Ah. SARU strikes again.

According to the Volksblad news paper SARU made all sorts of promises for Frans to return to SA and they are not delivering.

If that is true, he has my support to walk away.

Sounds like a prima donna type performance. If it's as you say, the SARU's mistake was agreeing to a player's terms rather than not meeting them.

Speaking as a Wallabies fan who suffered through the bad behaviour of young Australian players given preferential treatment.

Tex I agree with you. No space for Prima Donnas for me either but if SARU agreed terms with him and they are not delivering then what should he do?

This is SARU. They have a history of reneging on player deals and have even gone into test seasons with the players having no contracts.

That is why I would give Steyn the benefit of the doubt until we know the full story.

I can only imagine what it must be like to try and negotiate with SARU and then after the fact chase them to deliver.

Frans Steyn and the South African Rugby Union have thrown a veil of secrecy over the subject, but money might be at the centre of the World Cup winner's gladiatorial walk-out on the Springbok team.

In a carefully worded statement SARU said Steyn was released from the Bok squad "at his own request".

And while neither Steyn, nor SARU would divulge any reasons - in fact Steyn asked for privacy at this time, according to the statement - rugby365 is aware that there has been ongoing discussions between the player and SARU over his contract.

These negotiations have been of a very acrimonious nature and reportedly relates to promises made by SARU when the utility back returned to South Africa from France.

While the media release issued late on Tuesday dropped subtle hints, it stops short of confirming that the contractual stand-off is indeed at the centre of the controversy.

According to the statement Steyn said: "The environment in the Springbok squad is fantastic and I would like to state categorically that my relationship with Heyneke Meyer, the rest of the management and my teammates is very good."

That can only mean one thing, his recent discussions with SARU did not go according to plan and may well have added fuel to the fire.

Other hints in the media release that suggest the problem relates to his 'discussions' with SARU van be found in this paragraph: "Steyn - who is expected to take up a contract in Japan at the end of Super Rugby Series - said that he wished for time to reflect on his Springbok future. He indicated he would be available for the Sharks once the June internationals are completed."

SARU Chief Executive Jurie Roux also said that he spoke to Steyn "at length".

Making it clear that Steyn has NOT retired from international rugby, Roux said the player asked for some time "to consider his international playing future".

Whatever happened between Steyn and SARU, a player walking out on the Bok team suggest the underlying issue may have been a boil waiting to burst.

All sounds a bit messy. I hope they sort it out before 2015. I'd like to see Steyn play in the WC.

Honestly never have, think he's overrated. There's always been this hype around him which I think just comes from the 50m drop goals and 60m place kicks but other that I find him one-dimensional and solid but nothing more.

your general comments on all things South Africa make me think you either pay preciously little attention or you have a real chip on your shoulder when it comes to Saffers. I doubt I have ever seen you have anything good to say.

Steyn's value goes way beyond drop goals, for those who care and more importantly those that matter.

The latest story is that his knees are stuffed, Meyer wanted to play him for Wales and he has withdrawn because he wants to rest.

Who knows what is true.

It sounds like he will be available next year for the whole year according to some news reports.

Anyway Jan Serfontein will start on Saturday which I am happy about.

Bok team announced:

Springboks – 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Cornal Hendricks, 13 JP Pietersen, 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Victor Matfield (c), 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Gurthro Steenkamp.
Subs: 16 Schalk Brits, 17 Beast Mtawarira, 18 Coenie Oosthuizen, 19 Lood de Jager, 20 Schalk Burger, 21 Ruan Pienaar, 22 Johan Goosen, 23 Lwazi Mvovo.

Steenkamp starts at LH prop. Heyneke Meyer msut have seen something other than the big fat guy who could barely run last week. Wow.

M Steyn. Meh. Don't get Hendricks starting ahead of Mvovo. Don't get that at all. Lood de Jager from Cheetahs debuts off the bench. Good luck to the young fella. Great prospect.

Schalk Burger. Meh. Would have Juan Smith or Aussie Potgieter before him any day.

Back the the future, Mark 5.

Don't rate him?

I know you asked Qwerty and not me, but I reckon Frans is one of the more overrated players in the game. He's got bags of talent and could be anything at the top level but if anything I think he's underachieved in test footy. Now that might sound like strange criticism of a bloke with RWC winners medal, but on talent alone I reckon he could have been the best back in world rugby. He can tackle, has a great boot, great hands, runs good lines but I've seldom seen him put it all together in a total performance and definitely not across a season.

Seriously he's good enough to be in an all time Bok XV, but I don't think that's how we'll be talking about him at the end of his career. I think he could get more out himself.

Yes well it appears Meyer would prefer to bring back tried and tested boks rather than blood new players so i expect he'll just walk back into the side when he wants to.

That comments a bit tongue and cheek but also true. Amazing to think there is still 10 of the 22 players from the 2007 Boks team that played in the world cup 2007 final still in the selection frame for the boks.

I always found Steyn one of the more impressive Bok backline players. Versatile, an unmatched boot and very physical. I think he has one more world cup in him for sure.

Truth in that.

There's been lots of stop start to his career and I think that is partly why he hasn't fulfilled potential.

Early in his career he wanted to play 10. Jake White played him there a couple of times and he was poor. He then seemed to realise that it's not his position. Every time he hits form he seems to get injured. He was superb early in the World Cup. Then he got injured. Then last year he really started to look good. Injured again.

Strikes me as a bit of a troubled individual. Seems to get down on himself quite easily.

Now he is off to Japan and rejoins the Sharks early next year. This after the whole issue seems to be that he is playing through injury.

He, his management, and SARU have not managed his career ell, or at all for that matter.

Steyn is a spoiled brat, time for Saru to tell him to vokof from where he comes from. He always have this look in his baby face. Shame on Bok rugby when players start demanding rights and kak. What about the jersey, and specially team spirit, Hell to wait before a test to start this tantrums. Fire the spoiled brat forever.

Meyer team look like a Bok old age home combine with Blue Bulls & chicken runners XV. Once he is finish as the Bok coach Bok rugby will be into the ground. He set this vicious chicken running cycle which obvious is busy killing our game.
