School sporting scholarships/recruitment

All the boys at Grammar (and I would bet SBHS) know that they will be playing C or 3rds so they know that it is unlikely they will encounter oversized opponents.
You are not getting the message: you don't work at the ARU by any chance?
THE CULTURAL AND SOCIAL BACKGROUND OF THE BOYS AT THESE SCHOOLS BARELY INCLUDES (playing) SPORT AND DOES NOT INCLUDE (playing or watching) RUGBY UNION.
So goes the rest of Australian society.

Sir, your message is plain wrong. Time was you couldn't book a squash court in Sydney or find some space on the harbour with all the windsurfers. Now both sports have practically vanished. What happened? Did the demographics change? No. The sports died because even the participants grew bored of them. To avoid this rugby needs to change. The only thing stopping change are those few nostalgic tradgics living in the past, or those with vested interests - those in the firsts through politicing. If you don't have anything creative to add to this forum perhaps you will find a lawn bowls or bridge forum more to your liking.

Squash died because land values priced the courts out of business.
Windsurfing was a recreational pursuit for 99% of participants.
Instituting weight divisions is not innovative,FFS my father played in weight divisions over 50 years ago.
As IS stated,Opens 3's and below are that in practice already, except for the really big boppa's who are harmless in that grade.
I'm not sure what demographic you believe you will recruit, with this rule change.
In any event,Oz is only one of many countries that play the game.International Rugby is not going to change anything, just to improve upon the fucked up Schoolboy setup in NSW.

Not sure why its necessary for me to go and post on a lawn bowls forum because I don't think your suggestion of <85kg comp is a good one: like ILTW my father played when they had weight divisions. Some comps still have them - subbies, NZ I think.
But for better or worse GPS (and most rugby) is based at its top on being "open".
Why all this is in a scholarships thread kind of baffles me: unless you're suggesting that SGS and SBHS should offer sporting scholarships to boys who are less than 85kg: most are at 13.
Anyway (at the risk of being banned) as my 13 year old said after playing SBHS: "why are their Asians bigger and better than ours?"

The big boppas , the undernourished #9's, 11's and 15's, the beanpole #5's, the avoiders of contact #14's, and the slow aggressive #2's etc in the 5ths and below epitomise what Rugby is all about. A team game with opportunities for all body shapes, sizes and abilities. Long may it remain that way (at least at the social/recreational level).

If you can make some simple rule changes to make all the contests winnable by either side you could extend your observation to above the 5ths. That would be a good thing, no?

Anyway as my 20 year old said after playing <85Kg Colts : "This is great. I get to play with my mates on Concord Oval, and I'm not constantly being overlooked." (in translation, of course)

so what are we to make of the allegation that the ARU banned weight divisions - see your post 4310 above?
You are all over the shop.

The post was made in response to the assertion, made by ILTW that International Rugby is not going to change anything, just to improve upon the fucked up Schoolboy setup in NSW.

really?? I'm sorry but some of your posts make me wonder..have we seen you before under another banner?
..

I think I know the guy you're talking about - he was totally crazy. He actually thought that scholarships were good because it got rid of the idea that people only ever care about the 1's, and getting into the 1's was the real sport, and not participating in Rugby at all.
I am completely different, I just try to think how we can increase the participation in the sport at all levels.

Ok.
Take him away fellas.
(but geez I had a good laugh at this one - he's like the guy who takes off his nipple in Mad Men: Ginsberg)

Back to matters concerning the title of the thread.

I heard last night that St. Augustines have a fantastic swimmer in the 13s, who is their 1st swimmer to represent at National Schools level. Apparently he's being chased by Trinity and Knox with, you guessed it, a scholarship. (nothing to do with his swimming ability of course;))
