You have a commendable faith in human nature, Hawko. It does you credit.

Someone of more cynical bent might have argued that there should have been at least one of the coaching/management team sober enough on Saturday morning to have considered the national team's interest and notified his club that the player was released from the half time curfew.

I agree Bruce, however why didn't the player or the club ring someone & request a "release from curfew"
Or just ignore the instruction as the Tahs season had already concluded?

Randwick's half million dollar loss in 2010 is truly disturbing. Yet more evidence that our sport is in crisis. As I understand it the ARU is losing money, the Waratahs are losing money and one of our most successful and iconic clubs is haemorrhaging at a rate that must threaten its continuance as a major competitive force.

I think it's time that we all recognised that there are critical issues to be addressed and stopped assuming that those in positions of power and responsibility know what they are doing and can be trusted to advance the sport of rugby. We are not advancing; we are slipping behind.

The club rugby issue could be resolved if the Shute Shield returned to what it should be an amateur competition. How anybody thinks clubs should be paying players to compete in a competition that attracts friends and relatives to the game and pays the ABC to televise is beyond me. There is an absolute false economy in play here and not only at Randwick. The 12 clubs should all agree a policy of non payment.

Maybe it wouldn't have to be amatuer if the blokes at the top got off their behinds and started promoting the game in the media and had more games televised on free to air tv. Maybe they could learn from the AFL who are looking to increase their junior base rather than decrease it.

This is where Sydney Uni have an advantage they don't pay for the upkeep of things like fields(hiring), and maintenance of facilities etc. Put this up with a very wealthy foundation of which the Interest is spent it's fairly well easy at the top.

No one seems accountable. Clubs either don't meet their obligations or have NSW Rugby provide a handout. Super teams run to the ARU for handouts. The ARU add another test or Baa Baas game to the season. People at the top only care about the revenue generators, Tests and Super Rugby.

I had this long winded response to the non committment of funds to club rugby but my son deleted it. Anyway it went something like this. It really annoys me that whenever I log onto this sit that the majority would rathervisit the grassroots section and talk about the standout No7 in the 16as GPS comp than the Shute Shield. The powers that be know this so untill the so called fans actually go to a game like I do every Saturday then they should shutup and realise they are part of the problem not the solution. The Waratahs, Force, Rebels and Brumbies demonstrated successfully that the immediate future is to successfully harness the talent of successful club players not schoolboy reps who are 19 or 20.
Before someone writes me off I am well aware of the ages of all players in the Australian S15 franchises.

Perhaps all clubs should agree not to pay contracted Super 15 and Wallabies players. If these players are receiving an income from NSWRU and/or ARU why should clubs "top them up"?

The game will never go back to pure amateurism but some common sense must prevail....perhaps this will happen after a few more clubs go broke!!

Couldn't agree more!!
rumours doing the rounds are that two former league stars now at the Rebels will play this weekend.............and every club game they play they'll earn 4K a match.......if it's true, and that money is being thrown around, then they'd better prepare for a 3 team comp!!!

it has been a 3 team comp since 1998. Only Uni, Eastwood and Randwick have won the comp. Good luck to players who can get a club to shell out this amount of money.
