Some good signs for the crossover games to be played normally - New Zealand looks to be moving to "phase 2" of their covid response and effectively giving up on covid zero:

At that level it's probably still too restrictive and doesn't solve the border issue, but it's a pretty big shift in strategy that will likely see other restrictions reassessed, which is more or less what happened here when case numbers blew up.

No phase 2 won't, but there's a big shift in the thinking from elimination to suppression/management. The case numbers will almost certainly escalate from here and it pushes a rethink of restrictions and timelines as a bunch of things that only make sense in an elimination context are removed. Offers some hope that things will have moved significantly in a month or twos time

^ the "big shift in the thinking from elimination to suppression/management" happened months ago. Those measures were so successful against Delta that it briefly seemed possible that it might be eliminated but suppression & vaccination were always the goals. Same goals apply to Omicron but obviously the numbers are going to be far greater.

GLDO & 50/22 can see the point but not 100% convinced.
Golden point a hard no, either golden try, extra time or just call it a draw.

Captains challenge yes was naff. Golden point I get as make it try equally might not get a result and drag it out.
I really like the gldo as keeps the game flowing then seeing 5 m scrum resets. Also don’t mind the 50/22 as In any case don’t see that many in a game.

Basically 20 minute red card, goal line drop out, 50-22 and golden point (not golden try) extra time are all there. The terrible captains challenge used in SRAo has thankfully been dropped.

They did retain it, but I don't agree with the characterisation - it dissuades brain dead hit up after hit up and still gives the attacking team a good platform to attack of on the return.

Bang on WOB, dislike the Golden Point , a draw is a result. Not at all convinced on 50-22 rubbish, and real happy captains challenge has been tossed.
Also thought I heard on news something about 30 sec for scrum?

Unfortunately for all the detractors of the golden point rule - it's what the broadcasters want.

GLDO shouldn’t be in place for held up or if the defensive team grounds the ball after taking it back behind the try line. It’s not enough reward the attacking team running it back from 30-50 out after almost scoring or forcing the defensive team to ground the ball.

I also heard that TMO's will only get involved with try/ no try & "serious foul play" (presumably that means Yellow Card/ Red Card) decisions. Which I like but have heard before & wonder how long it'll last this time.

Yep and reality is if rule changes around the edges get more interest in the games so be it. More fans, more money in the game, better players…etc etc…

It’s still a 5 m scrum if the defending team takes it back over the try line, assuming it’s the same variation as the rest of the world is using.
