Initially I thought that, but it was just a get off me action. Not really a punch. Had no problems. Cowan is known to be a dickwad when the verbal occurred it's just one of those perks as being captain. You aren't gonna yellow card a captain for backchat nor dissent.
As you say Cowans got a history and as such he should be on a shorter rope. There was no way that it was a push. It was a haymaker aimed for the Canes players head. The fact that it missed and hit him on the shoulder shouldn't be an excuse.

So what? It's not soccer.

Hoiles very, very dumb. How many tackles did Mr Walsh miss? How many passes did he drop?

Look at the scoreboard.

Munro has been the best S14 ref this year by miles. Why he's not favoured by the appointments people mystifies me. I haven't seen the H/H game tonight yet, I have to wait for the replay, but I'll lay odds he was good.

Walsh needed to card one player from each front row to make a point. He had any number of choices for candidates, but Baxter and Alexander probably deserved it most for packing too low and other sundry misbehaviour. That I think would have brought people to their senses.

Walsh's general reffing was poor, but I agreed with his ruling on the "no try". Too many other mistakes however.

Hoiles was too emotionally involved to read the game properly and the end result was that each rubbed each other up the wrong way, which made the match even worse as a spectacle. Not one of the great captain's performances. He needed to listen more and try to work with Walsh rather than arguing.

So are we saying Walsh was...

A. crap, but ultimately didn't influence the result

B. crap, and he inadvertently influenced the result

C. crap, and he deliberatly favoured the Waratahs, thereby influencing the result

D. actually pretty good - it was the teams that were crap

Anyone hear what Vinnie Munro said to Jimmy Cowan when he was venting his anger, that's classy reffing.

i missed it, quote chief?

attempt at paraphrasing, but it was something like:

i'll look for it in the future, but if you speak to me like that again you'll be having a seat and i don't yet know what the card color will be.

very well played with cowan since can be pretty petulant

I am sure that packing too low isn't an infringement. That is a tactic to get an advantage on the other scrum. I the opposition are packing to low for you then you shouldn't be on the field.

:nta: you get refs in every second game wanting sides to pack higher, pack closer etc etc

If both sides are trying to pack too low it makes the scrum unstable, the instability was the problem.

And it also results in random decisions about who has their shoulders lower than their hips (or "hinging" as it is now known in some circles).

The problem is, if like Dan Palmer or Benn Robinson you pack extremely fucking low, and the other guy (e.g. Cheetahs' THP) is a big fat lazy bloke, then he's going to come down on top of your shoulders. If you can't hold him up, because the ref isn't down at your level, he'll make a judgement call about who had their shoulders too low, or reset the scrum. In those cases, you can easily lose because a lot of refs simply don't understand the mechanics involved, only that they've got a safety brief on this area of the game.

Which is why Phil Waugh should stop going for endless scrums. You're going to lose one eventually.

Just one of those night, though, they'll all be less crap next week.

Whilst Walsh had an off game, he also had two assistant refs that didnt seem to do him any favours. Young Nathan is also quite well known for easily getting the shits and Mr Leckie seemed almost anonymous.

Mrs Riddler was happy though - she loves Stevie boy and he was doing his warm up thing before the game just in front of us. A happy Mrs Riddler makes for a happy Riddler :)

The reason Baxter drops so many scrums is his shoulders are too low compared to his hips. The only way to go is down. I'm supprised no one has told him to drop his hips/knees an inch.

I have watched about ten S14 games in the last two months with a Qlander who spends the whole 80 minutes screaming at the referee. He was apoplectic after last night's game, insisting that Walsh had cost the Brumby Foals the game. I contended that it is very rare for a referee to determine the result of a game. He then shouted at me that the referee determines the result of EVERY game. I replied that if that was so, the Reds' seven wins this year must have all come from the referee. He got very, very angry. Strange absence of logic in his stance.

A day behind the BBQ at Chatswood Oval, with accompanying beverages, and then a few more at the footy makes a fun day but not necessarily one with a happy ending ::)
