Can someone please explain how the NSWRU allocates the grounds for the finals.

I am absolutely livid that Souths have to play University at University Oval this Sunday.

We finished higher than the bloody Students and we play this weekend's preliminary final at Uni Oval.

It really should've been played at Concord Oval or even at Forshaw Park where we got a huge crowd for the game last weekend.

This seems to be a premeditated plan to ensure University and their vast array of rep stars win the Shute Shield again.

It's a disgrace.

It does seem pretty odd to me. It has happened in past years too, so is a bit random. I guess trying to plan finals venues in advance (by tender) will have this weakness, but I would be aggrieved too.

Should be a good game at against Eastwood this week.

RANDWICK will field one of their strongest sides in years for their Shute Shield semi-final against Eastwood, with four top-tier Wallabies returning to their squad, including captain Rocky Elsom.

Second-rower Mark Chisholm, utility back Kurtley Beale and winger Drew Mitchell are also expected to return for the Gallopping Greens for their game on Saturday at Woollahra Oval.

......

Randwick's playing stocks had already been boosted ahead of yesterday's clash with Manly. The Galloping Greens welcomed back five players - four of them forwards - from the side that lost to the Marlins the previous week, including loosehead prop Sekope Kepu, hooker John Fonokalafi, No.6 Seilala Lam, No.8 Ben Mowen. The fifth player was Wallabies Tri Nations tourist and outside back Nick Cummins.

.......

Points will be very tight for Randwick.

4 wallabies = 80 points (Beale, Chisholm, Elsom, Mitchell)
4 S14 players = 40 points (Phibbs, Kepu, Mowen, Cummins)

Ignoring discounts, that is 136 points out of a maximum 140. 4 points left for the rest of the squad?

I think that Phibbs will come in at zero points under the long service rule.

Ok ............ so when is a Transfer acceptable, if someone signs up for the year for a club, how long before it is unacceptable to transfer and why? and when does the club lose their "rights" over that player?
It's not ok to shuffle players from Qld straight into a Shute shield semi final game, it might be in the rules. But it's not right.
Where does it end? Would you be happy to transfer a couple from Uni to play for you in the GF "for experience"if they were to lose on the weekend?

Lawrie Weeks was Sydney Uni's water boy on Saturday. He had played in Queensland Uni's Premiership winning team a couple of weeks earlier. The only reason he played for UQ was that the Reds were paying him back for leaving them for Melbourne and wouldn't let him play for his longstanding club here.

I am sure that the Uni selectors would have been delighted to draft him into their side but there are fairness issues involved.

They didn't, they were down here before the semis to qualify

Well done to Randwick. It was a low skills game I thought but the Wicks showed high purpose. Have to feel sorry for Manly coach Phil Blake in that his guys didn't show up to play their best; however Blake would know better than most that it's the coach's job to see such a thing doesn't happen.

I was surprised to see Kepu scrummage Fairbrother off the park
Flabbergasted is more like it as Fairbrother probably hasn't been bested all year, and things didn't get any better when he limped off and Eddie A switched over to THP. I recall saying something similar last week also, after lauding Eddie earlier in the Shute Shield.

Deans will have watched that contest with some interest and will have a good gander next week also. So long as he stays on the left hand side of the front row it could signal a comeback of sorts for Kepu.

Much of what is now being said now, was said back then when the topic [about dastardly Sydney Uni] was active.
And was said last year and will be next year. To save time we should type out our comments on a word processor and cut and paste them the following year.

The main views cannot be reconciled:

- Uni offer too much to players that other clubs can't.
- It would be better for the comp to spread the good players around.
- Having Uni so strong is bad for rugby.

- Uni have a brilliant programme and deserve to attract players.
- You can't force players to go elsewhere.
- Having more Uni type clubs will be good for rugby.

Etc, etc - for every valid argument there is at least one valid counter.

So why do we bother? Why not?

who reads earlier posts?
Hardly anybody, especially if they are more than one page back.

... why does no province want Lala Lam? He and Jack were with the brumbies but have since been discarded. Jack to Waikato and Lala to nowhere.

Good point. Lala is the type of guy that should have been in the Brumbies stable for when Smith got hurt. Though he's not a lot older than Hooper or Colby F, he would have been a more appropriate replacement.

Blew me away, too. Can only assume it was a combination of Kepu finally being fully fit and playing on his preferred LHP side and Fairbrother playing hurt. Fairbrother is better than that.

Kepu has been scrummaging well all year. He gave Souths (one of the better scrums) and Nic Henderson a very tough day at Forshaw this year.

I'm not really surprised at all considering Kepu was a solid replacement in the scrum for Robinson on the Wallabies EOYT...

He's a much better LH than Daley...

I'll be up in Sydney over the Shute Shield Grand Final weekend and I'm thinking about heading down to watch the game. Turns out my sister who I'm staying with seems to live about 1km from Concord Oval, so it would be rude not to really. Will it be a matter of rolling up on the day and getting in, or is there a need to pre-book tickets?

As an Eastwood supporter, it is a bit disappointing in one way for the team to be facing a host of ring-ins this weekend. On the other hand, I suppose it is good for the Shute Shield if the stars of the game want to play in the finals series.

Maybe we will get back to the days of the big crowds at the SFS. Hope so, anyway.

On the "ring ins", in the ABC telecast they said Mitchell stepped on to the field in 4ths the day of the Bled in Sydney, just to make sure he was available in the finals. As Elsom hasn't played all season for Randwick, I would be surprised if he would be available.

Lam is a great player and he has performed consistantly every week. He provides what many here often call for the "dominant tackle". He is a good link man and pretty handy on the ball as well. The fact that he does top 100Kg seems to count against him regardless of all these other attributes.

With it being highly likely that Elsom will start for the Wicks this weekend I would not be surprised at all if Lam starts at 7.

The wicks looking a very good starting team this week:-

1. Kepu
2. Fonokalafi
3. Taukeiaho
4. Maninoa
5. Chisholm
6 Elsom
7. Lam/McGann
8. Mowen
9. Phibbs
10. Browne
11. Mitchell
12. Tiquiri
13. Cummins
14. Tombleson
15. Foley

He was apparently a star for the Queanbeyan team before he got poached into the Shute Shield... it's a shame he hasn't gone further...
