QLD Rugby needs to get games happening for the u20 academy. NSW has played ACT already this year hence Grey had something to look at.
that's a really good point. We had those two Under 18 was it games late last year? Maroon and White? Was a team not picked out of that?

When think about it , no U20 Academy competition and no NRC, it’s not hard to understand why we appear to be going backwards. Of course there’s the lack of money thingy……. but what causes what ?

Seeing the result of the Gen Blue U20s against Southern Districts last weekend we could at least go part of the way to solving this by entering an U20s squad in each of the respective Club 1st grade comps.

Someone also mentioned that sometimes this year the 5 Aus and they assumed the Drua will play each other without their Wallabies. Sort of filling the gap. Honestly, wouldn't mind if they opened that up to having a SRU/BRU rep squad also enter.

I agree. However that been said, QLD had schoolboys and colts tournaments last year whereas NSW didn’t have either.

Aren't most of these games recorded?

If we are relying on the head coach attending one or two games each Saturday around the country to identify and select players we're screwed.
Not as screwed as listening to player managers over promote their stable.

Maybe video. I’m not convinced.
But confident not in person because of border and quarantine restriction.
This is only first camp but looking at list and assuming that:

- many QLD rep are now playing for the other state including Hough, Ripley, Gibson, Gordon and Romano. So those academy nominate/push their recruit. Who has moved interstate and was not selected?
- Lastus Auakai (Qld Brothers Colts captain) picked last year in JW squad but not 2022?
- very high relative proportion of Waratah and academy name maybe due to recent NSW 20s game. Despite QLD dominance at this age group.
- low ACT rep number - benchmarked v NSW?
- only two forward selected from end of last season U19 QPR Colt Maroon v White game (one of them, Gibson who is now ironically no longer a Red but a Waratah!)
- only 2 back picked from that game. Werchon and Aubrey

So guesswork and do his best. But no real benchmarking merit process just reputation selection.

The squad updates are for each camp no?

Doesn’t mean players won’t be called in at a later date.

Last year Pasitoa, Gordon , Thomas, Flook and Vaihu were all missing from early camps , but were in the final squad to play NZ. In fact they weren’t even at the last camp where they play they run their intrasquad selection trial.

But that was because they were all playing Super Rugby or training with a super rugby squad.

Yep , Grealy is on the bench tomorrow night. At a guess would say a few extended squad members are being kept with their franchises for training purposes.

Don't know the squad well enough , but are there any fully contracted players named? Or just those on development contracts?

Edit : just saw Thomas' name

How much benefit do you think the coach gets from being able to watch club rugby games live?

The games are generally on concurrently. I'm sure all the coaches attend games as they can but it's a pretty inefficient method of scouting for form in the modern day.

You could travel to Brisbane for the weekend and maybe see two games of rugby that are relevant to your interests and in the meantime lose a lot of time that could have been spent reviewing a bunch of match replays.

Then you've got the ACT, Victoria and WA still to cover.

the irony of that statement given your screen name should not be lost on people
The reality is that player agents very rarely "find" the talent. They focus on "selling" once it lands in their lap.( read here the Sean Macmahon or the Hunter Paisami story).
True scouts know how to and look beyond the hype lauded onto some of these kids.

Should be some protocol regard the player agent commentating on STAN. Like cash for comment. Guess what/who they highlight?

The clue is in the title. They are the agent for the player and deal with their contracting.

Why would a player agent spend their time scouting for the next big thing? They are far better off creating a business whereby the talented young player wants their services.
