I got an email from my club president at Waverley Rugby that he was approached by the Waratahs to "organise" a supporter group (similar to the Rebel Army) to add a bit more flavour to the home Games. Read the email below, and if interested please email me at laurenperry_84@hotmail.com with numbers by 12PM Thursday.
I have been approached to put together a "Waratahs Supporters Club" to add a little noise at atmosphere to the Waratah's home games. So I have spread the net far and wide to people who would be likely to bring some noise to matches, and make the games a lot of fun:
The Perks:
- Entry to sit with your fellow Supporters Club members at Waratah Home games
- an invitation to be as loud as you want to be
- an opportunity to sing a few songs and generally have a good time
- a chance to look fantastic in Sky Blue with a bunch of other people.
I am looking to get 20-30 like minded people together for the match this weekend versus the Force (21/05/2011, SFS) and if it goes well, then there'd be a focus on continuing the good deeds for the other remaining home matches:
Saturday 21st May v Lions. SFS
Saturday 11th June v Highlanders. SFS
Saturday 18th June v Brumbies. ANZ Stadium
So let me know whether you are keen. This isn’t an opportunity to create something similar to the Boxing Roos (Wallabies and Olympics Supporters group) to add a bit of vocal support for our Tahs. Down the track we'd look to ways of getting the group to away games to support the Tahs on the Road, whether it be around Oz against the Mexicans, Cane toads, Parliamentarians or those weird folk on the other side of the country, across the ditch or an occasional trip to the Republic.
If you are keen, and/or know others that are keen send me through your name and the names of anyone else I have missed on this general send out. We can then work out a meeting point for this Saturday's match.

If the Waratahs hadn't treated their fans so poorly over the last few years with ordinary rugby, bad food and expensive beer, people would pay good money (admission fees) to do the above.

wow, apparently Waratah Jesus has organised "a supporter group" as well.

Fantastic initiative. Well, initiative would seem to indicate something unique. But good work regardless. I miss the former large and vocal Tah crowds.

If anyone is keen please email me (as above) as I need numbers by 12pm

One would hope that there is no discrimination in regards to membership of his group. I wouldn't like to think that non-drinkers would be automatically excluded.

I don't think they would be excluded Bruce. They would just be belittled by all other members until they started to drink.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so on behalf of the Rebel Army, thanks guys :D

I've never heard of the Boxing Roos though.

Due to overwhelming response the allocation has been closed

For God's sake, don't let it end here. So what if the Tahs can only spring for 20 tickets, tell people where you're going to be and get them to pay for it.

People will take free tickets for anything, and whether they enjoy it or not, may not return. Paying customers who you give a good experience to, on the other hand, come back.

We will be northern stand (possibly the old tah patrol digs) near the carlton draught bar, look out for the singing drunks.

Meet us at the forrester hotel in surry hills at approx 6:30pm for song rehersals etc even if you're not sitting near us JUST COME OVER

No discrimination on anyone the more support the merrier!

Did anyone else think this would be about a support group set up? "my name is simon, and I've been a waratahs fan for 13 years now. At first it was just somewhere to go on a Saturday that served beer. Then I got some merchandise. Then one day you find you need to freebase phil Waugh blood just to get to normal"

I had a chat with the guy who's organising this, what the Waratahs want is this to be to the diehard fans, not blow ins.

What this weekend is, is a test, if it works it stays. However, what a lot of people are saying in this method is, is that why wasn't it done before? It was attempted. It failed due to poor organisation, hence why my club president was asked to do it.

Yes the Waratahs have lost games, and will lose games in the future.

What the club wants is diehard fans who stick around during thick and thin, and want to get these seats.

diehard fans, you support qld?

i was in the old group, it died cos the waratahs pulled the tickets, we were getting 80 people there a game and making a fair bit of noise, but whatever, im sure you guys will sound good from the back of the bay, as the front is were our permanant tickets are.

Jeez, they're only giving you a week? That's slightly concerning. How do they expect to find 'diehard fans who stick around during thick and thin' if they're so impatient with a timeline?

This is the inherent problem with a club-run supporter group. You're at their mercy of their whim. They might have seen the Rebels match and gone 'ooh I want that', only for, let's say, the Force to give out cake at a home game, and all of a sudden it's not about the supporter groups, it's all about the cake.

Note to self: Email Rebels re. cake idea.

The best thing about the Rebel Army is that we run our own show. We work with the union, not for it. We might not be their priority some times, but we're always our own priority.

I honestly hope this works for you guys. From the bottom of my heart, I do, because this is something painfully absent from Union in Australia. But, until the Waratah fans mobilise, and take responsibility for their own atmosphere, I'll always have my doubts.

diehard fans, you support qld?

Wow I just noticed that. I'm confused now.
