Yeah fuck me. There's 2 test matches in Brisbane this year. $55 is pretty fucking reasonable for an event of that nature.

A decent night out on the sauce will cost $200-$300. Plenty of the people that said it was too expensive would likely spend that.

I think it comes down to what people perceive as being worth their dollar. For the last couple of years, the spectacles we'd paid good money for have been nothing but a bore. One try, penalty kickathons with the players not entertaining the public.

Outside of Joubert being such a worry rat about making a call and getting the tmo to spend 5 minutes reviewing possible tries, last night was one of the most entertaining games we've watched in a good few years. The French had some "razzle dazzle" moments and the wallabies scored a years worth of tries under the previous managements tenure.

If you had asked people last night whether they got their money's worth I'm wiling to bet everyone would have said yes. After last years draw against the darkness, I'm sure people would have said no.

The hypothetical is, if tickets were $40 would they have increased attendance by a further 10'000, or is the 33'000 a reflection of genuine interest in watching the Wallabies play the French.. The answer is probably somewhere halfway.

Watching the Wallabies play a friendly against France isn't a premium event... The crowd size is a reflection of the interest in the event, the price of tickets merely exasperated the problem..

Whinging about people been unwilling to pay $55 because there is only 2 games in Brisbane this year isn't going to solve anything, the crowd attendance speaks volumes.

As a student, I can't afford that. So you know what I did?
I went 1/2'sies in a carton with my brother and got shitfaced yelling at the TV from the comfort of my lounge room.

Cost: $17.50

Should have bought $17.50 worth of rum, poured it into a flask, put it in your shoes, pants or coat and bought cokes like the rest of us did as students. Problem solved, you'll have half a bottle of rum in your belly ready to hurl abuse at Joubert wasting our time with the tmo!

The attendance is a concern. But surely the concern is why there was so little interest in the code's main product that has a limited supply than the ticket prices, which compared to other entertainment was good value.

Not at all. There are many reasons why there were empty seats.

The notion that cheaper tickets = bigger crowds is extremely flawed. Otherwise we would have $15 and packed houses every week for every game.
.

Lack of interest in the Wallabies playing the French is the main reason...

The $15 analogy isn't really applicable as we all know the costs of the ticket is needed to cover the costs of renting the stadium.. I fail to believe that $55 is the figure required for cover the expenses given other sporting events have ticket pieces in the $30 range..

The ARU is obviously charging a premium on the tickets, which they are entitled to do but the premium charged needs to find an equilibrium between consumer demand and stadium expenses, and right now they are around 10'000 punters off.

all because of Paddy Ryan who we all know isn't a test standard prop. Give the guy a chance Sio will get his chanc but Cowan has been in great form.

Not only did he have Ryan he also has TPN who had just played a full 80 not sure he has done that all year aswell as a lock who we now know was on 1 leg.

I just watched the last scrum again a couple of times - Carter was packing at TH lock. He didn't get anywhere near low enough on Ryan's arse (which is a joke as Paddy was packing high) and Carter pops under the force of the shove.

So that scrum (and resulting penalty try) wasn't entirely Paddy's fault, in fact. Anyone who wants to argue can go watch the replay to prove themselves wrong.

I would have put Horwill at TH lock TBH.

Paddy was definitely in the wrong when he over extended in an earlier scrum. But he was NOT guilty of "hit-and-chase" in the other scrum for which we were short armed.

Scrum failure, not player failure. Key difference.

Which isn't to say his presence doesn't concern me, but it does head off some of the bullshit from the scrum "experts" around here.

The bigger issue was that our ruck cohesion went to shit with the replacement forwards on.

Perhaps a friendly wouldn't be. But the first of a rare three test series isn't a "friendly" by any measure. A friendly is what the socceroos played against the South Africans at ANZ in front of 50k in a dull ass 1-1 draw.

I actually don't have any issues with Hooper being made captain and I suspect he will be, I am just making a case for the other candidate. The fact that he is on the wing is largely irrelevant in this day and age with the leadership group.

If Hooper is captain then another forward needs to be selected as VC. Fardy is the obvious one but he probably wouldn't pick another back rower, so from the tight 5 the options are Slipper or Simmons, neither are great choices.

So, being a bit of a visionary here, I'd make AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) captain, I think he has the respect of the whole team, and Hooper and To'omua VCs. Add Moore in once he is fit again and that leadership group can carry us through to the RWC in 2015. My opinion only.

Unlike your choice, Slipper has been both captain and vice-captain of his province.

AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) just doesn't strike me as being a leader. There's more to being a captain than what you are implying.

Hooper all the way for me. If you want a vc from the forwards, then Slipper would be my choice, not too many other options.

Apples and oranges, it's a World Cup year for the Soceroos and that game was the last opportunity for fans to watch the 'world cup' team play...

Attendance figures: I remember watching the Wallabies against Wales at Homebush years ago, because the contract was ALL Sydney Tests to be played at Homebush.

40,000 turned up, it was freezing, and dreary as fuck.

Thank fuck that contract is no longer in place.

33k isn't bad. You'd like more but the style of play last night will help that number grow again

Agree Pfity. Think the win will be a stimulus for future crowds. Let's hope the on field momentum continues and the Melbourne and Sydney crowds turn out in droves.

It's 5 in a row for the wallabies and if they can finish up this series it will be 7 leading into the Rugby championship. Something for the ARU to promote.

After some good insights and posts on this important subject, re the emboldened text above, surely now we are entering the realms of implausibility ;).

There's always the alternative of a great (first class) 'little' stadium one hour twenty mins by train south of Bris Vegas. It's called "Cbus Super Stadium", it's at Robina on the beautiful Gold Coast, it holds 27,400 screaming fans, and its playing surface is superior to that at Suncorp Stadium!

Let's lobby the IRB to pay for Folau's next contract for the sake of rugby. They can do also pay for Hayne and Inglis while they're at it.

I think people have a pretty unrealistic understanding of the economy of an event like a rugby test. We remember prices from 10 years ago and think they should be the same, but the reality is that costs have been rising consistently in Australia over the last ten years. Just in the last 3 years, average weekly earnings have risen by $200 to around $1,500. Consumer confidence might be down somewhat, but income have risen steadily and the costs of staging a rugby match with them.

To expect the ARU to run any of its limited set of earnings opportunities as loss leaders isn't realistic. They need to maximize earnings at each stage and hope that the Wallabies play exciting, energizing rugby that encourages fans to turn up. If they'd slashed ticket prices to fill Suncorp and the Wallabies had been poor, the ARU would be doubly screwed.

It costs $20 to go to a movie and $75 (and up and up) to go to see a Sydney Theatre Company production. $55 for an international rugby test does not seem wildly expensive to me -- and I say this as a casual academic who makes well under the average weekly income.

I accept that. It's paying $160+ per exceedingly ordinary seat in addition to over-priced and under-strength beer at a Bledisloe at Homebush that shits me.

Yes we need another overrated league recruit after Tahu. He can play for the Reds :p

Yeah what the fuck is up with that? Apparently its a beautiful climate, no shortage of water around, and relatively modern.

Still suffering from floods?
Amount of shade on the pitch?
Grass type not suitable for sustained footy?

Didn't the Wallabies beat France in Paris 59-16 whilst Deans was coach? I know it's a popular thing to bag Deans, but sometimes it's a bit silly. as though the team didn't underperform under every other coach before him after MacQueen..

I was only saying we are scoring far more tries now. We scored more tries on the spring tour, than the preceeding 12 month season.
Deans has achieved far more than me so i will not bag him, but gee the game plan he brought to the park didn't bring tries.

We are undoubtably now playing a far more attractive brand of Rugby under McKenzie then we ever did under Deans .. FACT

Any time someone starts or ends a sentence with "FACT" you know they're talking out of their arse...

I like what McKenzie is doing, but the reality is we've just not seen enough of the Wallabies under him to make much of a judgement. The Wallabies got smashed all through the RC last year under McKenzie, scoring fuck all tries in the process, and whilst they played great games against Ireland and Wales, we were pretty average against England and Scotland in the EOYT too.

It's great that we pumped France, but it doesn't tell us any more about how well the Wallabies will do under Link than the similar 7 try 59-16 romp the Deans Wallabies pulled off against them in their own backyard and with a full roster under back in 2010.

So lets just wait and see how we go and stop pretending that the Wallabies woes of the past 12 years have all been Deans' fault.
