Former Springbok flyhalf Braam van Straaten confirmed to rugby365.com that the Lions have called him in as a kicking coach on what could be a long term contract.
Lions coach John Mitchell announced on Monday that he was in the market for a coach with kicking expertise and unsurprisingly Van Straaten's name was at the top of his list.
"I'm on my way there [to Johannesburg] to work with the Lions on Thursday and Friday," Van Straaten told rugby365.com in an exclusive interview.
"They want me to help them now and then they'll put a proposal together for the future to help out with all their kickers throughout the province."
The highly-rated kicking ace developed a strong kicking philosophy during his playing career and is passionate about passing on his kicking knowledge to today's stars.
"I want kickers to learn their trade the right way so that they don't keep on making the same mistakes over and over again," he said.
"Once they make that intellectual property their own - their kicking changes and they can iron out all the mistakes."
The big task at the Lions for Van Straaten is to help starlet Elton Jantjies re-discover his kicking boots and find that confidence that has deserted the talented pivot this season.
"I made contact with John [Mitchell] a while ago and told him that I was available if they needed anybody to come and help him [Jantjies] out," Van Straaten said.
"Elton is a very talented player and I'm sure we can get him right in a very short space of time, and he's been kicking the ball so well out of hand, but as soon as it goes on the ground onto the kicking tee he's struggled.
"Hopefully I can help with that on Thursday and Friday, but with all his talent I'm sure we can get him back up to par quickly."
The kicking ace is excited about the prospect of a new challenge to add to his growing portfolio of world class kickers he is currently working with that includes the likes of James O'Connor (Western Force), Quade Cooper (Reds) and Pat Lambie (Sharks).
The beauty of his specialisation is that Van Straaten can work with a number players remotely and won't have to concentrate on the Lions players alone.
"I'm on a consultancy basis with all the kickers for Australia, and exactly the same with the Sharks working with Pat Lambie and Jacques-Louis Potgieter," he explained.
"I've also started now working with the guys at Griquas and by doing so much of analysis via the internet it's easy to keep in contact with players from all over."
Reds ace Quade Cooper is the next client on Van Straaten's rosta, and the 23-year-old told rugby365.com that he'll be all ears during the session in Cape Town on Wednesday.
"It's always good kicking with Braam and he is one of the best kickers to have played the game," Cooper said.
"I'll look to get as many tips off him as I can and just be like a sponge and absorb everything."
