Only changes I would make: Gordon in for Powell, have to find room for Higgers (pathetic that he is overlooked when we have such a dearth of fit backrowers) in for one of Banks/DHP/Naivalu, or else move the goalposts and pick Fardy.

At least he hasn't reached on Cottrell/Scott-Young/Colby/Wells who aren't up this level (ASY (Angus Scott-Young) might still get there).

Wonder if a fit RHP would have been a bolter?

Cheik loves to overstock outside backs in squads, it's bizarre.

On standby:
Faulkner/Ainsley
Rangi
Philip/Enever/Douglas/Carter
Timani
Gordon
Lance/Stewart
Speight/Naiyaravoro/Perese
Meakes/Foketi/English

There's some good depth there.

Blows my mind. One backrower on standby?? That’s a lot of second rowers and wingers on top of what we already have

Depends how Tui goes in the first test. I reckon Hanigan has played much better than year than people are giving him credit for.

I thought Naivalu was lucky, but he does have jet shoes

I thought it was a little bit of a waste of a player as I don't think it's likely he'll get on unless we rotate wingers and we could have done with another backrower. Perhaps the selection is in the same vein as the Milner-Skudder selection for the AB squad acknowledging that he was one of our best before the injury in the Italy test last year and trusting he can regain that form.

I'd certainly have him over Timani. He must be confident of getting Samu otherwise it really is pretty weird how short he is on backrow options.

He said he hoped to have it sorted today, but he'd obviously try all avenues first rather than half name someone else. No doubt he has a 6th backrower in his head if NZ decide to be fuckwits.

They always have a 33 man squad so 10 will miss out, it's so they can (a) train against another full team, and (b) have someone already in the squad if one of the preferred 23 goes amiss.

I understand that but we have 7 wingers (counting Rona who played on the wing for the Wallabies last year) in the squad. I would have preferred to see cover for 6 with Cottrel included over Naivalu but I'm sure the guys getting paid these selections know more than me.

Most logical explanation and reeks of double standards after Shields

Actually southsider it reeks of a Union that crosses the t' etc etc, what do you imagine happens if Samu gets injured playing for Wallabies re his contract with Crusaders? That was apparently main hold up with Shields too, they wanted to make sure he was covered!

Whoops just read WOBs reply which pretty much covers it!

I am hoping we will pick wingers who can catch the ball (and units who will get back and provide support), we will be box kicked to death by the best in the business.

OK Rona is in as a centre though I think. I think Naivalu is in as the only straight cover for Koribete as the specialist speedster, all the others cover fullback as well in the dual fullback/wing role, so there are 4 of those - Folau, DHP, Banks, Maddocks. Hodge is the odd one out but is probably in as the utility cover from the bench, he looks good for the 22 jersey. And there's one loosie yet to be named.

Fair enough to include Naivalu then as backup speed/power winger if there's a loose forward yet to be named and he's not taking up a spot in place of an extra backrower.

Hodge is the sore thumb. No one position he's particularly great in and is way out of form. He will probably get the 22 jersey but i don't think he deserves it.

He’s got the best boot in the squad for both goal kicking and touch finding.
