Trying to build some depth in a position that has been a big problem for the Wallabies for a number of years is hardly one of the mind numbing selections is it?

Arnold can't call lineouts, it's going to mean he misses selection sometimes.

I'm not a fan of the level of rotation in the locks either, but if I play devils advocate for a minute -
- lock is arguably the position where we have complained the most consistently that our available options have been short of the standard of our key opposition
- Cheika has stated publicly that he wants impact, effectiveness AND work rate from his locks
- Coleman is delivering that and is now consistently picked
- None if the others have delivered consistently, so Cheika is rotating them. He has publicly explained the previous dropping of Simmons on the basis of impact and the dropping of Arnold on the basis of consistency/workrate. I think most on here would generally agree with those criticisms, to varying degrees.
- he has also bought other options into the equation and given them opportunities to stake their claim

To be honest, my biggest issue with it is the apparent inconsistency with his approach to other positions. Maybe he is genuinely happy with the options in other positions or, more likely in my mind, he simply doesn't feel that alternative options are there and so is prepared to persist with the incumbent.

One thing I would say is that Simmons super rugby form was poor - he
is pretty lucky to have got a recall. But I thought his test form this year had been much better. His test against Argentina was very good and I do recall that included some strong carries and physicality at the breakdown - an area of his game which Cheika said he needed to work on. So maybe Cheika's approach is producing some level of improvement.

And yet, Cheika evidently still wants more with his demotion to the bench, or
feels Rodda is closer to the mark he wants, or maybe both.

Cheika clearly will pick and stick - one of the locks just needs to demand that spot.

Seems to me TSR that your 'devil's advocate' position is pretty on point about just about everything. Either he's happy (Folau, TK, Beale, Coleman, Hooper), he has no other options (Foley, Hanigan/Dempsey) or he's rotating regularly.

2 players competing for 1 spot is not competing, Moore is retiring so Uelese is backup to TPN, not competing for jersey 2, same for Kepu and AAA, same for 13. Guys, to compete means that a minimum of 4 players are vying for ONE SPOT. wing is the only position where there is atleast 5 players vying for 1 spot, i.e Hodge, Marika, Henry, DHP, Rona, Izaia, Sefa are teh ones vying for 2 spots, thats 7 players for 2 spots, 5 for now due to the injury to DHP and sefa but come the 2019RWC, it will get higher, its the only position with actual competition, everything else is sealed with the incumbents there. pretty sure there was a battle for 12 once but since Beale came back, that battle has ended, now everyone like meakes, hodge and Kerevi are somewhat competing for a place on the bench or backup

Latu and Ready will also be competing for a hooking spot. Hunt will be back to challenge Beale at 12 who will then challenge Folau at 15 along with DHP. The only spot where there is no competition is at 10 along with a lack of good alternatives at 6. Both of these are due to viable alternatives having not been selected in the squad. With Pocock back it will liven things up in the back row. but we need to look at a couple of genuine 6-8s. Cheika is developing legitimate depth, you have to give him that at least.

Dempsey doesn't balance that back row. A big combative unit needs to be there for it to work. Tui would have been the option I would have gone for.

You'll get that in the second half. Not a ridiculous strategy to let them tire a bit before his debut IMO, especially at altitude.

I'm not particularly fond of the constant lock rotations... particularly Arnold being dumped again.

Of course you wouldn't - he's a Brumby

Bloke still hasn't done enough to cement the other lock spot (with Coleman).

Simmons has played well recently (and better than Arnold),

Maybe Rodda will take his opportunity.

If he can't call lineouts, then I see that as a failure of the coaches. Surely wouldn't take much just to get him up to speed. I see that his twin Richie calls the lineouts at times for the Spirit and he's not been around as long as Rory.

I doubt it's Arnold's ability, or apparent lack thereof, to call line outs which is a significant problem. He is not our best lineout exponent, but from my viewing he is proficient.

Personally I would have liked to see Arnold & Coleman given a few successive starts together at least. But Arnold's involvement can drift in and out, which is the reason Cheika nominated for leaving him out. I'd assume that is the core issue.

10-13 to the Wallabies. Really seem like Aus are more threatening. Hopefully they can hold onto the ball. Also Foley needs to learn to kick the ball out.

It looked worse live........ I thought he was gone for sure.........

But he was clearly trying to grab the shirt, missed and got the ponytail instead.........

Lucky not to be yellow carded, but same for Etsebeth for the retaliation.

He had multiple chances to release, using a point of action well above the neck line to pivot the guys body into the ground. Pretty lucky result I think

Man he had him by the collar and gave his lil man bun a bit of a tug when his grip slipped. Not a yellow.
