School sporting scholarships/recruitment

You will find some of the year11 scholars started in the last term of year 10. this isn't the only school with a similar reputation to start at this time. Possibly anticipating using a loophole in the player points system that hasn't yet been implemented .
alternatively the point system discussed isn't going to be adopted for a season or two
They could write another clause in the association rules (clearly not associated with rugby as Rugby has laws) allowing dispensations or allowance to breach the salary points cap on anniversary years

Giving yourselves quick self gratification by saying " Oh, HOW GOOD were My Old Team This year?" we smashed GPS/ISA/CAS/Water polo etc etc.
STOP TRYING TO DEFEND YOURS AND OTHERS ACTIONS PLEASE.
The old spin of 'well everyone else is doing it' just doesn't rub. Please stop. You have Scots being openly touted as offering supps to students, 13 of 15 at NC on freight frees Every other school supposedly blaming every other school. Country kids who come to boarding schools all being questioned as soon as they show they can catch, kick, pass, throw whatever.

This is really out there but how are these crop of lads looking with ... Education????

Given you have quoted my post and then said "STOP TRYING TO DEFEND YOURS AND OTHER'S ACTIONS....,"
you feel that exposing and mocking the idiot machinations of those born to rule, as I tried to do, might be considered a good defence.

Defending them or any other bogon trained monkeys that think pointing a pinky when holding plastic glasses of Chardonnay or annunciating the e at the end of a word with a blocked nose means you have made it...........nah!

Read some of my less medicated rantings and you would know Defending this mob isn't where I come from

13 out of 15 on scholarship is just wrong!
7 out of these 13 starting in year 11 is just a joke.
Surely none of the other GPS sides are anywhere near this level?

13 out of 15 - wrong in so many ways, gotta feel sorry for the paying parents.

It however speaks volumes to the dedication of the two from year 7, not on scholarship but obviously having a massive crack at achieving their year 7 dream of a 1st XV jersey.

Hope they get their deserved opportunity.

5. Anthony Vasilis Year 11 (Scholarship)
6. Stuart Mill Year 11 (Scholarship)
7. David Morris Year 11 (Scholarship)
8. Lachlan Cannell Year 11 (Scholarship)
9. Joey Lussick Year 9 (Scholarship)
10. Ellis Abrahams Year 9 (Scholarship)

13. Taane Milne Year 11 (Scholarship)
14. Josh Mitchell Year 7
15. Simon Kennewell Year 11 (Scholarship)

Bloody disgraceful.

Newington is to rugby union as Blacktown Patrician Brothers is to rugby league; both import without giving a damn about the overall effect it has on the schoolboy game; in general.

Is this Scholarship list confirmed by Newington insiders?

Out of the 15 listed in the "scholarship" post there are some things that may not be correct.
Vuni and Sione are "tongan" scholarships which while obviously they can play football its a bit more than that.

At least 2 others are not on Scholarships and 3 or 4 are on 1/2 or 1/3 scholarships.

In the interests of full disclosure I am a Newington Old Boy (K-12, late 70s to late 80s), I can't recall seeing a fFirst XV win against ayone other than High, Grammar of occasionally Scots for during my time at the College in the later years, so I'm obviously pleased at the College's recent successes. It is quite clear that the offering of pure sporting scholarships is forbidden by the GPS Code of Conduct and I do not endorse the provision of scholarships by ANY school purely for the purpose of winning a GPS Premiership (whether or not the provisionof a sholarship benefits the boy himself in other ways is a different matter). Ted S makes a good point, it is very incendiary to simply add "scholarship" next to a boy's name without knowing the context of that scholarship. It is very possible that a boy who is an excellent rugby player is also a gifted academic, shows leadership skills, plays music or has other talents which merit a schoalrship. To take a recent example, Fin McDonald (who incdientally was at Newington from K and not on scholarship) was Proxime Accessit (Runner up to Dux) with an ATAR of 99.90 and was a talented musician, who also happended to be a handy football player. A more dated example from my era was a Senior Prefect who was Dux (10th in the state for HSC and represented NSW in the Maths Olympiad), played First XV for 2 years, rowed First VIII for 2 years, was Captain of Debating, was in GPS Athletics and was SUO in Cadets His year the First XV had at least 5 boys in the top academic set as well. There was also another Senior Prefect who was Duix and played Australian Schoolboys. Who is to say that the other boys mentioned are also not such all-rounders? I know that Newington did provide several all rounder scholarships to this years' year 12 when they were in year 9 as othewise their year would have been an unusally small one, which would not have provided a sufficient number of leaders (and I mean genuine leaders NOT merely First XV players) for their 150th anniversary year so this could well explain 4,9,10, and maybe even 12.

In that case, they would be taking up scholarships that the school lists on their website, but alas not the case.
You are correct that the School was keen to grant scholarships to more rounded students than just Rugby players.
You will find several of the 1st XV also feature in the athletics squad or swimming.
I do recall the initial draft in yr 9 was 6 players students. All of them no doubt selected for their leadership qualities that were displayed at the State champs.
How many do you think there are in the 2's?
Obviously, when you are recruiting in such large numbers, there must be a few that don't live up to expectations.

I do not have a list of "scholarship" holders nor do I have a list of Newington's 2nd XV (or 1st XV for that matter since as far as I am aware the teamis are not final). The College lists the Tongan scholarships on its website (these are offeredeach year) and also lists all rounder sholarships (mainly for year 7 entry). I would hazard to guess the reason the year 9 sholarships are not listed is because thye were offered about 4 years ago as a "one off" for the 150th anniversay year as explained above. Yes, some of these boys did play at State Champs, does that preculde them from having any other skills that would merit an "allrounder scholarship"?

The clue is in the name and the criteria. There are quite a few talented sportsmen at the College who happen to excel in other areas of school life. Another non-scholarship example is the boy in year 12 who last came came close to making the Olympic team in his chosen sport who is also one of the top academics in the year as well as being a musician.

What has this got to do with stacking your 1sts to win a premiership?
I know kids who are on these so-called "leadership" bursaries: they show no leadership but they are good footballers.
Is the school really concerned that it cannot maximise the leadership potential of those already in the school? Is it unaware that animal nature being what it is leaders will emerge in any group and does not need to be imported?
And what better way to snuff out the leadership potential of an individual than to bring in an outsider on a leadership bursary to trump him?

Good question.
What does merit an "allrounder scholarship"?
Surely the website clearly lists the number available and their selection criteria?
Still waiting for you to explain the yr 11 draft. Can't see anywhere on the website where they have 6 or more spots available.

What defines leadership and how is it evidenced. What examples are there of these young leaders bringing about change for the better, charity work, helping disadvantaged children in the area, counseling peers, mentoring younger boys, debating school culture with teachers, parents, and old boys, post school involvement etc. To an outsider it appears some of these young men are semi-professional footballers and it would help if their other activities were highlighted.

What about the other 20?
You pick one kid who is doing something noteworthy apart from Rugby and think that explains away a cynical process of buying a premiership.
No one says the kids on the scholarships are not great kids.
It's the morally bankrupt method of the School that people object to.
There are several kids at that School that will derive absolutely no benefit from attending that school apart from enhancing their prospect of a Schoolboy rep jumper.
But when they are mid twenties, have a Mungo career that never took off and have qualifications that might get them a job in the drive thru at Mcdonalds. They will always have that premiership to look back on.
But then that's not your problem is it?

Sydney Middleton (9)
Me Voyeur,
thats a pretty simplistic view. If they don't attend that school then what do they have ? Likely not much.
I know of more than a few kids that have had/will have a much better grounding and enrty into the adult world because of the few years spent at a school like Newington.

The other alternative was to end up in a school where the educational care factor is a hell of a lot less.
