Opta Stats have just sent out their match packs and they provide at least one additional stat I didn't have previously - dominant tackles.

So I have added this to the Disrupter category as a dominant hit can disrupt the flow of attack. Thus the new Top 5s are:

Backs

1 Filipo Daugunu @ 7.78 (meaning he did one of the above things every 7.78 mins)
2 Corey Toole @ 8.89
3 Toni Pulu @ 9.43
4 Max Jorgensen & Hamish Stewart @ 11.43

So no real change other than Filipo's numbers.

Forwards though:

1 Charlie Gamble @ 11.40
2 Tom Lamber @ 14.75
3 Josh Canham, Rob Valetini & Fraser McReight @ 16.00

Main changes are the emergence of Valetini and McReight on the back of some big hits.

And a new category - Defensive Kings. Basically the number of minutes per tackles plus dominant tackles plus the number of turnovers won all multiplied by the tackle success rate:

Backs:

1 Carter Gordon @ 6.04 (basically just 15 tackles at his 88.24% success rate across his 80 minutes- no dominant tackles and no turnovers won)
2 Filipo Daugunu @ 8.18
3 Nick Jooste @ 8.89
4 Hamish Stewart & Hunter Paisami @ 10.00

Forwards:

1 Charlie Gamble @ 4.38 (defensive play every 4.38 minutes)

Interesting that the dominant backs are largely wingers.

Good to see Gordon not shying away from the tough stuff.

Super Rugby Pacific ball-in-play time up nearly two minutes on last year

The move to speed up Super Rugby Pacific and increase the amount of ball-in-play time is off to a promising start, with the Round 1 numbers now confirmed to have been an improvement on those from 2022.

According to Oval Insights, the average ball in play for Round 1 was 1:54 longer than that of the 2022 season. The mean for 2023 was 31.21 compared to 29.27 last year.

The Crusaders-Chiefs game topped the Round 1 fixtures with a ball-in-play time of 38.15, while the Waratahs-Brumbies contest in Sydney was at the other end of the scale at 26.29. Still, that figure on Friday night in Sydney was a whopping 4:32 improvement on the lowest game from Round 1 in 2022.

Looks like the Reds have been actively pushing for "Heineken Cup" style competition with Japan and at least the rest of the Australian sides are in support:
While a World Club Challenge has already been mooted – and is being considered every three or four years – it can be revealed the Queensland Reds are driving support to follow the hugely successful Heineken Cup and Challenge Cup models in Europe.

The proposed model would see a finals weekend involving the highest ranked Super Rugby and Japanese League One teams in the Championship Cup and Challenge Cup play on one weekend, before the winner of the Championship Cup takes on the winner of the Northern Hemisphere’s Heineken Cup in a neutral location.

All five Australian Super Rugby franchises have seen the proposed model and there is broad support for the concept.

Exciting concept, but played somewhat concurrently with the super season would likely require bigger squads, so it'd need to coincide with a cash injection from the start. Lots of potential for it to pay off down the road though. Dovetails nicely with the potential move to bring Japan into the rugby championship too.

Love the idea. More footy = better player development. You're right about the squad size and looking at the current depth in certain positions across a number of franchises it would be a stretch that needs to be addressed.

I've always loved the idea of a Club World Cup that could be run every 4 years in between Rugby World Cups. Gives a big spectacle every 2 years for Rugby. Would take some arranging and negotiations as I imagine the best way to get it done is to not have the same level of international season in that year. I'd say keep your local (6 Nations, Rugby Championship) and drop the tour to give space.

With him, Atko, and GeeRob leading the charge, it really feels as there's some momentum building on the media front - not just big stories (i.e. Eddie) getting coverage once or twice per month.

The Canberra Times is doing more than a little bit too. A four page lift out on the season coming up with coverage of all teams. Another four pages of stories and previews leading into Round 1, every day another story about goings on at the Brumbies or featuring a specific player. Have had articles on Nick Frost and Nic White this week. Etc, etc.

Now really is the time they need to be pushing things in the media.

NRL started this week and AFL soon to come.

Get some market share early and hopefully the articles/competition is well received, and they keep that real estate.
