As you can see Boland Landbou is a special school. Agri school on the plaas outside Paarl (Agter paarl)and this year special for them with their 50th anniversary. They are Paarl Gyms biggest supporters when its interschool. Last year the Paarl Boishaaier sang "Old MacDonald had a farm" when they played each other and they just chant "Interschools" back at them. They palyed each other a week after interschools.

Next weekend is a long weekend and some BIG schoolboy rugby with the Wilde Klawer tournament in Kimberley. Looking forward to watch these matches live on national TV SS1

why doesnt the SA schoolboy side ever play aus or nz?
There is ample time on the Aussie and NZ calendars. The South African schools rugby season starts midway through term one, here it does not really start until well into term two. Inbound tours in particular can easily be accommodated before the various comps start. Conversely, notwithstanding the very long season in RSA, most schools will go out of their way to accommodate Aussie and NZ touring schools.

I dont think SA Schools have a long season like in top flight. Our schools have 4 terms in a year: Jan to March & Oct to Dec = summer sport like cricket & Apr to Jun & Jul-Sep winter sport like rugby & hockey. A rugby school like Paarl Gym have rules regarding this to try and not let the two get mixed up. Altho rugby conditioning starting at Jan only summer sport till 18h00. To play rugby for your school is very important for our kids. Fixture lists is fixed a year in advange and the Jun July holiday term is provincial Craven Week for our top players.

Wildeklawer results, Day One
The prestigious Wildeklawer Super Schools Tournament kicked off before a big crowd at Hoerskool Diamantveld in Kimberley on Saturday, 28 April, 2012. And the very first match was a thriller.

Monnas of Krugersdorp played Oakdale of Riversdale and with the match virtually at an end trailed 14-12 when their lock André Venter scored the winner.
The second match was also a thriller as Paul Roos got home with just one point, beating Maritzburg College 22-21. Paul Roos led 15-0 at half-time and with 13 minutes to go led 22-0 - and then College fought back.
Gimmies had a comparatively comfortable 35-25 win over Glenwood.
Grey had a good 37-20 win over Waterkloof after Klofies led 17-14 at the break.
Affies beat Paarl Boys' High 22-14 and Boland Landbou beat HTS Middelburg 37-22. Framesby of Port Elizabeth beat Ben Vorster of Tzaneen 49-13 and then there were two close results as Dr EG Jansen beat Louis Botha of Bloemfontein 27-23 and the host side Diamantveld beat Outeniqua 17-16.

Day 2
Wildeklawer results, Day Two

It was a beautiful, sunny morning at Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley for the second day of the Wildeklawer Super Schools tournament, and the rugby in the first, thrilling match matched the weather. It was a splendid match.

Maritzburg College v Diamantveld
It was also a match that could go either way as the lead changed several times. It was not quite the muscular Kriel twins against mercurial Granville Adams, though those were the three stars of the match. Adams scored first and Jesse Kriel last and Maritzburg College won 32-27.
Granville Adams sped down the left for his try in the left corner in the very first minute of the match. Right wing Dries du Plooy got the second, converted by Deon van Zyl to give the home side, who were enjoying a gentle breeze and a low sun, a 12-3 lead. At this stage it was all Diamantveld with their rhythmic backs.
But then fullback Jesse Kriel ran round Dries du Plooy and played inside to brother Danie who scored. Jesse converted and the score was 12-10. Danie Kriel then broke strongly and gave Jesse a chance to score. This gave College a 15-12 lead and a huge boost to their confident.
On the stroke of half-time Deon van Zyl kicked a penalty and the score was a fair 15-all at the break.
Deon van Zyl darted and powered through five College forwards to score and the home side led 22-15. Back came College and replacement left wing Banele Ngwenya had an overlap on the right, running round for a try at the posts. Then scores were level against at 22-all/
The scores stayed level till Granville Adams went scooting away, Gio Aplon style, down the left to score his second try. 27-22 to Diamantveld.
But College got close and powerful Jesse Kriel bumped off two defenders to score at the posts. He converted and kicked a penalty to ensure victory for his side.
It was a splendid match.

Outeniqua v Glenwood
Two five-metre line-outs early in the match set Outeniqua up for victory. Glenwood on the other hand did not recover from the setbacks.
The first five-metre line-out was a Glenwood ball but the throw was too long and nippy scrumhalf Leighton Eksteen snatched the ball, scored the try and converted it.
The second was an Outeniqua throw after a penalty. They set up a maul but burly Stefan Grundlingh burst away with the ball and powered over. Eksteen converted and then kicked a penalty. Outeniqua's next score was a great individual effort. Glenwood were tackled just outside the Outeniqua 22. Warrick Gelant, the strong, fast Outeniqua centre leant over the tackle and picked up the ball as players gathered suddenly he burst clear and raced over 70 metres for the try. That gave Outeniqua a commanding lead, one that was probably unfair to Glenwood. But they used two penalties to attack the Outeniqua line and big lock powered over to make the half-time scope 22-7.
The second half was disjointed but after a penalty goal Outeniqua again scored a try. Glenwood dropped the ball amongst the backs and Warrick Gelant toed it ahead, grabbed the high-bouncing ball and scored under the posts.
From a scrum Glenwood scored a splendid try when outside centre Nkululeko Marwana cut back and sprinted some 30 metres to score.

Grey College v EG Jansen
EG Jansen started off like a house on fire and were all over Grey. They had scored two tries before Grey got one but then a plethora of penalties seemed to quench their fire and sapped their confidence. In the end Grey won 41-22.
Their first try came from a long maul which they marched downfield till they gave the backs a chance and Johan Labuschagne cut back off a lost pass and scored. Ruan Potgieter converted.
After a few misses Pieter Jordaan goaled a penalty but back came the red-shirted Jansies and from a five -metre line-out they went wide and Leon Potgieter scored.
After this early promise the game ebbed away from the brave Boksburg side. Pieter Faber scored under the posts and then Pieter Jordaan kicked a conversion and a penalty goal to give the Bloemfontein side a 13-12 lead at half-time.
Grey's handling, wonky in the first half, improved and fullback EW Viljoen scored a hat-trick of tries while the only other EG Jansen try was scored by JP van der Nest.

Paarl Boys' High v Monument
There was a time when Paarl Boys' High, leading 25-6 at half-time and then 32-13 well into the second half looked to be cruising to victory but Monnas came back strongly so that the score was 32-28 at the end.
The first Boys' High try came from a Monnas' knock-on. Ryno van der Merwe picked it up and passed immediately. What happened from then on was the smoothest interpassing imaginable till Niel Maritz cut through for a try at the posts. With a dummy and a dive Pieter Schoonraad scored the second try and then fullback Hanno Kotze came into the line from a line-out and simply ran 50 metres and scored.
But Monnas came back in the second half. Steven du Plessis put pressure on Pieter Schoonraad at a defensive scrum and Dwayne Pienaar was on hand to score next to the posts.
Boishaai attacked with a long maul on their right and then went wide to give Darian Hock an easy run-in for the try. 32-13.
Monnas attacked and burly Stephan Vermeulen smashed through the defence for a try and then just before the final whistle Regie Viljoen cut through to end the scoring.

Affies v Paul Roos
After slipping up in the second half against Maritzburg College after being well ahead and nearly losing the match, Paul Roos were aware that they had to play to the end, especially as Affies led 15-14 at the break and it was probably their lighter pack that deserves most of the credit in their side's 32-22 over the powerful Affies side.
Affies scored the first try after Jason. First Jurie Linde broke and headed on a long run for the corner but he was held up over the line by Jason Worral and Marcus Geldenhuys. This produced a five-metre scrum for Affies. They bashed and Calvin Allison forced his way over.
There were two splendid tries in the match, once scored by Jason Worral of an inside pass and one when Affies one a turnover and hooker François Steyn raced away down the midfield with the ball in one hand before lobbing a long pass to left wing Andries van der Merwe who went over in the corner.
The sides each scored three tries but Jason Worral's kicking was the difference.

Paarl Gim v Waterkloof
It was an even first half with Paarl Gim just ahead 14-11, both sides scoring and nearly scoring, but then, breeze at back and Handré Pollard in charge, Gim eased away to a big 38-11 victory.
It was Pollard who juggled, straightened and broke clean through, drawing the fullback and giving Altus Momsen a simple run to the line.
Lourens Boddington dropped the only goal of the drop tournament and Kobus Marais kicked a penalty but then Handré Pollard got Wion Robbertse running and little Lotter {Pretorius sold a bit of a dummy and powered over between two forwards. That made it 14-6.
Waterkloof came back into contention when Lourens Boddington grubbered into Gimmies' ingoal and Rohan Janse van Rensburg grounded the ball just inside the touch-in-goal line. Waterkloof came back and Sean Phillips was tackled out right at the corner.
Gimmies attacked and Jacques Vermeulen was nearly over and in fact may have scored. Instead they had a five-metre scrum on the far left. Lotter Pretorius went wide right and then popped a perfect pass to Loek van der Merwe who had come in from the left wing and scored. 21-11.
Handré Pollard kicked a penalty goal and then put his side on the attack. Klofies threw into a defensive line-out and found Rikus Bothma instead. the strong eighthman powered to the line and then Gimmies went left where Handré Pollard skipped over under the crossbar.
Lotter Pretorius had a long break to put his side on the attack. They tapped a penalty and bashed at the line. Pretorius, who would not look out of place in an Under-14 side. got the ball and slipped eel-like through three hefty forwards to score.

Craven Week is only U18s. Schools level U19s. In the ideal world our high schools starts with grade 8 = U14, grade 9 =U15, grade 10 = U16, grade 11 = U17 & grade 12 =U18. The age level works from Jan to Dec iow if a kid gets 14 on Dec31 he will be U14. You also get a lot of parents keeping their kids back for a year if their birthday is late in the year and they'll end up as U19 in grade12. So the schools have to cater for them, we also have a few post matrix as we call them. These are the kids that stay on for another year to try and get his subjects right for university and a loophole Bishops tried in the past, keeping good rugby players for another year. Last year the WP schools boicott them for this very reason except Paarl Gym. Good question. Paarl Gym (only 500 boys) a smaller school compare to most in the SA Top20 always identify their age groups leader group earlier and will push a few talented ones to their U19A team while they are in grade 11. This core group will be their leaders when they are in grade 12. You also get some freak talents who plays first team from grade 11.

The age-groups in the RSA are identical to Australia and New Zealand, i.e. U/14, U/15, U/16 and then Opens.

The RSA school system is identical to ours, i.e. twelve years of schooling, with students typically turning 18 during Year 12. The only time you'll get a 19 year old still at school is where he has had to repeat a year. Only in the Western Cape (where Paarl Bok is from) is the open division refered to as U/19s. I think it may be a historical thing.

PS: Matric (short for matriculation) is a term commonly used for Year 12. Post-Matric (effectively Year 13) is an extremely rare thing, with only a few of the elite private schools offering the option as described by Paarl Bok.

FNB Top 20 - The final one

This is the final Top 20 for 2011 which takes into account the whole season, rather than each week's performances.

It is not an easy task as anyone can soon realise but it is done with fairness and care. Not that anybody would agree with it, not even the individuals who agree to the final listing.
Let's say again what we said at the start of the season: "It is good to get the ranking in perspective. It is not absolute, nor can it be, but it does increase interest in schools rugby in South Africa and it is an acknowledgement and extra reward as well as an encouragement for schools.
"But the most important perspective is that these are bit a few amongst a vast number of schools playing enthusiastic and skilful rugby in South Africa."

Rugby365 preview and history of the Affies vs Grey clash
CC: Grey vs Affies

Wed, 09 May 2012 22:35

Here we have a clash of two top South African rugby schools - Afrikaanse Hoer Seunskool of Pretoria and Grey College of Bloemfontein. They are both doing exceptionally well this year.
At present Grey are second on the FNB Top 20, Affies 3rd. This is a clash of the titans. We will be talking about the 1st XVs but in fact 56 teams will be playing 28 matches between the two schools. It is a massive day.
We talk about the 1st XV as the 1st XV represents the whole school. If somebody says Grey beat Affies, you know that the Grey 1st XV won though all other may have lost. The 1st XV counts, but for everybody there is enthusiasm, determination and fun.
Results this Year
Common opponents are not going to tell you much. They each played against Paarl Gim and Waterkloof. Grey lost to Gim and beat Klofies. Affies lost to Klofies and beat Gim.
Grey have played nine matches, losing to Paarl Gim 45-29 They have wins over two other Top 20 teams - Waterkloof and Westville.
Affies have played eleven matches, losing 23-16 to Waterkloof and to 32-22 Paul Roos in Kimberley. They have beaten four other teams currently in the Top 2-0 - Paarl Gim, Paarl Boys' High, KES and EG Jansen. They also beat Kearsney who were till recently in the Top 20.
Affies have had slightly stiffer opposition and have the advantage of playing at home.
It could just be a humdinger that will be broadcast live on Supersport and on four other occasions after that.
Television Broadcasts
The match will be broadcast on Supersport (SS1) as follows:

Saturday, 12 May, 2012: 14.45
Sunday, 13 May, 2012: 06.40
Monday, 14 May, 2012: 17.30
Tuesday, 15 May, 2012: 19.15
Wednesday, 16 May, 2012: 04.15
Each side has a player who was in the SA Schools side last year - strong prop Pierre Schoeman who captains Affies and centre Pierre Jordaan who captains Grey. Apart from Pierre Scoeman, Affies have seven players who either last year or in 2010 represented the Blue Bulls at the Grant Khomo Week.n Grey have eight who represented the Free State at Craven Week, three of them on the bench for this match. Marcus Kleinbooi of Affies was at Craven Week for the Bolue Bulls last year and Arrie Vosloo was also at Carvben Week foir the Free State but he is on the bench for Saturday's matchg. Missing foir Grey is Henco Greyling, a Craven Week player last year.
That all looks pretty even
An interesting player on the Affies wing is Andries van der Merwe who won the 110m hurdles at the 7th 7th IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille last September.
Affies have a big side and wouyld look to dominate Grey up front but, if they get their handling right, Grey can produce magic on the run with ball in hand.
There is a tremendous amount of pressure on the boys of both teams - of all 56 teams in fact.
