Would u think Link would start Davies after his shenanigans on Sunday?

Best of the reds backs against the force IMO. Link would have to be insane to drop him just for giving Sheehan a little (well deserved) tickle around the chops.

What would be interesting is to see "Australia's Fastest Footballer" (Lachie Turner) up against IMO "The Real Fastest Footballer" in Rocket Rod Davies.

Looks like after watching the game on Sunday that Rod's found more speed over the off season.

Lee Grant

John Eales (66)
I doubt it. Davies looked just as fast last year and was faster than Turner then and now.

Nobody is fooled by Turner's "Australia's Fastest Footballer" tag, least of all Turner. He wouldn't even be the fastest guy in the Tahs.

But he is quick and a real pro. He won the meet and would have prepared for that sprint on TV with the diligence that he prepares himself for a rugby game. Since it was a 100 metres track sprint he would have trained for that on the track with spikes, and not 30 or 40 metres with footie boots on grass.

Had John Grant, from the "Junior Waratahs" team been able to have all the prep time and not been called in late, he probably would have won it.

If anybody has official recent sprint times for fast Oz rugby players I would appreciate knowing them. My opinions may be bunk.

It was always going to go a Union player, most of them have GPS backgrounds and as a result they all did athletics so had proper sprint training. Turner still holds a GPS record for hurdles I think.

I think most schools in the country offer athletics as a co-curricular activity.

Nobby private schools have "co-curricular activity". I would like to think that public schools still do "sport".
"sport" fair enough, but I always knew sport as being extra-curricular.

I've seen a similar discussion before and most agree that as far as rugby is concerned, speed over 40 meters is the real measure on a footy field. Davies looks to have that in the bag easily, but I would love to see other rugby players times. The Reds have a number of gasmen apart from Rocket, like Morahan, Toua and Shipperley, and there is a kid in the academy, Feldsman I think, who might be the quickest of all.

Be interesting to see who the various speedsters around the franchises are.

were debating private education and the fastest footballer in a tahs v reds thread, honestly?

turner can tackle, rod likes to think he can based on a scrappy game without much space, goodbye rod.

Tahs to definitely start as favorites on the basis of last week. Reds scrum will have to really improve, which is why I think Holmes to start and Horwill to lock should be considered.

The backs clash will be a cracker with some great match ups.

were debating private education ...

How ironic :).

Once again we're wanging on to outside backs, when the contest will be pretty much decided by the performance of 1-8 and 9/10 as combinations and as individuals. No disrespect to the jackhammer fists of Rod Davies and the sublime broken play kicking of Lachie Turner.

Mitchell Felsman.

I would say almost undoubtably he is the quickest. Over 40, 100 or 200 meters for that matter.

So if Simmons and Daly are in, then we can assume that Horwill is still at 6. I don't mind that at all, however in that case I'd like to see Leroy go for a faster back rower. Schatz or even Higginbotham.

Daly might have serious issues in the scrum, although in saying that I think most of the problem is actually Fa'ainga, not Daly.

I'm going to wang on some more about outside backs.

Toua looked very very quick while he was on. If anyone saw vision of him chasing down O'Connor for his try would have seen how quickly he closed the gap on him and almost caught him after coming all the way over from his wing.

Houston did not cover himself in glory. He appears to have a serious case of Meercat-itis in the scrums, including on the reds feed, and he was seen in a couple of collisions but had nowhere near the involvement needed.

The courier is reporting that Liam Gill is lining up tonight against Samoa, so he musn't figure in plans for Friday:

Up-and-comer Liam Gill and the Reds Second XV will back up for their second game in five days when they tackle Samoa at Ballymore tonight

I hope Fat Cat starts. The battle between him and Slipper is the one that has me most excited.

Regarding Number 8, I just want the best hands at the back of the scrum so I would go with Leroy. Shatz on the bench for later in the game. Taking the ball of the back will be a big part of the Reds game and I like the thought of Genia at first reciever at times, pushing Cooper a little wider. Although Tom Carter is a decent defender, I see oppurtunity there as I think he is to slow to handle Cooper's footwork.

Sorry but a don't see a demolition at scrum time on the cards. Parity will be the likely outcome and each side should have no trouble winning their own ball cleanly.

I see a real strategic battle here as in reality not much seperates these sides and this Saturday night, last weeks form won't mean jack.

Was anyone else as surprised by B.Robinson's physique as I was? The guy did not look like an athlete as all.

He played as well as anyone could ask from a reserve flanker but still, he looked out of place in a Super rugby game.

The Tahs should still be overwhelming favourites at scrum time, the reality is that it was the first time playing together last weekend for the Reds front row, the Tahs have a avantage in this area.

Sekope Kepu alone has the same number of Super Rugby caps as Slipper and Daley combined..
