Super Rugby Pacific 2025

Shaun Stevenson off to Kubota & could debut as soon as Saturday...

But it's only for six games max then he's due to rejoin Tribe for Super Rugby 2025 (will likely miss Rounds 1 - 3) after which it's back to Kubota: the reporting I've seen* doesn't mention any Harbour commitments so not sure if he's been released from them or will play some or all of NPC before leaving NZ.

* Edit: NZHurld story says it's unclear if he'll play NPC so maybe that's still the subject of negotiations.
Really like this outcome, he been released from NZR contract, but not Chiefs one. By letting him play a few games in Japan now he will be pretty pro Chiefs during season, rather than a reluctant player? I actually think ENS will do pretty well in 15 jersey anyway.

Wallace Sititi having knee surgery tomorrow. Tribe coach McMillan being very cagey about the nature of the injury, when it happened (other than on EOYT (but he played the full 80 v Italy)), how long his rehab might be.

I mean, the obvious question is, why is the surgery is only taking place now. Even if waiting for swelling to subside, that's a big break between the injury occurring and surgery taking place for a professional athlete.

^ according to McMillan there were no surgeons available

FWIW I'm thinking it was an extra-ciricular mishap that he hasn't recovered from as quickly as hoped for so he's then had it looked at properly & been told he needs an op.

Apparently Wallace has been on holiday and hadn't done much about it, walking etc on it was ok etc. The rumour has been around for a couple of weeks that something was wrong.

Looking forward to the 2025 Super Rugby … the world‘s shortest rugby competition with the longest off season!! You reckon it needs improvement? Ah, yes!

Smart man.

Why use your annual leave period for something that should be considered sick leave!

It doesn't really stack up. He's obviously enjoyed his what 3-4 week holiday and somehow delaying surgery has meant he's out for the season?

There were plenty of knee surgeons around Aus in December, so they could have sent him across the ditch. Otherwise, NZ really doesn't have the beaches for their local Orthopods to fly to over Christmas yeah?

Exactly the point Ig, noone realsied he was injured from what I have heard and read. He was walking etc on it good as gold, and never thought there was a problem until he arrived at preseason for Chiefs. I suggest a bit more experienced player would of got it checked early. There are plenty of knee surgeons here , and as you say if there wasn't and if anyone was worried they would of flown him to Aus quick smart. From what II can gather he actually stayed overseas at end of tour last year, and didn't come home until in New Year (though I not sure how true that is).

Oh to be 22yo and be able to be on the loose in Europe for a month or so huh?? Not sure I would be worried about a niggle in knee either!;):)

From [https://www.theroar.com.au/2025/01/...-depends-on-australia-pulling-its-finger-out/] Quoting Marshall - not on his own on these thoughts in Aus as well as NZ:
“Now that Australia have dropped the Rebels – hopefully reinforcing some of those other sides with squad depth and competition for places – they’re going to grow and be much more resilient.

And then from [https://www.theroar.com.au/2025/01/...delivers-update-on-schmidts-wallabies-future/] Doran clarifying his thoughts on the RA position:
RA’s position is hardly surprising given the governing body is trying to slow the wage inflation, which has put most national unions at risk of going under financially.

Australian Super Pacific teams are not competing simply within Australia but in an international marketplace and a cross code domestic sport competition. That market is not particularly "free movement" given the challenges in shifting internationally or cross code, but it is not closed. There is a "sugar hit" for 2025.

I can't see how the 2025 step in Aus team quality is sustainable. What am I missing? Surely if the current quantity of talent in teams is required for SuperPac, but the wages are to be kept to a point that cannot manage this, the entire SuperPac concept doesn't work for Aus teams?

Maybe you're right.

At the same time, I remember an interview with Will Genia (I think it was one of the old G&GR pods) and Will mentioned they're always playing with a niggle. So I can easily see this being chalked up as a "She'll be right, just needs some time away to heal up".

I can easily see someone getting it checked out before going on holiday though.

There's an argument for all parties stuffing this up.

Guys play busted and hurt and anything he may have felt might not have been any worse than normal self healing issues. You also get use to things and learn to live it until a professional "goes did you realise"... If he's torn something like a PCL then you can go about your business pretty regularly until you try and do something that bit extra and you think oh fuck I better get that checked.

Some will question medical staff for potentially not questioning players well enough post tour as well.

Yep , that's what I suggesting, but as I said he never came home it seems,he stayed in Europe so maybe didn't think there anything to worry about. Just guess work, only really Wallace himself can tell us.

You guys are seriously overthinking it.

[Chiefs] looked at the schedule and saw they have to face the Killdozer twice inside the first month of the regular season.

It is the one and only reason that elegantly explains why their coaches leaving to train racehorses (fucken lmao) and star players are suddenly developing season ending injuries from months ago, or are trying to weasel themselves out of their contracts ASAP.
