Well to me it seems fairly obvious that is what Eastwood have done, as mentioned in this thread for a 22 man squad you must have 6 front row able and for a 23 man squad you must have 7 front row able.

My understanding is that all 7 grades played at Uni on Saturday so they should have had a selection of 2nd grade,3rd grade & 1st grade colts front rowers available for selection.

In the environment of grade rugby the decision should be up to the referee if the player who is front row experienced but not of the standard required needs to have intervention i.e Uncontested Scrums.

Eastwood's call was clearly a tactic to cancel out a major strength of Sydney Uni's game.

TG or Riddler what's happened to Sinclair Fischer - Gray why hasn't he played the last few seasons?

SFG unfortunately retired due to cronic back injuries. He could never get to 100% while playing and it just kept getting worse. Saw him at Chatswood Oval a few weeks ago and offered an exclusive fourth grade contract, he politely declined.

Thankfully I missed what sounded like an embarrasing 1st grade effort from Gordon in the weekend. I can however report that the mighty 4s got back on the winning track against the Manly 4s who contained one J. Hopoate playing in the forward pack. Hopoate was in vintage form, picking up a yellow card in the 2nd half.

Hopoate the club hopper, if I remember correctly he turned out in the lower grades for Penrith once hoping he wouldn't get caught but did.

I look at that Gordon side and think to myself that they should match Uni this week see what happens though... Is Nath Nicol still injured? Billy Ratu injured as well? I notice Jared Barry is back in 2nd grade. Backline starting to look fairly reasonable with the Force players in the mix and with Turner to come in at half after the U20 WC could be looking rather smick. Mortlock hopefully as well :thumb Is Hercus injured again as he is not in 2nd grade again? Neither is Keil? Are they dropping like flies?

Uni have got some good forwards back in Dennis, McCutcheon, McCalman, Tilse (although Tilse v Jerry Yanuyanu is pretty even) and Charles, but they have been struggling in the backs. I was hoping either Hangers or Hux would play 5/8 this week as they have been lacking a hard head there to give them direction.
The conditions will probably make it a forwards battle so hopefully Uni will get away with it.

Cyril Towers (30)
They'll be getting some good forwards coming back down, but overall Uni is still struggling. A lot of the S14 players are having the week off (Hangers, TC, Hux, Mumm, Burgo) and there a 7 or 8 very good players either in the 7s or the Aus U/20s. So what is a 2nds team this week will be closer to 3rds in a month or so.

So who's going to the Uni v Gordon game? Perhaps the semblance of a mini-GAGR gathering? Topo? Bruce Ross? Aussie Dominance? ThatGuy?

I've got to drop Mrs Riddler and her sister off at the airport at 10am (a week of bachelorhood for me) so will probably be at the "birthplace of Australian rugby" fairly early, hopefully catch the end of ThatGuy's 4ths putting the filth to the sword and getting ready to see the wonderful team from the "heartland of Australian rugby" achieve a much needed win in firsts.

Topo, are you easy to recognise? I assume Bruce looks like his photo :)

I look like a fat almost 50 exprop with a greying beard. That should limit it to about 50 of us.
I normally sit on the left hand side of the grandstand a few rows back from the walkway near the steps. Probably have Mrs Topo a daughter or 2 and a brother with me. Old man Mumm and Carter are usually nearby.

Will be there for the lower grades at least - depending on how we are going I might stick around...

Must win game for 1st grade and will definitely be a tough one looking at that uni side. Pitty Waugh isn't playing - would have loved to seen the master take on the apprentice.

They didn't really have any pace did they, will change in the next few weeks as players come back Sills/Cummins etc.

Anyone got a report on Sydney Uni's comfortable victory over Gordon keeping them to nil?

TheRiddler

Dave Cowper (27)
Despite winning 4th, 3rd and 2nd grades (2nds was a great game and the right side of a 35-10 result), Gordon couldnt do the job where it really mattered. They were awful - again. Lack of a game plan, poor organisation, basic mistakes, woeful handling (I had to check the Kickey wasnt managing them) - against a well structured University that welcomed back some big names in Inman, Tilse and Dennis. Mr Roodt once again lived up to his nickname, he really offers nothing and for his size he rarely breaks the line and is very ineffective at the ruck. As in previous weeks, Jared Barry offered more in the 10 mins he was on the Dud did all game. Thought Pauli Tuala was also a good sub.

The way Gordon are going at the moment, I fear that even Parra could be a challenge too far.

And once more Angus Gardner showed why he is one of my least favourite refs going around. Pedantic to the nth degree and zero player communication.

I hate to blame a coach, but you look at what Fear did with a very similar bunch and what Hopkins is doing with them, we really need someone with a bit of pedigree in the coaching ranks back in charge.

They have looked downright awful this whole season.

Thoughts Riddler?

TheRiddler

Dave Cowper (27)
Mentioned the same thought to my viewing colleague this arvo. I also wonder what effect the constant chopping and changing is having on the team. I know there was a thought before that Fear stuck by his favourites too much and would rarely drop anyone but the exact opposite seems to be happening at the moment and there is constant changing. This afternoon both Whittaker and Haylet-Petty came back into the team from the Western Force and neither set the word on fire with the hooker getting numerous lineout calls/throws wrong and the centre dropping oodles of ball.

I dont think the Gordon coffers are exactly overflowing with funds at the moment (hence one reason Fear was let go) so not sure they are in a position to be able to recruit a proven, experienced and capable coach.

Now I know you can't be perfect but I see some of these overseas players coming over and commanding things that cost money and I look at that site TG posted a link too and they have these minimum requirements. This is what Scott Sutherland put as his requirements :

Player Seeks: Accomodation, Airfares, Employment, Match Fee, Retainer, Vehicle

Now I highly doubt he is getting a vehicle but anyway.

Unless a bloke is going to be a genuine first/second grade player I would be forgetting about the Match Fee, Retainer and Airfares.

Scott Sutherland is playing 4th Grade!

I guarantee you could find many local players from Country(maybe not the genuine top ones, but a few CHS kids/Country schools kids who will then come through and play grade in 5 years time) and other city clubs who would choose to play for Gordon if the club offered to find them a job and help find a place to live(most city players I doubt would take up this option).

The other thing that annoys me is with our juniors we don't seem to retain that many a lot go to Uni but if we retained and focused on these like Eastwood does we could have that much depth it would be that much cheaper as well due to the loyalty factor involved.

One thing I like though is the club is using the Central Coast factor well, target that area and it's basically like having a second feeder, target Newcastle as well. Gordon are the closest club to these two areas and have a distinct advantage a lot of these kids would kill to play colts/grade footy.

Louie - Post below

Same at Southern Districts as well, although Gordon it's more most are around still but the team that has been successful for the last few years is being placed under pressure and some are playing a bit of 2nd grade. 2nd grade have some very good individual players but haven't really gelled yet. Although they seem to have gone quite well today.

How did Dion Berryman go Riddler?

topo

Cyril Towers (30)
Well, from the Uni point of view it was a good win in 1s. The forwards were pretty dominant and got over the advantage line a lot of the time. Dennis and McAlman in particular were good in this regard. McCutcheon was a fantastic fetcher and, in my humble opinion taught Alcock a few lessons. Having said that, Alcock was pretty good. Uni still need a 5/8 as Rocko struggles there. Hopefully Hangers will be back next week to fill that hole.
Sam Carter won a huge amount of line out ball, Inman was very impressive and Trist is back to his damaging best.
Good days ahead for Uni, but Manly at Manly will be a real acid test of an unsettled side next week.

Should have Waugh, Hangers, Carter and Hux back next week.
