I'm not carrying on under any assumption that any Australian playing in Europe will come back. Much more money, a better lifestyle and less politics. I'm a little mystified that any Australian who gets a good contract offer in Europe doesn't jump at it.
More money, sure. Probably a more professional environment with access to better coaching and facilities.

Less politics and a better lifestyle? Certainly not if they are playing in Britain/Ireland.

More professional environment is only true for some clubs. Plenty of French clubs are a downgrade, France has lifestyle and money going for it

You could easily infer that Robertson asked for more money and didn't get it Over East.

Or simply he kept asking what will he be paid and nobody could tell him. So,sick of not knowing he decided to take the offer on the table as opposed to the one that wasn’t. That would also explain the frustration with the off field and the relief of being at the Force.

That would be a massive failure on the part of his own management.

I opt for the theory that NSWRU has been in slash n burn mode and player salaries were at the forefront.

Possibly right Pfitzy and I have no more info than is generally known.

But on the other hand, with all these guys, they have been asked to take a hair cut, haven't they? Perhaps the issue is, a mohawk is fine, but "no" to the Uncle Fester routine.

And I'm still paying $1k per grade to the national "participation fee" this year. Hopefully that rights the ship ;)

Per player? Sorry, per grade for a club?

Dont disagree on the dichotomy nor poor PR of rugby admin.

Sydney Subbies clubs worked out a deal where each grade pays a flat $1K instead of collecting per player.

This is in part because we don't use the Rugby Xplorer platform, and because every club is Senior Grades, usually (not always) distinct entities from the Junior club.

We also pay our insurance direct to AON rather than collecting per-player through Rugby Xplorer - this is a bit of a punish as it has gone up to $2400ish this year.

Add on the $550 registration fee per grade with Subbies, and you're talking a bit short of $4K per grade. So if you only get 25 players registered per grade, you're talking $158 to break even ($40 RA, $96 insurance, $22 Subbies). Add on your shorts and socks and you're at $200.

If you're registering 120 blokes at a 3-grade club - and they all pay ;) - then you're far better off.

Well, not really. His management got him a new gig. It was a failure of NSWRU which dicked around the players by cutting the budget, forcing them into a long and painful process of trying to find out who they could afford. My guess is Robertson didn’t want to wait around to see if he made the cut.

Thanks for missing my point.

Obviously a lot of people would struggle to justify $200 to play rugby, but for me I always thought it was good value for money considering how much time it takes up. That gets my fiancé about 5 pilates classes.

Sure beats a gym membership, anyway. Edit: if only my tendons wern't shot to shit.

Our club is $150 this year, and we are at the low end.

I've seen a few clubs north of $300 despite selling absolutely every square inch of jersey/shorts space to sponsors.

When talking to them, we're staggered by the sponsorship dollars they get, but they're similarly amazed at our ability to generate raffle income on a Friday night at The Ettamogah ;)

One of the guys who plays grid iron said they paid over $400 for that. o_O

Oh wow. I thought they were all doing it for free and sleeping under the demountables at Daceyville.

If your employer cut your wages for months and then offered your next contact at a reduced amount, you may look for other options as well

its still very good value, Soccer in some areas is upwards of $600 to play, even competing in social basketball incurs a $200 odd fee to the governing body as a yearly membership before you even pay the people who run the comp

Of course.

But if I was working in what is effectively a gig economy, I'd also understand that these risks are not uncommon when the parameters have been significantly damaged in a global downturn.

One thing that keeps the price down in rugby is that not much funding goes to referee match payments. The referees are largely volunteers.

Agreed. Was talking to the local soccer club a couple of years back. Even with a ~$300 registration, most of that flows upward to places like state/national bodies and refereeing payments.

After paying for player kit, the club was left with about $50 for the rest of it i.e. physio, capital purchases, etc.
