I'd like to know who " Radio" is too. Sick of reading Growden's stories and not knowing who he's talking about.

I was watching a bit of Currie Cup action on Saturday night trying to fill the void between the Bledisloe and the Springboks vs Pumas game.

In the Lions vs Cheetahs game, one of the players suffered an injury and the medicab was brought onto the field.

The injured player then proceeded to get up and start climbing onto the medicab. At this point I think the player realised that if he was able to climb onto the medicab himself without assistance, there wasn't much need for the medicab.

He then walked off the field.

love the deadpan tone of the whole thing and the lack of any smilies / emoticons made it genuinely funny to me. Now I can sleep peacefully.

Google's new feature that identifies searches for famous people (sporting stars, actors, politicians etc) has picked a great photo to use for Beau Robinson

2012 Grand Final Sydney University v Southern Districts - In the 66th minute the excellent 6. Trent Dyer intercepts a lineout throw.

Brett Papworth - “It's Dyer: he's got his hands on that ball.”

Steve Robilliard -“There could be some Dyer consequences”

There were: Uni fullback Roberts scored after several phases about 80 seconds later.

At half time in one of the Shute Shield semi-finals ABC reporter Jim Maxwell does a review of the Wallabies test the previous Saturday in the Rugby Wrap. As the vision shows TPN and Samo with their Afros, standing together and waiting for the kick-off, Maxwell says: ”The forwards were up for a hair-raising performance.” - Well, I thought it was funny.

Sale v Saracens Rd, 2 The TV shows Sale CEO, Steve Diamond down on the bench. Having played hooker for nearly 300 games for Sale he doesn't look like a movie star, but on match day he seemed to have walked into a door, as well. The TV commentators talked about the talkative executive and his appearance.

Nick Mullins: “It's unusual to see Steve down on the bench for so long; he's usually banned. His specialist subject would not be biting his lip. He's got strong opinions and is very quick to voice them..”

Austin Healey (when the camera did a close-up shot of Diamond): “It reminds me, when I watch him, of Lord Of The Rings.”

Perpignan v Tolouse R5 – Co-commentator Perry Freshwater got excited for Perpignan and when one of his old team mates scored said: “Go, you good thing.” How come Kiwis are allowed to use Aussie expressions? I thought Bhudda had patented that one.

In the 28th minute hooker Gilheim Guirado threw a short one to huge lock Romain Taofifenua in the lineout. He reached over a couple of would-be tacklers and returned the pass to Guirado, who scored.

Freshwater said the big lock carried the ball in one hand as though it were a tennis ball. Main commentator Robbie Nock said he was glad ex-team mate Freshwater had mentioned Taofifenua by name and added:

I haven't mentioned him in the match because I didn't know how to pronounce his name.”

Worcester v Gloucester Rd 3

Ben Kay the wiley ex-England player an co-commentator - on props: “There is a psychological battle: not only with their opposite number, but with the referee – get into the referee's head that you're in total command in the the scrums and suddenly all the penalties in the scrums start going your way.”

Later the commentators were talking about flyhalf Joe Carlisle, who was playing for Worcester at 12 this year, and the switch appeared to be working.

Nick Mullins: “It alters the way they play with Carlisle there instead of Dale Rasmussmen who has gone back to be a lawyer in New Zealand. Rasmussen's defence was outstanding ...”

Won't be working for the Crown then.

Argentina v New Zealand II – La Planta – Talking about 35 y.o. Roncero coming to the end of his career:

Tony Johnson: “He looks like the bloke that comes to rip out your hot water system – with his bare hands.”

• Talking about test matches in Argentina: anybody notice Gordon Bray in the crowd at Rosario?

• Oz Schools beat NZ Schools again last week, in Auckland, with in-your-face play. Mitchell Whiteley, was the second player of aboriginal descent to skipper the team in the last 6 years and there are no brownie points for guessing who was the other one. Winger John Porch can also lay claim to being an indigenous player.

Quiz – What do Whiteley, Porch and prop Tomas Robertson, who came of the bench in Auckland, have in common (apart from the obvious)? Hint: it has to do with Wellington.

Yeah - all born in Wellington Hospital.

Good one Lindommer - my ploy of mentioning Auckland, making folks think of NZ, did not work..

Lindommer has a solid knowledge of all things rural, particularly rural geography (not to mention wine regions). I think he was always going to be pretty quick off the mark on that one LG!

A couple from tonight's European Cup matchday.
In the Treviso against Toulouse game, just before a scrum is played, we can hear the referee saying:
"David... David... David!!" (I suppose he was talking to the TMO) "I can hear what you're saying, please keep it quiet".

In the Stade Français against Grenoble game, played in Le Havre, Stade Français had a penalty advantage inside Grenoble's 22. The SF fly-half Nicolas Bézy attempts a drop goal, after which we see the referee raise his arm while we hear the whistle. Bézy celebrates his drop goal, the music starts in the stadium speakers and the score changes from 7-0 to 10-0... only to realise that the referee was whistling the penalty, and not the successful drop goal attempt.

Nice piece of commentary on the Dragons v Ulster game about John Afoa who'd just come on as a replacement and threw a beautiful floated pass.

"he has the makings of 2 good centres"

You only need one ball

Ulster v Castres – Rd 1 – Heineken Cup -

- In the 22 minute the Ulster scrummie Paul Marshall chipped the ball through to the Scarlets in-goal and chased it. There was nobody in sight except some players warming up near the dead-ball line. They scrambled away but left a ball bouncing around in-goal nearly where the ball in play was. Luckily Marshall had his eye on the pill and scored the try, but wouldn't it have been a hoot if he grounded the wrong ball?

- Marshall started for Ulster because Pienaar had just recently returned from the Rugby Championship. Pienaar doesn't have to buy too many drinks in Belfast because he has won so many games for the club with last minute penalties or droppies.

In this game they needed a 4th try for a bonus point and, sure enough, in the 82nd minute Ruan Pienaar took the right option and scored the try. The Ulster crowd was expecting him to do something late in the game; a fan raised a sign which said: “YOU HAVE BEEN RUANED”

Scrums

Argentina v Wallabies - Rosario - The Wallabies had Sitaleki Timani playing 6 which resulted in Oz having one of their biggest scrums ever at 921 kgs. But that wasn't as big as the Bok scrum against NZ in Soweto a few hours before. They weighed in at 938 kgs, or just over 117 kgs per man.

Clermont v Scarlets - Heineken Cup - Rd.1 – The first scrum was in the 31st minute of the game and that ended in a penalty for the home team. Unlike a lot of Top14 teams Clermont are not known for their strong scrummaging. Maybe they should beef up a bit - their scrum weighed in at just 846 kgs.

Referees

Bath v Exeter - Rd 7 - The visitors knocked the ball on late in the game and Wayne Barnes ordered a scrum to Bath near their own line. I don't know who initiated it, but before the scrum happened the TMO looked at an incident of foul play by a Bath player.

The (unheard on TV) explanation by the TMO must have been unclear because Barnes said: “I've seen it on the screen .. so I'm making a decision that he's played the man without the ball … thanks for your information.”

The TMO protocol certainly has changed hasn't it?

Castres v Northampton – Rd.2 - Heineken Cup

Castres were pinged for wheeling the scrum deliberately. Just before the restart after the penalty goal had been slotted the Castres captain asked the referee about it.

Alain Rolland responded: “Just tell the fat boys to push straight.”
