency element.

When your response to finishing 8th at last year's Under 20 World Championship is to have as your preparation this year a single warm up fixture against Papua New Guinea you wonder whether there may have been some lateral thinking involved. If we are going to continue to be trounced by the Kiwis we need to find some other near neighbour that we can reliably have bragging rights over. (To be fair to those strategising the campaign in France there was to be a second warm up fixture against Kiribati but too late it was discovered that no one on the Island actually played the game.)

If we are to continue to indulge in million-dollar CEOs and million-dollar coaches, then let's plan ahead. Nude calendars; chook raffles; lamington drives - I'd rule nothing out.

I'd have to vote for the calendar as the players could organise that themselves.

I doubt the ARU, NSWRU or SRU (especially) could organise a chook raffle or lamington drive or, if they did, the price would be so high that most people couldn't afford to buy a ticket / lamington.

Really? I had no idea. Interesting though. Mens Rugby in Canada would face tough competition from Ice Hockey I imagine so I guess they think they'll gain more of an inroad through the womens side of things. Edit: or do the men play Rugby in the summer cause it's too cold in winter?

Bruce Ross I don't know if the ARU would be capable of producing a high enough quality lamington for my liking & as the coach says it would also be ridiculously over priced.

Apologies for sidetracking this thread into a "Women in Rugby Union" rather than "Women's Rugby Union" but they are sort of linked.

Recently the Bulldogs Loig Club have announced that a Kiwi lady (born in Wagga) currently CEO of Netball NZ will be their next CEO.

This gets the Jarse grey matter going.

ARU have recently announced that Women's RU and Women's 7's are key target areas for growth.

The GM - Participation position is still vacant, but apparently Ensign Pulver is close to shortlisting the candidates for this position.

What better message would it be to send to the "market" that ARU was serious about Women's rugby and increasing women's participation numbers than having a female appointed to a key position on the ARU Executive?

What female sports administrators/businesswomen would be suitable for this position?

The ARU being "serious about Women's rugby"? There could be some innocents who might miss the subtlety in that little jest, Huge, but for those of us who've been around for a while even a line about the ARU being "serious about Men's rugby" might draw a chuckle.

As for suitable characteristics of "female sports administrators/businesswomen" who might wish to apply there are no set criteria, but the following would be looked on particularly favourably:
  • Attended a GPS school, particularly one situated north of the Harbour;
  • Is familiar with the Book of Common Prayer;
  • Plays golf off the back tees.
Having "a chap" who is "not really one of us" would be nearly as disastrous as having a front rower coaching the Wallabies as has reputedly been sagely observed though apparently not directly overheard.

I have someone in mind who's shown she can readily identify misogynists and put them in their place very smartly. She's had some experience managing a large organisation of people with varying agendas and has shown herself able to withstand backbiting and continuous challenges to her position from within the organisation so she should handle a position within the ARU with ease. I'll keep her name to myself for the time being but there's a strong chance she'll be available around mid September. Watch this space!

She's more interested in AFL and the Western Bulldogs.

Parramatta Women continued on their winning way, beating Warringah 36-10. Warringah are a good team and certainly placed the strong Parra team under massive pressure for the ten to fifteen minutes before halftime but the Two Blues team responded well after halftime to run out convincing winners. Both these teams are worth a look if you are in the area when they have a match scheduled. The draw can be found here.

Next round:
Round 9 - 22/06/2013

Home Team v Away Team Location Time
Warringah v Penrith Pittwater Rugby Park Front Field 2:00pm
Waverley v Parramatta Waverley Oval 2:15pm
Rockdale v Sydney University C A Redmond Field 2:00pm
