The Brumbies were already strengthened by some Waratah players and lost by 90 anyway.

Agree the comp doesn’t work. Those Brumby and Rebels teams looked about the strength of a good Sydney school team. The U16 Randwick team would have easily beaten both.

The best thing for that age group would be a National champs with Melbourne, ACT, WA playing the Sydney and Qld districts. Then maybe a NSW v Qld match.

My guess is, if you asked someone in the system, they would say that this is run as a counter to Harrold Matts and SG ball and that is their "strategic validation" for the competition.

But

It's not working
It's not competitive.
Clearly, it isn't doing the job of keeping players.
And the general standard is very poor - so it is not making better players either

Just like Super Rugby, it needs a major rethink.

Not much of a rethink required; basically like the Senior Super Rugby squads worked, pick the best 150 players nationally (yes more from NSW & QLD), allocating them equally across the brands (afraid it means quite a lot of local lads from ACT, VIC & WA would miss out though…)

closer games, better spectacle, rewarding the best players, inspiring those on the cusp…

I saw today that the NRL is proposing to introduce some new rules around juniors, including player agents restricted from signing junior talent until the calendar year in which they turn 18, and restricting the number of players a club can have on its books between the ages of 16 to 19. Should rugby follow suit wrt the player managers? Will this maybe impact the numbers of schoolboy rugby players being drawn across to league?Thoughts?

Do you know what the number is?

People generally have a disdain towards agents and it's caused by a few at the very top have caused this because they get such a hold of a Club if they have management of too many players inside. They can dictate coaching hires/fires and alike. You could argue this can hurt young players through the inexperience and inability to negotiate with a Club who will deal directly with them. Agents know rates and worth and a Clubs goal is to look after the Club, which means pay the player as little as possible.

The full wording that I have seen is:

New contracting model for players aged 16-19 by 2026, which caps remuneration and number of contracts, regulates player relocation, agent engagement and scholarships, and lifts the minimum contracting age to the calendar year the player turns 16.

The model will include two categories:

• Junior Academy Contracts (Under 16/Under 17)

• Senior Academy Contracts (Under 18/Under19)

Anyone got eyes on Riverviews Hooker Charlie Briggs, I have seen this "otherworldly player" single handedly manhandle St Jospeh's forward pack to victory with his dominance in the scrum and bullet throws in the line outs. Very keen to see how levels up this year for the dominate View side.

Barker's 16s will dominate in key positions and prove too strong, especially if U15 recruit Tommy J plays up in the 16As.
The battle between Knox and Waves will be a close one.

I'd wager Joeys will unexpectedly lose to either Kings, View, or Shore—I’m just not sure which one. I believe Kings 15s beat them last year. The fight for 2nd and 3rd will be a tight contest.

It was view in the 15s that beat Joeys last year in the final round, quite an upset I believe as the 15's squad looked 'invincible' the entire season. Barker and Joeys have a trial match in a couple weeks, will be interesting to see the result of that match.
