Damn, that team looks exciting Noddy. There is so much skill in that backline and the forwards as usual look strong.

wj. does your 1 button not work?

and why Barnes to 13? what will he bring to the table out there?

nope that button does not work,
im working on a theory were the dual playmakers become I0 and I3 with a twelve between them capable of getting over the advantage line. You all call me crazy now, but after the kiwis do it for a few years and then the wallabies try in vain to copy them in time for 20I5, then, then you can quote it, its the way of the future.

with the breakdown working more towards attacking than last year, having a quick hit up at I2 followed by having a playmaker either side of the ruck would help break down defence more than the dual playmaker role currently which has turned into playmaker no#I to playmaker no#2 doing nothing but creating space in depth by sending the ball deeper, having a crash ball twelve will mean getting the defence on the backfoot which would allow the playmakers to pick runners and forwards either side than the crabbing its turned into from most australian teams from one side to the next.

I guess Conrad Smith plays a similar type of role with Nonu inside him. Takes the right type of player to play that role though and dont think Barnes has ther pace or strength to be a 13. Mind you neither does Carter

very interested to see what happens now.

Exactly - it may not work but at least it is change.

Last year he waited too long to make change and when he did for the last 3 games it worked, especially against the Sharks.

But the 9, 10 and 12 are the same as they were against the Force. Whether the forwards get the go forward to facilitate the work of the backs, or not, I hope the backline have been practising clearing the ball quickly and passing in front of running players and dare I say it: catching the ball.

Dunno if young Kurtley at the Super level is a fullback, but I want to see if I am right or wrong - and so do a lot of folks I expect.

I love the look of that team. Very impressive. And again, an excellent bench (whether or not it gets used is another question).

Dave Dennis has been the surprise package for me. Really like the look of him. A bit of a work horse too.

I've been putting together some stats, however much they can be frowned upon, and among the Wallaby 6 contenders (Higgers, Rocky, Mumm and Mowen [well he used to be a contender]) DD seems the best defensively.

He has made more tackles then the rest (in only 4 games) with 53 and apparently only missed one.

Which is why he's starting and Mowen is on the bench. Mowen brings better running skills (not in evidence last week though) and attacking the other teams lineout (because Mumm won't) and is therefore a better team choice overall. But if you want someone to pull down Jerome Kaino every time then I guess its a good but conservative choice.

The only change I would make, as posted earlier, is to swap Kurtley and Berrick. Anyhow, lets see how it goes.

Me too, I'm taking to him after saying that he was just a good ball runner at the club level and was a hard worker, but not much else.

Some people want precedence for Mowen, but whilst he is better in the lineout and a better stepper, Dennis has looked to me like a harder player and more interested in making a difference at the coal face. He can use the ball better too IMO.

As for stats available to the general public: I don't frown on them per se, but they are just one clue to making assessments of a player.

In amateur boxing the most important thing in judging the performances of the two boxers is the total number of punches landed.

It's different in pro boxing. The judges make a subjective opinion about fight management, whether the punch is clean or not, and regardless of that or the number thrown, the effect of punching in the round. They also give a premium for good defence.

The pro way is better though, not to the point, it is better for amateur boxing that they do what they do.

Many of the rugby stats are like objective amateur boxing stats. Give me a bit of subjectivity.

Yep, what Lee said.

From what I have seen Mowen cannot pass, break tackles or be a physical presence. Dennis has shown all of these attributes and for me is a much better selection than Mowen. I do admit than Mowen can chip and chase and bomb trys but these are not things I look for in a No. 6.

This is the week for conservative use of the bench! That starting line up looks exciting. Mowen is the only one I would be looking to get on early, probably for Kane Douglas who might run out of steam in fast game like this one promises to be. Dennis into the 2nd row at that time. Holmes if Burgess not working, Fitzy if TPN pops a gasket, Kepu for 20 to give Baxter a rest after his injury, Caldwell for 15 to do what he did last week. Carter and Anesi for injuries only.

Apparently Luke McAlister is making his come-back from a poor string on injuries this weekend. Unlucky for the Tahs cos i rate McAlister as one of the best inside centres around. Although he will most likely be starting from the bench.

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-union/u...ster-likely-for-bench-role-20100324-qurp.html

The centre pairing of McAlister and Ranger scares the hell out of me. If McAlister is on form, n Ranger keeps playing the way he is, its got the be the centre pairing of the super 14. Watch out Tahs!

As per WJs request.

1. Burgess delivers quick, clean ball from the rick and aimed at the receivers breadbasket. He does not fuck about for 30 seconds so that the Blues can get their defence organised and then throw a pass that has to be collected above the head or off the ground.
2. The fullback actually attacks and has the ability to a) beat his man b) offload to whoever is off his shoulder or c) put in a skillful tactical kick that puts real pressure on the Blues.
3. Benn Robinson keeps his bind up at scrum time. He's been a bit of a naughty boy with that recently
4. There are less than 5 mid-field bombs from the Tahs
5. We have some back line moves that are a tad more effective than a one-off pass or the inside ball.
6. The backline moves requested in 5. are executed properly and timed to perfection.
7. The defensive line holds its shape and continues the generally good job its been doing.

My dinner's on the table so that will do for now.

I disagree! He's trying some-thing cos Anesi wasnt doing much. I hardly notice Anesi is even playing. Beale has potential at fullback! screw defending, waratahs are in need of good attack!

(if it was me tho, id stick mitchell at fullback, Anesi on the wing since he has speed to burn.)

I agree. I think he's been largely anonymous, and when i have seen him with the ball he seems to canter into waiting defence.

Better than putting a non tackler at 12 or 13. Don't you remember players such as Merhtens being hidden from front line defense by playing fullback when the opposition has the ball?

I think Beale will go well at fullback. He has the skills and is actually pretty quick.

Was going to pick the Blues but this team might just get them over the line - if the tactics are ok....

Oh and Beale is most definitely a fullback - no question. The space will suit him and I expect to see him play his best game of the season this weekend (not a high bar to clear...)

With that many changes, putting Holmes in to start might have been unwise. However his injection has provided some urgency to the Tahs when he comes on so at least 30 minutes thanks Hickey.

The big question is how Rene Ranger is up against two pretty handy (though slender) blokes on defence: Barnes inside shoulder, Horne outside shoulder...
