Wallabies 2025

The Ghost of Raelene

I mean yeah... if he is the only option then Les would be better. But surely not?
I think Les is doing a great job where he is and if he happened to grab a trophy or a top 2 spot with the Reds it would solidify his position as the front runner.

I just dreasd the innevideble trudge of names like Gatland, Joseph and of course Cheika always has his name involved as it grabs a Rugby and even non Rugby fans eye.

Come on down Andy Farrell. He wouldn't, but hell, throw a line out and buy him a box to as much NRL as his heart desires.

It would classic RA, if they haven't already got a replacement lined up. - JS's contract was for 2 years so its their duty of diligence to have someone ready to go. And....if it is to be Kiss or Bernie a replacement for them too

Would it really…

it’s not like there are a dozen highly credentialed test coaches just sitting around waiting to be offered jobs, or waiting for the potential that the existing preferred head coach of a test nation may leave.

I’d expect they would have discussed contingency planning based on who is available within the current RA structure, but it’s near impossible to line someone up given there are no assurances on the table.

We do seem to have fallen out of sync with the standard coaching rotation. Another wonderful achievement of McLennan's.

There certainly isn’t a bunch of highly credentialed sport administrators at At Moore Park either.

Genuine question though how do you lineup the next coach given the preference is to retain Schmidt and that these other suitably credential coaches that RA would like to sign are currently employed elsewhere.

Reality is Australia doesn’t have a coaching development pathway so when it comes time for a new Test coach, we’re at the mercy of marketing forces globally.. IMO

Come on Mick. Australian Rugby doesn’t need Sports administrators. They have ex bankers, ex Wallabies and ex Shore Old Boys! That’s why we are all over it! It’s so pitiful it’s actually hilarious.

Same like any big corporation does - look at NAB, ANZ, Virgin, Telstra - they all had a succession plan. In sports, look at the Reds more recently, they knew Thorn was off, Kiss (among others) were lined up.

Re, coaching dev pathways - so very true.

The flip side of the argument is that if you pluck one of the Super coaches - that franchise is F^&*ed.

Spare a thought for poor old Dan McK - he only had to hang on for a few more months and he could've been a shout for the Wallabies gig!

But what wonderful corporate jargon they can use - my fave "right sizing the business" i.e. sacking people

Comparing RA to major Banks and Telcos is hilarious.

But they don’t know Schmidt is off, in fact they’re hoping he isn’t. I guess that’s my point

Kiss was only recruited after Thorn announced he was stepping back and Reds invited applicants. Same as Virgin, ANZ who recruited externally.

No, haven’t said that, but still don’t quite understand how you line-up the next coach given the preference is to retain Schmidt and that these other suitably credential test coaches are currently employed elsewhere..

how do you secure a coach when you can’t even offer them the job as they’re not the 1st preference.

Kiss was announced three months after Thorn announced he was leaving. In July, when most coaches are going to be working out their next moves
Yes this is the most realistic solution, hence Schmidt needs to inform his intentions sooner than later. Coaches available today may not be available in 3 months time, and vice versa.
