How the fuck is Fines not starting for the Force?
If Simpson was hanging around it might make sense, but given he's one and done it's just insane. Whichever way you cut it's going to be a poor year for them, better to actually work on building your half up for the future.

AU conference ladder

Brumbies 17 points (4 games)
Rebels 9 points (3 games)
Reds 7 points (4 games)
Forces 4 points (2 games)
Tahs 3 points (3 games)

I am pretty sure these numbers are correct, obviously the ladder is skewed due to uneven number of games

This comp is a joke. Glad we've signed up to it forever.

From a QLD perspective, I’m genuinely worried about how the Reds can regain relevance in Brisbane. The Broncos and Dolphins are pulling major crowds in QLD, the Lions are still a premiership contender team for the next few years.

Club rugby in Brisbane is keeping blokes in the game, not a desire to play for the Reds.

Lions premiership contender? Is this a troll account? They suck they are about as likely to win at the MCG as the Wallabies are to win at Eden Park

My point is they’re not going to blow up this core of players in the next few years. Whether or not they’ll legitimately win a premiership doesn’t matter (and I don’t follow close enough to know properly) but they are far more popular and relevant in Brisbane than the Reds at present.

As soon as work starts on the Gabba the Lions will be done. Hosting them out of a 10k stadium on the outskirts of the city with the big games at the Gold Coast will hurt them massively.

Plus with their shocking away record losing their home ground advantage at the Gabba will see them turn to shit on field

I agree, you can’t have a comp where some teams have close to double the budget of others
A hell of a lot of comps have teams with incerdibly different budgets. Not sure who has budgets double than other teams, but maybe the ones who have a smaller budget need to work harder at getting money? EPL, NBA etc etc all have teams with bigger budgets, as I bet do the NRL etc, but they all seem to have comps!

Yeah and look how fucking boring soccer is.

One thing that makes the AFL good to watch is the equalisation. As a fan of a big club in the AFL equalisation hurts my team but you can see the benefit to the competition.

All the NZ clubs get far more funding and have far bigger budgets

I mean going off the EPL's TV deal and incredible attendance you're clearly in the minority on this one.

It's just a different culture in football where winning the comp isn't the only thing to play for; qualifying for Europe, avoiding relegation or even just beating the big rich clubs are all achievements that mean something.

Yeah a 20 team comp where 15 teams will never have a hope of winning

I think the multi-facet aspect of football helps drive attention. Relegation, multiple trophies, champ league qualification etc. means teams are consistently playing for something relevant. Are stories are consistently available.

In my mind it needs to be extreme equalization rules like AFL, NBA, NFL, etc. have or the teams need to be in that multifaceted system like football. Unfortunately we are currently involved in a system with very little equalization and there is very little to play for outside the 1 trophy each year. For instance I don’t think there would be as many complaints about the competition if the Aussie teams were still in realistic contention for another trophy.

How are budgets for clubs ever equal in AFL or any sport, are you genuinely saying teams with better sponsors or more members etc don't have a more money then smaller clubs , I would be very surprised if that is case, do they remove their earnings . I know you have salary cap etc, but how do you stop better run clubs having more money?

Other question is, do Brumbies have a bigger budget than other Aussie teams, or are they just better run/coached and develop players better? Because they seem to be almost unbeatable by other Aus teams at moment.

And I will add I have no idea what any super club's budget is.

AFL has both a playing and off field salary cap. They found clubs were pumping so much money into non salary things to attract players that the competition started to become distorted. They even apply a cost of living tax by providing fractionally more money to the Swans because of the greater expense to live in Sydney. Poor performing teams will be allocated a priority draft pick, which is often controversial.

They are on the extreme side of things with equalization but it works.

NBA allows teams to spend over the cap, but it’s counted as luxury tax where every dollar spent over is charged at double (not sure of the exact figures). This money spent over the cap is then redistributed to the other clubs. They also prevent max salary been spent from a player moving to another team, the highest possible salary can only be offered to existing players. Then there is the draft, etc. it’s really fascinating but drives conversation points.

NFL prevents teams from training as a group outside the times that they allow. Players aren’t allowed to even enter a building affiliated with the club unless approved by the league.

The Aus teams have same cap to each spend on the playing budget, but the RA top ups are where it distorts things. You could have a rough guess to who receives more or less from RA, but there isn’t any real information out there to say what the differences are.
