So 31 of the 44 player selected come from four schools (Paarl Boys High, Paarl Gymnasium, Boland Landbou and Paul Roos). What is the point of Craven Week if the selectors are only going to select players from three schools and ignore almost the whole of Cape Town (unless you go to one of the four big southern suburb schools.

Personally I would prefer if the Stellenbosch and Paarl schools are kicked out of the Western Province union and instead join the Boland union (where they are actually situated) and let the players from Cape Town represent Western Province (or call it Cape Town). At the moment a kid coming from cape town has almost zero chance of playing Craven Week meaning that they have almost zero chance of making a career out of rugby.

Thing is the Paarl schools and Paul Roos is so much stronger in rugby. You will never see paarl Gym lose to a soutie schools, will lose against maybe the other Boland three but not against Slaapstad lot. This year however I feel Paarl Gym has been done in heavily. Unbeaten season so far and just as many as Boishaai and only a few more then Paul Doos. I wont be surprise at all to see our five player go on and play SA Schools, JD played there already in 2012, Vermeuloen, Bothma (capt) and Hermanus played CW in 2012 and Ryan Oosthuizen played for the golden medal SA u18 sevens team in Australia.

No Slaapstad Soutie school?

I am more worried about the qouta system in place, 9 out of 22 have to be PoC (thats what they call it nowadays) and at least 1 MoC, which is degrading Craven Week rugby to a joke. Window dressing the order of the day if you ask me, Brutes poaching PoC from Border and put them on the bench. Fuck (sorry for the swear word) when will they realise they do so much damage to our youth by doing this reverse apartheid shite and when will this end?

Congrats also to another Doep broer Michael laaitie (Danie) making WP Craven Week!

I don't deny that the big three are rugby super-powers, but what I am worried about is that the selectors are only looking at about three teams for players.

Let me put it this way. Paarl Gym has about 700 hundred boys, Paarl Boys a 1000 and Paul Roos around 1200 (thumbsuck numbers, but not far off) giving us total of lets say 3000. I know they draw talent from a much larger group, but to believe that 3000 boys represent more than half of the highschool rugby talent in the western cape seems more than little far-fetched.

Craven Week shouldn't be about selecting the Boishaai frontrow en masse because the combination gives WP the best chance of winning the final game, it should be about finding the best five frontrankers because those are the boys who deserve to state their case for higher honours.

I'll help you, Paarl Gym have 500 boys.

Its not about numbers at the schools, more about rugby teams at schools. Those three schools have minimum 15 teams. If I can take Paarl Gym as an example and its the tendense yearly. Paarl Gym have played Tygerberg, Outenikwa, Paul Roos, Bishops and Rondebosch this year already. matches & wins against this schools:
http://paarlgim.co.za/index.php/sport/173-rugby-uitslae

Tygerberg 13/13, Kwaggas 14/10, Paul Roos 17/5, Bishops 17/12, Rondebosch 15/14.

near 100% wins from u14-u18 age groups against the soutie schools, Boishaai and Paul Roos beat us every year with more teams winning, altho our first team will win mostly in the last 10 years against this two. Dunno if its afrikaans laaities or the Paarl air or the coaching. Thing is this three is way in front of the rest in WeePee.

Lets start with what I am not say.

I am not saying that the big three are not very, very good at rugby (though Paul Roos' results this year might suggest otherwise).

Neither am I saying that the boys selected for craven week are not all exceptionally talented players. (especially the three Gym forwards)

Furthermore I don't mean that more players should be included from the four big "soutie" schools (bishops, Rondebosch, SACS and Wynberg), quite the contrary really.

Let me illustrate my point. You mention that each of the big three field a minimum of 15 teams, so lets round it up to 20 each (60 teams total). Within 10km of where I am sitting right now there are De Kuilen, Brackenfell, Belville, Bellville HTS, DF Malan, Tygerberg, Durbanville, Stellenberg, Monument Park, President and JG Meiring who each field minimum of 10 teams each (110 teams). And that is only counting the afrikaner schools who enjoy very similar air to the boys in Paarl. Please note that these schools listed produced only one player for either of the WP squads, compared to 29 from the big three.

At this point I must concede that talent is much more concentrated in the big three because boys who are serious about the game drawn there. Take Pollard and Kitshoff they are both from Somerset West/Strand but move to Paarl Gym and Paul Roos for rugby.

My concern is, what if they didn't/couldn't move? Would they have been picked up?

I am worried that we are missing out on the next De Allende (Milnerton), Eben Etzebeth (Tygerberg) or Gio Aplon (Hawston) because the scouts only attend a fraction of the school games that are played every week. It is easy to see why they do it though, the talent factory is still in full swing, but I am worried that the net isn't being cast wide enough and we are losing talented players because too much focus is placed on games between Paarl Gym, Boishaai, Paul Roos, Landbou, SACS, Rondebosch, Bishops and Wynberg.

I had a look at your post #47 on this thread where you gave the final 78 players that were trialed for Craven Week in 2012.

Of those 15 came from the four big Soutie schools
8 - Boland Landbou
17 - Paarl Boys
13 - Paarl Gym
16 - Paul Roos

and 9 from whole of the rest of the province.

It seems pretty clear to me that the selectors are ignoring the vast majority of players in the province and focusing on only a couple of schools.

Paarl Gym have played Bishops, Rondebosch and Wynberg in their last three outings: 48 matches in all age groups, won 44 drew 1 lost 3. 1503-371 = 31-8 per match. Thats the differense between them and the Slaapstad lot.

Got hold of an unofficial schoolboy log for WP schools.
http://www.mycomlink.co.za/
(The Western Province Schools Rugby Super League logs are unofficial; sides are not obliged to play every other side in their league during a season. However, Bishops, Rondebosch, SACS and Wynberg traditionally play each other both home and away each year. Logs will updated weekly once all teams results are in.

3 Point for a win, 1 point for a draw and points differential gives precedence in ranking orders.)

Paarl what do you think of Duhan van der Merwe. He is 1,94 and weighs 98 kgs. He is definitely taller, heavier and faster in speed than Engelbrecht,

He is 18 years old and playing on the wing!

Paarl what do you think of Duhan van der Merwe. He is 1,94 and weighs 98 kgs. He is definitely taller, heavier and faster in speed than Engelbrecht,

He is 18 years old and playing on the wing!
Great prospect. Biggest thing for him is to stay humble, look like a bit of a windgat to me.

Interschools week, linewalking paradise !
