Under-20 Competitions including Oceania & World U20s

Cockatoo Run

Commanding performance by the Tahs 20s in winning 40-12. In all honesty they left a lot of points out there against a disappointing Brumbies team who outsmarted them in the u19s only 5 months ago.

Brumbies had the better at scrum time but that was all. The Tahs second row of Mangelsdorf and Doyle had a field day and manhandled the Brumbies forwards, and this time the halves pairing of Sharples and Fowler were a class above in game management, getting field position and points. Bailey Park at hooker and Liam Grover in 13 were also good.

Of the younger brigade coming up from last years u18s the pick were Cleverly at 6, Fenwick at 12, and Watters in 14 who were all very good and will push for higher honours.

Tahs bench was strong with LeMaitre, Cesare, Blank and the younger Fowler all doing well.

For the Brumbies they were best served by Brndusic at prop, Ata at hooker, and Morrison at 8. Wings Tuquiri and Pilot were solid as well.

NSW to play Force. Few changes which is good for the boys. I expect a bit of a score to be put on them.

Force picked up Alatini from the Brums! Good on them. Brumbies letting De Luttiis and Alatini go within 12 months… what’s going on ACT.
I just think Tevita has been loaned to the Force for these 3 games.

Guess similar happened last year when Dillon was originally named in the Tahs but let go to the Brums and has since stayed.

Good for guys to get more time.

Pretty good effort I reckon Whisperer. From NSW maybe Liam Grover in the mix for outside backs and Mangelsdorf in the 2nd row. Goddard has done his ACL sadly. From the Brumbies Lipina Ata, Finn Baxter and Beau Morrison in the forwards can't be far off. Haven't seen the Reds or Force yet but hopefully there are a couple of 200cm+bohemeths out there!

Fakafunua will feature but is also a useful utility who can play 10,12,15. It’s 2 years ago but he got the better of Pakeho in the NSW v QLD games back in the 18s. I also get that his performances can be benefited by being on the dominate side.

Dre and Frankie’s senior footy experience makes them must picks at these tournaments.

If there’s some big Locks I’d move Doyle to 6 or 8. Guys like Brial are good chances but also eligible next year again.

We won’t see any high schoolers. It’s to big a jump when you see the lineups from England and France.

Great to see two Vic boys, and another TWO Harlequins juniors in the team - Dante Siale and Wyatt Ballenger.

Wyatt played in NSW last year, but was always a terror in schoolboys when I saw him play. Dante finished school in 2024 and moved up to the Pirates with a few other Quins boys. SOLID scrummer, good in broken play, and hellva nice guy.

Hope they both go well.

Belated report …. Twas a big night at the SFS (or at least afterwards …).

Tahs U20’s will certainly feel they left a lot of points out there. Tight 5 completely dominated for the first 60 mins but there was a lot of dropped ball out wide which meant they didn’t pile on the points as expected. Sharples at half was excellent and the second rows were probably the pick of the forwards, and when they departed it was 33-0. Some of the Force back row subs actually looked pretty good and Prass at 15 steadied the ship. Boston Fakafanua for the Force was ok but would love to see him back in Tahs colours!

A lot to play for up in Brisbane next week for the Reds vs Tahs U20. Interesting to see if the Tahs revert back to the XV that started against the Brumbies (although Durbridge, Goddard and Edwin Langi all have medium to long term injuries now and unavailable).

Chris Whitaker’s first squad to be named some time in the week after that game (Brums and Force U20's play each other twice in the next 8 days). I understand that initial squad will have a camp in Coffs Harbour and match vs Japan U23. U20 TRC for April/May still not confirmed as going ahead, with matches vs Fiji and/or NZ being lined up as a back up. U20 World Championships in Italy late June and into mid-July.

I believe Durbidge’s is a foot injury. What injury has Langi picked up from the Brumbies game ?
