Yep it

Id take a 6 team comp with Whales, Forest, Lindfield, St Pats and UNSW in it in a heartbeat. 3 games within 30mins would make a nice change to the 1hr+ every other club is away. Would be pretty even comp too.
Thats it. If there was some viability to be found in a geographically based comp id be all for it. People may be more inclined to play if they dont have to drive an 1hr plis every second week.

In all seriousness, I get your point.

It would make things far easier at home if our games were all within 30 minutes of our ground. Hills Football (Soccer) broke away from Granville once they were big enough to have their own league, and talking to their guys it was a game changer.

BUT on the downside, you end up with a bit of isolationism. If a club exists in a smaller bubble for a while, and then is forced out of their comfort zone, it hurts. A couple of clubs on the north shore and up through the beaches lost players when they tried to go to 2 Grades, because guys don't want to travel.

And how are their results at lapstone?

Pretty strong the last 2 years :) Since 2020:

These figures show just how hard it is to step up a division and that clubs shouldn’t be written off after 1 tough year. Mountains had a tough couple of years before hitting on success.
I can only imagine the spray they would of been coping on here in 2020…

Does Anyone know what happened to Manly Savers. They had a couple awesome years with decent numbers, got promoted, and seemingly collapsed early in the season. Now they’re back to being undefeated.

Could be multiple reasons.

Savers finally won a GF a few years back which could a seen a few stalwarts hang up the boots.

They had a history of using travellers to build player depth. Large amounts of backpacker accommodation in the area. Was there not a change in Federal Law which may have reduced the numbers of backpackers?

2023 was the year the of the great youth overseas trip after 2-3 years of travel uncertainty.

Combine all the above with a move up from lower divisions may have dismantled their progress.

Blue Mountains reached a Kentwell Cup preliminary final in 2019 if memory serves me correctly so wasn't the slow start you make it out to be. Not saying this to be critical but Blueys recent success has been limited to 1st Grade and is more so a result of top class recruitment in the top grade.

Bluey’s have also always had at least one or two of their lower grades be pretty decent strong too. And even when they haven’t got results in previous years, they’ve been in games and the other team has walked off fairly sore after a tussle with the mountain men. They were on the up anyway but certainly saw a bit of a bump when Penrith folded.

Good on them. Newport played them in a preseason trial and they only had 14 players turn up. Good bunch of guys, heaps of Poms, and standard was pretty solid. Probs top 4 in 3rd grade level of footy.

Division 3 Round 8 predictions:

The second round of fixtures kicks off this week and boy is it a doozy, 1 plays 2, 3 plays 4, 5 plays 6 and 7 plays 8., plenty on the line and a good chance to see who's improved from Round 1 two months ago.

Sydney Irish v Merrylands: Game of the round and game of the year in the regular season, the undefeated Irish, fresh off a solid win vs Valley take on Merrylands who are undefeated bar their week 1 clash vs Irish (a 29-26 nail biter) and fresh off a demolition job against Knox in the wet. Merrylands organising a big bus to South Coogee to ensure a large player and supporter presence, should be a cracker. I keep waiting for Irish to fall off but they just keep winning, I'll go against them one last time, probably for the last time this regular season. Merrylands by 7.

Knox v Hawkesbury Valley:
The best of the rest square off this week, both sides desperate for a win to stay in the hunt for the top 4. Knox won 17-7 all the way back in week 1 but you have to imagine a lot has changed since then. Knox was throttled by Merrylands before the week off and will be keen to make amends. I'll take Knox in a close one - though you never know which Valley turns up. Home field a large factor as the Valley boys will be stepping into unfamiliar territory at Lofberg Oval for the first time. Knox by 10.

Sydney Harbour vs Sydney Harlequins:
Sydney H east edition takes on Sydney H inner city edition in this clash, both sides appear evenly matched on paper and the best outside of the runaway top 2. A short trip over to Rose Bay shouldn't hurt the Quinns lads too much - who's run of form includes a demo job on LCOI, a decent scrap against Merrylands and a solid win over BOBs, whilst Harbour has been limping lately, with unconvincing wins against BOBs and LCOI and a drubbing at home vs the Irish. The form says take the Quinns, but style makes fights, and Harbour got up convincingly in round 1. Tough one to pick, but I'll go Harbour at home in Rose Bay in a coin flip. Harbour by 3.

Old Barker vs Lane Cove Old Ignations:
The cellar dwellers square off in a clash that will have major implications for the spoon 'race' as the year progresses, potentially both sides last chance to notch a victory this year, although BOBs have been better of late. LCOI won this clash in round 1 in a high scoring 42-31 win but havent sniffed a result in the last 5 weeks, whilst BOBs went down narrowly to Harbour last week in one of their better showings. I'm taking BOBs to get off the mark here and move off the bottom of the ladder. Keep an eye on those bonus points rest of the way boys! Barker by 10.

Yours in park footy,
PFE.

Savers also seemed to hurt themselves late in 2022 by deciding to ignore a lot of their committed players to play the superstars that were only around for 3-4 games of the year hoping for trophies that didn’t come

Hornsby
(1) v Renegades (3) - another week where we are missing 15+ and about half of those are First Grade. Weddings in winter ffs.... Should be a win to the home side, but you either win or learn, and we'll learn a lot.

Kings (8) v Chatswood (5) - tough to call. Stags no game in a few weeks. Kings probably recovered from the loss to Raptors in the wet. Who is fresher or rustier? Going home side.

Canterbury (4) v Raptors (2) - will depend on numbers for the visitors on the day but I think they have enough firepower to overcome Berries.

Redfield (7) v Wakehurst (6) - interesting times for both clubs, who are both not that far from 4th spot at this point, with games in hand. Going with Redfield at home.

Chatswood: 2 games in hand (Redfield, Canterbury)

Redfield: 1 game in hand (Chatswood)

Canterbury: 1 game in hand (Chatswood)

Kings & Wakehurst also have a double points game which makes things interesting

Div 2 Rd 8

Beecroft (6th) vs Hills (3rd)
: If Beecroft are to keep their semi's hope alive it starts with a home win against Hills. Byes, rain and long weekends may have sapped Hills momentum as their last game was a 22--22 draw against Petersham on the 18th of May! Beecroft should of won this first round clash and let a 20 point lead slip with 15 to go, my tip is they wont make that mistake again. Beecroft by 7.

Petersham (5th) vs Briars (4th):
Another crucial game with both teams having a wet weather game in hand. Briars won the 1st rd clash with a 15-5 victory but with Petersham back at home I think they will have too much in the forwards. Shammies by 10

UNSW (7th) vs Newport (1st):
UNSW still have a WW in hand against Petersham but are sitting precariously at the bottom of the table winless after round 1. They are a much better side than that, registering close losses to heavyweights Breakers and St Pats but then left ruing losses when rundown late against Hills & Beecroft. Their best result is a draw with Briars and that should of been a win but for a late try to Briars. Fitness issues?I'm guessing they will need to win at least 5 from last 7 to make the semis, with a tough assignment against undefeated Newport this w/e. I think it will be close but this Breakers side is good, Newport by 7

Div 1 - No placement to keep people on their toes

Mosman - HH. Rain again on a Saturday out at Mosman. Mosman have been good this year, HH are starting to hit their straps as well with a couple of convincing wins over the last few weeks. This will be a great game if the weather allows it. HH to come away with a 3 point win

Waverley - Blue Mountains - Pending travel, I can see another strong Blue Mountains performance in this one. Both teams can be undisciplined at times, so could come down to who gets the least cards. Last game it appeared that the ref wanted to keep the game close by binning numerous blueys players. Waverley love to spin to ball side to side, which wont work in the wet. Blueys by 7

Lindfield -
Colleagues - Old Soldier in the wet could be one of the worst grounds to play at. The pitch is terrible and the ground itself gets chopped up easily. Lindfield will use the home field advantage well and continue Colleagues poor run this year. This may be only time I tip Lindfield for the year so get the job done. Lindfield by 3

Forest - Drummoyne. Forest have been good this year and have talent in their side, just missing a bit of composure and experience to score points when they are on top. Drummoyne 3-3, also a bit hit and miss pending on who is playing for the week. I expect after a few weeks will have their top team back on the field and should run away late with this one. Dirty Reds by10
