What I tell parents who whinge about the referees performance at Junior Jarse games, is to do the referee course and prove that they can do better, when they prove that they should then do the referee coach course so they are qualified to help the "useless cheating bastard" to be less useless, less blind, less of a bastard.

Only two have taken me up on the offer, and both of those have become quite good referees, and are much better spectators.

The majority of our referees are volunteers. Without referees we do not have a game. Professional referees are few and far between, and they all started out as village park volunteers.

Good response.
I tell people that most refs know 99% of the laws off the top of their head and the other 1% are the ones that you hardly ever see......If you accept that they know the laws then the reason they dont penalise the infringements must have something to do with what they do and don't see. Since no one else in the ground occupies the same position as a ref we are looking at from different angles and on TV from several different angles in slow mo.
It like the difference between a question of law, in the law, and a question of fact. The jury finds the facts and, unless perverse, those findings are above challenge.
At a RWC 1/4 final there is the additional complication of no ref (hopefully) wanting to spoil the show: as someone pointed out on here, BL could have just blown the whistle all day and ruined the game that way.

Over the next two years he is not allowed to be critical of the IRB or of referees, if he does then he is suspended automatically for six months.

NO, the article is not about Andre Watson
And its a bit of a slap with a wet lettuce

Finally, someone at the judiciary uses their head. The player gets to continue his career but with a huge incentive not to get on twitter. He also has to learn what it is like to be a referee, something that will no doubt give him a different perspective. The ruling takes all the heat out of the situation and hopefully quells the "we was robbed" talk in the islands by not making a martyr out of the player. Back to the rugby.

Hold on - "The ruling takes all the heat out of the situation and hopefully quells the "we was robbed" talk in the islands by not making a martyr out of .....(a) South African Rugby (b) Andre Watson (c) Alain Roland.
To get the heat out of the issue to which this thread is addressed AW needs to be sanction in a similarly appropriate way: i suggest being forced to watch his performance at the 2003 RWC Final until he confesses that everyone makes mistakes

Fuimaono-Sapolu made a controversial Twitter post linking the scheduling of the World Cup to slavery, the holocaust and apartheid, after Samoa had three days to prepare for their match against Wales, while Wales had a week to prepare.

In under 140 characters? Must be some quote!

As if this isn't putting immense pressure on Joubert. It will be a miracle if he refs Pocock fairly tonight. I thought refs were a band of brothers? This World Cup has been an extremely poor advertisement for the game. Sadly.

Can I bring up my pet argument for having 2 refs? After teething problems are overcome I'm sure it would be the superior model. Look at Rugby league.

I think it will be advantage to us if the breakdown is refereed fairly. We all know Richie likes to have a quick nap on the wrong side of the ruck or hold players off the ball. Bam tends to only get pinged for not realising the tackler before pilfering. That said, I don't want to see Simmons try to pull any of that holding the player off the ball shit he's been doing lately.

I love this clip. Frolicking dolphins in the ruck.

That's a lovely swan dive from Pierre Spies. Very graceful.

You could almost get him for "no arms"

The only reason BL was jusitifed for not penalising him was that it was so ineffective that it had zero impact on the game: he cold not have drawn more attention to himself if he had done it from the high board at the olympics

Love that clip Reg, because almost every single person is doing something illegal. Moore and Vicks tackle the Bok player and just lie there like they have been shot. The two Bok cleanout men just hurl themselves at Pocock, who is attempting the steal whilst not supporting his own weight.

Actually I think Bryce may have been right not to blow anything!
