Waratahs 2022

100% Good luck to him but geez they are carrying on, also if he REALLY wanted to stay he would have done so and fought for a spot. Honestly, we can't keep everyone here and we have had plenty of players come our way.
Setting aside for a moment the “why are we talking about Mack Hansen in the Tahs thread” question. I think it’s a valid concern for Brumbies fans to be asking why he didn’t get more of an opportunity. The coaches are supposed to be the experts and they kept him behind a long list of people for a few years. Does anyone think Banks, Muirhead or Wright would be walk up starters for Ireland? I’m not so sure.

Fair enough that fans weren’t calling him the second coming. It’s not like we’ve seen much of him. It’s not the same as Nick Dolly who was a anonymous junior years ago. He went from fringe squad player to starting international after a few games.

Idiot. If aussie rugby has that outlook we don’t go anywhere
Easy tiger.
By we, I’m talking Waratahs (this is a Waratahs thread). apparently it was our fault he left the brumbies, went to Europe and got a cap with Ireland because we didn’t sign him after Maddocks left. That was my only point. Why is he being mentioned as a lost talent on this thread? I don’t think he had any involvement with the Waratahs. Is it a loss to rugby here? Probably. Like you I’d prefer every eligible player stay here and push the overall standard so the Wobs would be stronger. And like you, I’d prefer not to be called an idiot.

Apologies just shits me that super franchises are so stupid in their selections because someone falls outside their zone. Yet tahs happy to sign welsh and kiwis etc.

If he were a centre or lock we may have been more interested. The Tahs have 3 quality up and coming 5/8s that have been in their system for a few years, two can play fb, there are other fb candidates also. They’re all young, I’d assume they have a few years on their contracts. Why would the Tahs, who were pleading poverty last year, fork out $ in a position that could be covered in house?

Because they had a 5 million surplus and he is better than any back we have.

I’ll go back to my original statement, we didn’t let him go. The Brumbies did. Then they filled his spot with Cam Clarke, who the Tahs had let go. Maybe he didn’t want to play in Sydney? maybe he wanted to live OS? Who knows? Whether he’s better than the players here or not is debatable (I’ve barely seen him play TBH). But it’s a lot of space on a Waratahs thread over someone we didn’t sign.

Like if we were talking Kellaway, who signed early with the Tahs, went down the pecking order, contract wasn’t renewed, became somewhat of a journeyman, came back, signed with the rebels, gets called up for a wallabies squad from left field and absolutely slays it it in the wallabies jersey, THAT would be on us.

Pass it to Dunning!

Fair. But at the time, it seemed sensible to let Kellaway look elsewhere. And even then, it took him a long time to come good.

remind me again how the Tahs and not the Brumbies are at fault for Hansen playing in Ireland?
always the Tah's fault... Lets put it to bed though, he was either going to play in Canberra or in Ireland dont think any other team in oz had a chance..

Maybe not, but they were all in better form than Hansen last Super Rugby season. And Banks and Muirhead were already contracted until the end of 2022. Wright was the only one of those three whose contract ran out last year and I don't think many would have picked Hansen before Wright (the Wallaby winger at the time).

I would have liked Hansen to stay but you can't keep them all.

Good article on Coleman learning from LA experience importance of experience and mentors (la context was giteua, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) and Dennis) why Roberts important / valuable for Tahs. I think the force more then proved that. Like to see more of this adopted by other super rugby clubs but then again brumbies in some ways done this with mogg and CFS.

You seem to be making the assumption that Hansen would have preferenced going to any other Super Rugby side than heading over to play in Ireland. Given what happened that seems pretty unlikely.

Connacht with their Australian coach, Andy Friend offered him a two year deal. Who knows what the money on offer was but Hansen is Ireland qualified and was clearly being actively recruited.

Unless taking up that contract seemed like a horrible idea, why would Hansen shop around for a low value contract at another Australian Super rugby side?

You know you are losing touch when you don't even know who Hansen is.
