Clubs should recognise the amount they have to spend on players each season though. So if a club believes they can spend 4 k on a player per match and break even fair enough. But unfortunetly some club administrator's don't recognise when the finances are starting to slip well enough.

Rats 15 Manly 32

The Rats forwards were mongrelled by the Manly pack and especially in the scrums. The poor old Rats don't have a decent scrummaging prop in the whole club and it showed. IIRR 3 of Manly's 4 tries happened after turning down penalties and going for the scrum.

It was like watching the Wallabies against England this time last year – or your kids playing on the motorway – something bad was going to happen at scrum time.

Some other thoughts:

• With all their good forwards and good ball, you would think that Manly would be beating teams by plenty but they don't. In this game they let the Rats come back until they were just 6 behind . They weren't impressive in the 2nd half which was “only” 8-11 to them.

• It was interesting to watch Danny Cipriani playing at my home ground. Much of the ball he received was low grade but most of the time he did well with it and some his phone booth off-loading was magician like. He also did some chips that were actually retrieved by a Rat.

• He would have liked the ball that 10. Ben Seymour received from his Manly pack. 20 y.o. Ben is developing nicely and would be in the frame for one of the Tahs rookie contracts next year. His pass is very good but he has to take the ball to the line more and use his boot a bit to keep outside defenders back. Early days though for this good young player.

• Well done to the Rat's crowd for their many handy hints to one of their favourite refs, Angus Gardner. What a pity his pal, Brett Sheehan, was not on hand to show his appreciation of his skill. Sheeno was probably not allowed to play if he was fit, just as Pat McCabe was not given permission to play. Gerrard was only allowed 30 mins by the ARU and he came on after oranges. There was no sign of Cowan either.

• And hey – you Manly fans, why boo when the ground announcer was trying to gee up the home crowd? [And I'm looking at you lily.]

• The funniest part of the day was when the teams came off at oranges. The Rats went back through their tunnel, as did Manly through theirs, but Cipriani headed off to the Manly exit and had to make a last second detour. Well, I thought it was funny.

Summary: Manly were far to good in the forwards but should have won by more.

Solid crowd at Rat Park and the hill was in full swing.
True the rats props were out of their depth like the 1st rd at Manly Oval, with Salesi Manu out again and Cowan not playing it was 1st grade props v 2nds and manly 1sts include brumby Jono Owen.

Thought the ball that Cipriani got was pretty good from phase play and line outs and not sure the rats completed a scrum on their feed.
Agree that Cipriani"s passing was a class above most who have played at rat park in recent years.
Amazing that Sheehan and Gerrard were held back by the ARU, as it appears most on GGR dont rate them for World Cup squad(not sure anyones mentioned Sheehan)
Gerrard looked bigger than 2 years ago, when i last saw him from the sideline, and must dwarf most potential Wallaby backs this year!

it has been a 3 team comp since 1998. Only Uni, Eastwood and Randwick have won the comp. Good luck to players who can get a club to shell out this amount of money.
Keithy are you sure about what you just posted? I only ask because your wrong.

Manly won in '97 lily. I haven't looked, but who, apart from those three, has won since then?

Gordon won in 1998 and on that subject I felt they were sloppy in their win today, could be a win on the cards for Warringah next week.

It's funny how Dave Hart left Manly to get some first grade time in Warringah, yet when he goes on for warringah he gets dominated in the scrum

How about Eastwood yesterday in the ABC game. They just bashed the students time and time again. Uni seemed to have no answer and their backs hardly even touched the ball, meanwhile the eastwood backs looked electric when they did have the ball.
Bruce is it true recent Super 15 props Paddy Ryan and Jerry Y were playing 2nd grade? and if so why would that be? I would imagine they would destroy 2nd grade scrums with their recent experience i rate them both from what i have seen

Just read other thread, so Jerry Y and Paddy Ryan did play 2nd grade. Seems very strange you go from Starting Super Rugby games to 2nd Grade

What should he have done, stayed at Manly and played 2nds and 3rds. If he wants to develop his game and backs himself to have a dig in 1's then good luck to him.
I didn't notice him come on, if he did there was no change to the result of the scrums.

Stayed at Manly and tried to develop there, no doubt if he was up to first grade Tim Lane would put him on, just look at all the youngsters that have been given opportunities to play because they have heart and willing to work.

You were probably the only one at Rat Park that didn't notice him on, let alone the entire hill bantering him

The Heart Foundation might not be up to 1's standard but he is a guy who left Manly to go to the dark side. That showed courage. He wanted to be tested against the best and good luck to him and his fellow SPC expat and Manly refo.

Does this have anything to do with the points limit for team selection? Though I remember Bruce waxing lyrical about the form of Adey King so maybe its just Uni preference.

as a supporter of club rugby who couldn't get out to watch his team today, why can't i get scores anywhere?? it's midnight on a saturday and this forum hasn't got scores, more importantly the nsw website doesn't either. it's a joke, much like the fact we might have to sit through 2012 with d.mumm as skipper. piss off uni.
The Shute Shield scores were on the front page of this site—the blog, not the forum—at 5:17pm that Saturday. Yesterday's scores went up at 6:06pm. Look for the third box down on the right side titled 'Latest results'.

You wonder why these boys persist at Uni. A couple of clubs down the M4 would appreciate their talents.

A quick wiki check states Gordon in 1998 and Easts in 2003.

That's right Sydney rugby ran two comps. East and Warringah have won the first round comps but Uni, Eastwood and Randwick have won the second round comp. I was reading the rugby news website.
