Sydney Subbies 2025

Distinct memories of calling the final game before 2021 got abandoned - HAC came to Rothwell and we played them in 1s. One of their players got carded and picked up the 50m flag, javelined it towards the pavilion (not many on the ground, thankfully) and then kicked a chair off the bench. Thankfully he didn't have that strong an arm otherwise I might have been in the splash zone.
I love trying to explain that stuff to Subbies when you’re supposed to have the meeting of 5 to control it all. There’s some wild things that go on out there in Subbies land

Poor bloke. A simple case of wrong place, wrong time. I blame RA.

Take a look at the divisions on Subbies website… What on gods green earth are these guys smoking?????

Wow this makes interesting reading.

On first glance:

* Div 3 What has happened to Sydney Harbour?
* Div 4 - Are St Ives and Brothers only competing in those grades?
* Div 5 - Quins with a big drop, guess the colts issue forced subbies hands?
* Div 5 - All those clubs were not in that division last season. There had been rumours Redfield were on the up in terms of playing numbers
* Div 6 - No sign of Balmain, are they finished?

From the website (changes underlined):

Division One is a six-team competition with clubs competing for the Kentwell, Burke, Barbour (U21 Colts), Whiddon, Judd and Sutherland Cups.
Teams (8): Blue Mountains, Colleagues, Drummoyne, Hunters Hill, Lindfield, Mosman, Newport (+1), Waverley

Division Two is a five-team competition with clubs competing for the Barraclough, Stockdale, Robertson (U21 Colts), Blunt & Richardson Cups.
Teams (6): Briars, Forest (-1), Petersham, St Patrick's, Sydney Irish (+1), UNSW

Division Three is a three-team competition with clubs competing for the Clark, Farrant and Nicholson (U21 Colts) Cups.
Teams (8): Beecroft (-1), Hawkesbury Valley, Hills (-1), Hornsby (+1), Knox, Lane Cove Old Ignatians, Old Barker, Western Raptors (+1)

Division Four is a two-team competition with clubs competing for the Jeffrey and Radford (U21 Colts) Cups.
Teams (7): Balmain (+1), Brothers [Colts] (+1), Chatswood, Macquarie Uni (+1), St Ives (+1) [Jeffrey Cup], Kings, Wakehurst

Division Five is a two-team competition with clubs competing for the McLean and Grose Cups.
Teams (6 - all dropped from higher divisions except Penrith): Canterbury (-1), Epping (-3), Penrith (new), Redfield (-1), Renegades (-1), Sydney Harlequins (-2)

Division Six is a one-team competition with clubs competing for the Meldrum Cup.
Teams (9 - all dropped from higher divisions): Blacktown (-1), Burraneer (-1), Colleagues Convicts (-1), Georges River (-1), Maccabi (-1), Manly Savers (-1), Merrylands (-3), North Cronulla (-1), Oatley (-1)

Not listed (at least, not yet): Sydney Harbour (were Div 3)

A big reshuffle at the lower end of the pyramid - don't personally understand why they shifted so many teams and cups around 4th-6th Div either but will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Big losers are the Rams, Quins and Merrylands - feel especially for Epping and Quins given their successes relatively recently

Will be interesting to see how Penrith fare, although coming into Div 5 is not exactly auspicious

Looks like Sydney Harbour have died in a blaze of glory. What an interesting club, one year without a premiership and they decide to pull up stumps.

I surmise that St Ives only have Grade, and Brothers only have Colts - therefore they fill a 1+1 space in that Division.

I know that both clubs are looking to build back both elements of their roster.

As with last year, I'd be hesitant to put a circle around any of this until draws are released.

Trial matches this weekend are going to be interesting.

Division 4 has been repurposed for Colts, so we've not exactly been "dropped" ;)

It's so confusing - numerically you have in the same way we got promoted to Div 2 when they split it after the joint season. I agree though with your assessment of the reality of the situation

Seems like there’s a lot of surprised people tonight with these changes. Whilst I know most clubs representatives aren’t on here it still seems a massive shift in thinking
In fairness, I think those involved and with skin in the game have been kept abreast of the potential changes. Doesn't mean they can change Subbies' minds, but I don't think anyone worth their position as a club rep would have been blindsided.

Interesting the "switch" between Divs 4 and 5 is similar to just before I got involved at Briars - they didn't have Colts at the time so got dropped from Div 3 to Div 4 prior to the 2015 season (which I joined during).

I think it was a bit of a wake-up call for a lot of people involved with the club as we spent the next 5 seasons trying to climb back up in what seemed to be an abyss - we weren't good enough on the park no matter how good we were behind the scenes. Then everything clicked in 2019 with a strong Colts and 1st XV season and we haven't looked back ever since, even if we had a dry spell between the post-COVID era and last season's 1sts run to the GF.

I just hope that the teams who've been given a promotion (at least on paper) take the opportunity and run with it and that those who've been placed lower can find a way to bounce back. At the end of the day, we can hate each other on matchday (until the beers flow in the evening) but we're all in this together.
