He's not "bad" at all, but you can't say he's world class at all. I think Genia is an amazing player and I don't think he's done enough for long enough to be considered World Class either. Sure, he's put in some world class performances and I think he'll get there one day, but it's jumping the gun to call him that now. Burgess, however, is the type of player you have between greats. They'll make the national squad but they won't immortalise themselves.

sorry to hit you with my broad brush noddy, perhaps you can put your paint roller back in its tray and call the kettle dark grey?

i was answering the question put to me that if i could have the reds backline and tahs forwards i would jump at it, iaone was the only one i would consider, but being a fan i wouldnt give up the current waratahs backline for anyone other than genia and quade as i mentioned above.

In a combined team of Tahs and Reds on current form, I would have:

Robinson, TPN, Baxter
Mumm, Humphries
Braid, Higginb or Mowen, Palu

Genia, Cooper
Fa'ainga, Horne (Chambers still a lot to prove)
Mitchell, Ioane
Hynes

I have never been able to get the meaning of "world class". I have asked many people who have used the expression to define it and been given a different definition every time. Care to add one more?

My take would be " would be considered for selection in a World XV (plus bench) of the day".

Good point, it's as subjective as "good" really. I'd define it as someone who consistently performs above the average on the world front and who's mere presence or lack thereof is one of the most important parts of the game. Think the All Blacks with/without Dan Carter, the Bok's without FDP or Matfield or the Aus of old without Larkham etc. Sure, there are very capable backups but they are a cut above.

I think "world class" is a silly expression. I don't use it. Perhaps a suitable definition might be "able to compete reasonably with the best in the world in a fair contest". For example, if the Reds played the Bulls and their forwards weren't smacked, Genia v Du Preez would be a fair contest.

I do use "great" which I define as significantly better than the average of a generation.

agree with you biffo, i was only using world class as a, he isnt out of place in a test match which is country against country and therefore the world as the world is made up of countries.

Back to the subject (well, one of the subjects) Burgess is certainly good enough to do well against any international team if his forwards get parity.

You're obviously asking the wrong people. Check those forelock tuggers/cultural cringers over on SBS; they're always rabbiting on about "world class" this or that.

This thread is getting so deep :lmao:

The term "World Class" is definitely over used, especially by commentators. I sometimes think it is referring to a player who is capable to play - or would be welcome - in any countries test team.

Good news on Big Cliff. I would say World Class implies you could make a World squad of 20 - 30 players. So top 2 or 3 in your position.

Top 10 scrum halves in order of ablity:

1. FdP
2. Genia
3. Cowan
4. Parra
5. Cusiter
6. Blair
7. O'Leary

8. Weepu
9. Januarie
10. Reddan?
