$1.4 per annum in NRL for an above average player is not uncommon.
Rugby Australia and NZR will need to find a way to generate cashflow in the coming couple of years. I think we’ll see more contracts like this coming through hard and fast.

I think that's overstating it a tad.

According to this, only the top 7 players are above $1 mil per season and the highest is $1.175 mil

Following on from the news that Tom Banks has been offered a quite simply astronomical amount of money to go play in Japan (how can you say no to that?!) I wanted to ask a few questions of the GAGR forum to better understand the dynamics of the current Super Rugby setup. It seems to be we are steadily being blown away by the vast amounts of money offered OS, and Super Rugby is on its way to being reduced to a mickey mouse competition if things don't change. There is plenty of work Rugby Australia can do in it's own backyard, but I'd like to better grasp what Super Rugby can do to supercharge its own product and get more money coming in. Some of these may be quite obvious to many so sorry in advance!

(I'm not trolling or fishing here - I'd just like to improve my own understand of the lay of the land. So if we can avoid this devolving into a 'yeah but you guys suck' 'nah it's you guys who are shit!' discussion from the usual suspects that'd be great. I however reserve the right to say this myself at the end if I so choose).

Who runs Super Rugby Pacific? SANZAAR? Do we have an independent Super Rugby organizational body making decisions solely focused of the integrity of this competition?

Is there a salary cap for all teams? If so what is it?

Rugby Australia provides a certain amount of player top ups. Does NZ do the same? Are these top ups exempt from Super Rugby salary caps for both nations?

I read often that NZ see the ABs as the top of their pyramid cash cow (of course, huge brand and nation defining team) - does this mean a reluctance to tinker with Super Rugby as essentially their high performance development program?

Do all Aus and NZ Super teams have academies?

I'm sure I'll have more questions as the convo progresses but am happy to start there!
In answer to your question from what I know.
SANZAAR is who the Super comp is run under, not sure how it all works re Super and test rugby, but I assume Super pays more of costs?
Pretty sure there is a salary cap, but not sure what it is. Just googled and Aus salary cap is supposedly $5 mill, and can't see what NZ's is only that they can only be paid lowest $75000.00 to max $195,000 per annum. Also draft players can get $50,000.
Yep NZR and RA provide a top up for contracted players for national teams. Nothing to do with Super salary caps as it for test rugby etc. NZ players and a few Aus players also get paid for NPC rugby, and a few most Aus players are also contracted to clubs and get a bit more there (well I know they do in Qld and NSW.
AB can also get more through endorsements etc, ie Dan Carter's Jockey underwear etc etc, but most obviously not that big. I not sure what the rules are in Aus, but I would guess that they do.
All NZ super teams have academies, and would assume Aus is same, know that Reds, Tahs, Brumbies have.

There is definitely one of those players whose salary is not correct, and you need to add another $400K. And another two, who I’m sure are above what is stated.
Maybe overstated, but the average NRL player earns above majority of our Wallabies.
What’s the solution?
I am amazed if average NRL player is actually earning more tha Wallabies, I was under impression those days were over.

Other question is how true are figure for Banks? It's not another case of pushing RA etc to come to party with more $s is it?

There lies the problem they can’t work together to fix super rugby as it isn’t focussed just on this competition but rather outside (national team) agendas. Hence I think things are going to get worse before better and the $1.4m for banks should be setting alarm bells personally for RA and NZRU. As best way to ward of Japan and Europe threat is to create more successful competition that gets more eyeballs, sponsors fans, broadcast money etc. it should not be this hard…

Speaking of NRL, I wonder if there might be a few NRL players suddenly thinking again about Japanese rugby opportunities? Perhaps the Japanese clubs would like to convert a few league players for us?
Why bother though?
They can already target rugby players in Aus and NZ getting paid less. Don’t need to take the risk/effort of converting them or dealing with shit like Blake Ferguson. Not to say union players are exempt from those type of incidents. .

Too late. Everyone has just decided to co-opt this one in its stead.

Back on topic, please.

The Road to 2022 Super Rugby Glory goes through Eden Park.

That much is inarguable.

The Reigning Super Rugby World Champion Auckland Blues
would like to welcome the other participants in the 2022 competition.

We look forward to your brave, plucky teams playing bit-part cameo roles as speedbumps
and tackle dummies, uncredited casting extras in the Blues swashbuckling adventure of 2022.

Nights of terror, days of lost hope, the dreams of children irrepairably savaged
right before your very eyes. And that's just the NSFW Waratahs pre-season.

Bloody oath there would be. Be stupid not be thinking about it.

It's quite possible the NRL has been blackmarked for the next few years by the Japanese comp after the Fergo stuff.

Most of the current articles about footy players behaving badly are from NRL circles. A story came out last week about Jimmy Maloney another ex-NRL player testing positive to recreational drug use playing 2nd division footy in France.

Not saying it isn't happening in other codes, but if anyone from the Japanese comp wanted to get a scope over the NRL players, they'll find plenty of hits in the media which would probably deter the Japanese teams from signing people so soon after the Fergo thing.

6:00 Friday AEST Chiefs v Waratahs. LOLLNSFW could be 7th on the ladder by Monday morning
8:30 Friday Moana Pasifika v Western Force

7:45 Saturday Hurricanes v Reds. this will be 2nd best match of the round I reckon
2:00 Sunday Highlanders v Brumbies. If the BumBreeze lose this it will be a massive facepalm for Strayan rugby
4:30 Sunday Crusaders v Rebels. Oh dear. Someone's about to face an angry backlash.

In all seriuosness, I am looking forward to next few weeks a hell of a lot. We finally going to see some different opposition, and although the games are being played at times to suit Aus viewers, I think I will be watching most games over weekend, and the next few weeks.
I not too confident on Canes chances on Sat, and Clan may have a struggle on Sun. Chiefs/Tahs game will be maybe a little closer tha we thought it would be earlier in year, can't really see Crusaders or Blues losing, and MP (Moana Pasifika)/Force should be close too.

Tribe v 'tahs too close to call
MP (Moana Pasifika) v Force too close to call
Blues 20+ v Drua
Reds 10+ v 'canes
Brumbies 15+ v Clan
CruSadists 20+ v Rebels

Probably end up 3-all on NZ v Aus basis.

More injury issues for Clan with coach McMillan describing Stevenson's knee injury as serious & sounding rather wishful-hopeful that Weber's shoulder injury was just a stinger. The good news is that Xavier Roe is likely to be available for the Aus trip.

It would be weird if the Blues had to play conservative sensible rugby to grind out a dull win vs an exciting attacking team.

I hope both teams go fullblown polynesian basketball basketcase jailbreak and we wind up with a skywalking throwback vintage score of 54-43.
