Sydney Subbies 2025

Here To Do

Chris McKivat (8)

I asked Chat GPT for the best final series format for a 6 team competition. results below.

Finals Series Format (Top 4 from 6 Teams)

Week 1: Semi-Finals

  • Game 1 (1st vs 2nd)Winner goes straight to Grand Final, loser gets a second chance
  • Game 2 (3rd vs 4th)Loser eliminated, winner moves on to Preliminary Final

Week 2: Preliminary Final

  • Loser of Game 1 vs Winner of Game 2Winner advances to Grand Final

Week 3: Grand Final

  • Winner of Game 1 vs Winner of Preliminary Final
That is the McIntyre-Page final four, which has been used a number of times previously. The only issue is that you have 3 weeks of finals football rather than 2 with straight-elimination semis.

In fairness, 1 and 2 do get a benefit by facing lower-ranked opponents in that system (1v4, 2v3), but given we don't do "home" finals in most places, it's not much better.

Div 5 predictions - R5

HVRU v Renegades - Valley have looked mostly untroubled so far, tho Maccabi's starting lineup was competitive for long periods. Valley have a lot of guys with history playing together and will be a hard nut to crack. Backing the boys, as always.

Redfield v Harlequins - should be a very interesting game. Harlequins have a good wide game, similar to ROBRs, but Quins have a slightly bigger pack, and perhaps a bit more depth where ROBRs replacement 2nd Grade guys are mostly younger, whippet types. Going away side here, by a sliver.

Canterbury v Epping - Epping to have no issues here.

Raptors v Maccabi - depends who shows up for Raptors on any given week. They only had 23 players against us and couldn't maintain the effort through to the end. If Maccabi can do enough damage before their replacements come on, I think they'll pip the home side.

Sea Lice v Merrylands moved to John Dwyer Oval, along with Burra Colts v St Pat's.

Shortest oval in Subbies with Lyne Park no longer in use

Div 3 Round 5 Predictions:

LCOI @ Blacktown:
The only two winless teams do battle and to quote the great boxing idiom, someone's O has got to go. LCOI has gone against what is likely the 3 strongest teams in the comp so far and been competitive but ended up on the wrong side, whereas Blacktown has found it very tough sledding after two weeks in Division 3. I think Blacktown gives them a nervous crack at home if they can hold their discipline, but I'm backing the joint venture to get it done here and move to 1 win on the back of the Exner brothers in space out wide. LCOI by 8. I'll take Blacktown for a home upset in 2s, whilst the Colts game should be a belter, give me Old Barker at home by 3.

Hills @ Beecroft: 1 plays 2 in the game of the round here. Beecroft, ably steered around by the ever-classy Lachy Brooke at 10 and led up front by the dangerous and physical Luke Meehan, have looked in a class of their own in this division. Hills are top of the ladder by virtue of an extra game in hand and just got pipped on the bell by Knox at the Yat. Hills play well on the front foot but break down a fraction if you can get in their grill. I think Beecroft does just that and stamps themselves at $1.20 competition favourites. Beecroft by 10. Hills by 30 in 2s though, they're the heavyweights down there. I'll take the Crofties at home in Colts vs Colleagues II in a tight one.

Knox @ Hornsby: Was last week's Hornsby win a sign of them getting their season back on track or just punching down on Blacktown? We'll find out when they host Knox this week. Knox's Evans is one of the real strike players in the division but needs to hold his head in order for Knox to be great, hes firey. Fitzgerld at 10 is also electric with a boot for days, but he'll have his hands full with his opposite man, Hornsby's Hunter Bird who's been a standout. I think Hornsby has improved, but not enough to get up in this one. Knox by 12. I'll back Knox in 2s and Colts convincingly for what they seem to call a 'knobwash'.

Desperate for a dry track one of these days.

PFE2
Very accurate predication PFE2, Beecroft 29 - Hills 19. Game was a very stop start affair. Punishing & torrid affair between both packs. Beecroft back line a class above in attack & defence!

what happened in firsts today fitz?

Very much our lack of cohesion versus their smoothly oiled machine. I was speaking to one of their guys after and they said it was the best they'd played all year, after some flat performances and a bit of disruption.

Having to rearrange our backline before kickoff didn't help, especially when the guy playing 12 wasn't at training and that's where a lot of holes were. We've been unable to put the same lineup on the park 2 weeks in a row, and the teams we name haven't made it to game day intact once.

We had the best scrum on the park by a mile and IMHO didn't get enough reward for that from the ref. A couple of key lineout failures resulted in chaos ball, and Valley pounced.

Their fitness also allowed them to capitalise on any mistakes.

The times we did get close to the line it was a silly error or two that resulted in a penalty or turnover. The system we trained wasn't implemented, and we paid the price.

Is any club having a better year than Redfield this year? 10 wins across 2 grades for 10
Bonus points. Guess we will see the true reflection on there season next week when they play Valley whose undefeated in 1s.

I know it’s harder in the higher grades with more teams etc. But impressive start by Redfield.
