You could argue for the preferred kiwi option of 2 Aus teams with a pacific team, with the point of building a genuine NRC below that.
I think two variants have been floated there. One is where TT teams are 'selected' from a lower-level feeder NRC. That's a bad model, IMO.

The other way is for the top domestic teams (from a smaller, higher quality comp) qualify. Optionally, a challenge comp could also be added for the rest.

For everyone like me that wants a domestic option, you equally have someone determined that an international flavor must constantly be present.

My big concern though is those necessary short term options invariably just become long term problems.
I think going solely domestic is possible, but would be operating under more constrained financial limits for quite a long while.

I want both a local-controlled comp and wider horizons to pay for it.

I think the option of two would be NSW/QLD allowing you to protect your biggest markets and having two very competitive teams, you go 3 teams then it just becomes your quasi domestic league.
The caveat being with two teams can you build genuine content below that level, i'm just not sure you can.

I'm not sure what you mean "I want both a local-controlled comp and wider horizons to pay for it".

^ Can't wait. :)

Hoggy, the wider horizons means more than 2 Oz teams getting to play matches (some rather than none) against NZ teams. I want Kiwis in oz watching Aus games, and wanting our teams to lose........

Your 2 team model (tbf, I suspect it's not yours) will generate what, one prime time game per week?

Then the rest of rugby is getting close to being park footy.

Yes, I am very much in the domestic camp. He can be a right Tosser but A Jones article in the Australian today is not far off the mark in my opinion.

"I want Kiwis in OZ watching Aus games and wanting our teams to lose", I hear ya, but what exactly have we been doing then for the last 20 years.

Be interesting to hear the spin from NZRU this arvo, do we put our knee pads on and start asking for participation.

Not watching saffa teams.

See, indifference is the problem more than hate.

Not me.

But RA have to produce their plan and earn their paychecks.

My model is available for a modest fee, natch.

Nah just kidding.

NZ Rugby wants new professional comp from 2021 with 8-10 teams involved. Hope for five Kiwi teams, a Pasifika team and “working with Rugby Australia to seek expressions of interest from their current Super clubs and other interested parties to join the competition.”

And other interested parties is obviously Twiggy and maybe some mates.!!

The wording from their release was ordinary.

Expressions of interest????? Isn't this supposed to be an equal partnership. Basically saying you can join my club if I let you.

Happy for them to run the competition if they pay for all the marketing, negotiate the rights deal, provide salary cap dispensation and provide welfare for the players in it. But we all know that wouldn't be the case.

Either they let the country join and they have free rein to do what they want within their own decision making process or they accept clubs on their own basis but that also means they pay and control everything that comes through it.

Because at this stage the only one who has come up with a preferred comp? What is Australia's?
A TT comp which includes all 5 of our teams. we’ve made that quite clear. In NZs proposed format it’s simply an All Blacks development program.

The Herald understands NZR instead plan to keep the format of the hugely popular all-Kiwi Super Rugby Aotearoa intact, but will invite Rugby Australia to tender to be a part of the competition.

NZR would then decide how many, if any, Australian teams it deems viable of playing in the competition - based on factors including player numbers and welfare and financial strength

Its all reward and no risk for their stance. Only risk they have is if Australia completely walks away, that means everyone loses, which obviously isn't going to happen. They are asking Australia to tell another community they aren't allowed a seat at the table anymore and essentially kill off any high standard rugby in that region, potentially ever. That went so well last time for Aus rugby.

It would be less detrimental to just open the selection criteria between both countries and allow some form of free trade to improve the standard, than it would be for exclusion.

Where in that release does it say Australia can't have 5 teams?

Hey kiwi it much to easy to just say hey they bullying us! I wouldn't mind betting that if they saying EOI, it is to make sure teams can afford to be in it and Force can join, if anyone remember RA kicked them out so they not really a Aus super team I supposing. I stand by what I said, I think it will be 9-10 team comp with 4 from Aus and maybe a PI one, which won't happen next tear, they couldn't raise a competitive team in the next couple of years! I repeat what is Aussies preferred comp?

Yeah that does not sound like a partnership to me.
