If the mail is true then it is classic Eddie challenging these blokes. Particularly Hooper, Vuni and Hodge imo.

If Hooper comes out and kills it I reckon you can pretty much guarantee he will be in Eddie's 23.

Vuni will have to show a huge amount of improvement off the ball. Would he be there if Petaia and Kellaway were available.? Let's see how he goes. Perfect opportunity to see what he has got.

Hodge I see as a bit of a challenge as well, step up and you'll firm for the 23 jersey. Wouldn't be my pick in a 23 but I can see the utility factor for a WC.
Hodge is a solid, really reliable unit who can truck it up, kick the shit out of it and make his tackles.

Vuni, despite appearing disinterested most of the time, gets the ball over the line

After a 'mare in the semi-final, Tom Wright is one bad game in Gold away from the fans properly writing him off for international duties. So my prediction is that he'll absolutely fucking kill it with a sensational solo try to keep the merry-go-round of discussion turning without any definitive conclusions.

Think Holloway is hard done by here at 6 - won the most line outs in the whole of Super Rugby and stole the most line outs in Super Rugby, not to mention his benefits with his hands and reliable carrying against a big pack
He didn't cover himself in glory for the Wallabies last year

We haven't had a #6 who has for a very long time, Fardy was probably the most recent. The issue is that the omission of a lineout specialist for a player who the Brumbies didn't even use in the lineout in the final leaves us a bit thin in that department.

Tom Hooper has always been a lock up until recently, and Frost has shown every time at test level he is more than up to whatever they ask of him

Slipper injured his knee didn't he? Hopefully its just from a knock or something innocuous and the soft tissue injuries of the last few years do not continue.

Valetini looks like a prototypical test 6 - will he get a run there this year?

I'm not being critical of either, it's the apparent complete omission of Holloway from even the bench that leaves us a bit undermanned in the lineout department. If Doran's lineup is correct Frost is the only notable lineout target in the starting side, he is relatively inexperienced at this level and is presumably going to be tasked with also running the lineout.

Frost and Tom Hooper - Hooper is historically a lineout jumping lock.

Frost went alright on the spring tour...

  • First in minutes played (320), and the only tight forward to play every minute of every match he started.
  • First in penalties given up, with one solitary penalty conceded over four matches.
  • First in lineout takes (23) and steals (2) while securing 50% of Australia’s own throw.
  • First in the number of ruck attendances as one of the first three cleanout supports – 23 more than the next man.
  • First in ball-carries made (29) and tackles completed (42).

Thought Eddie’s comments to the SMH were interesting about playing one of Vunivalu and Marky Mark (Nawaqanitawase) (likely Suli) and due to the turn around other likely to get a shot next week against Argentina. Will be interesting to see how Kellaway comes into the mix next week and if he gets the nod at 15 before we put our best possible team (injuries permitting) on the field for the All Blacks

I feel like a lone voice in the wilderness but I've been saying, both here and in the Wallabies 2023 thread, since the squad was announced that Eddie had fucked up his prop selections. He was always one short and it pleases me no end to see that he has finally capitulated and called on another. Not that I had one supportive comment on these threads either.

To be fair, Eddie took six props with him which is the most you would expect...

The risk was taking two props who they were hoping to be fit in time for the match.

Slim, in what world really is it fair to take injured players and have to rely on them gaining sufficient fitness to play if circumstances require. Might get away with it with a couple of wingers, though even that would be less than satisfactory, but insane to think you'd get away with it with rugby props.
