Rugby League players who could have/could make the switch

I'm late to this party but I hope that Greg Inglis has been mentioned.

Slot him in at inside centre and then prepare space for Bill in the trophy cabinet.

scaraby

Ron Walden (29)
If he is prepared for half what he is worth in the NRL. Does anybody really think this is likely to happen, ever?
he's a Rugby player playing League...not a future convert he just wants to come back to the game he grew up with and he is a gun 8...get him back quick..he is the missing link for 2015 ..a big hard arse running number 8 who hits like a freight train. H eknows the game no training needed before anyone says it will take too long to get him up to speed.

Okay, fine. Nobody doubts that he is a rugby player with a lot of ability.

However, he is apparently getting paid around $800k in his next contract.

He is a professional. How much of a discount is he prepared to accept?

There is absolutely no way that he would earn more than half a mill in Australian rugby, and for that he would have to be Willie O and Toutai Kefu combined.

Why not? Folau gets around 800k I assume

So, in your new role as the ARU's Salaries Administrator, you are going to offer Fifita $800k?

Can you share with us some of your other plans? Remember, we need to pay for a squad of about 32 elite players.

Give us some actual examples, please, of the players in the current squad who are worth $800k a year.

I'd like to see Fifita back. I don't know how much money is too much in this situation.

I thought the original offer to folau was a bit of a waste considering the money trouble the code had at the time, and I was very wrong about that in hindsight.

Get him on a 2 season deal (2015-16), and tell him if he performs well at the WC and possibly olympics then he'll make mega bucks in france in 2017 and 2018 before the next world cup. An investment in his future.

Folau was a once in a lifetime bargain, and I have been watching the game for a very long lifetime. He came along at a cut-down price, at a time when we were pretty much on our knees as a code, and he has singlehandedly gained us many times more in free publicity than he is paid, plus, of course, he has performed sensationally on the paddock.

Fifita is not now, and never will be, in any way comparable to Folau.

He might well be a good Wallaby eight. We do need one, no doubt about it. But let us keep a sense of proportion.

Folau is worth considerably more than Fifita, on, and off, the field.

Bullshit.

Fifita is a forward - a damaging one in that. In case you were unaware (I'm sure you're not) but the forwards are were the Wallabies struggle the most, not the backs. He's arguably a better prospect than Folau.

Look how much RFU/Bath paid for Burgess. I rate Fifita twice the rugby player of Burgess. Burgess is a one-dimensional boof-head. Like like league forwards he can run hard and tackle hard (often illegally). Fifita actually has skills. He has pace (I remember him chasing down a winger), footwork and a good offloading game. Best of all he's mobile and has a high workrate for a player his size. I see him as a Billy Vunipola but more talented. He could be the best #8 in the world. He's already the best prop in the NRL.

HELLO!
He just signed a four year deal last month.
He needs to shit in some shoes nicely,in order to ;
A) get a release
B) still be palatable enough to pick up.
How does he do that?

It's pretty obvious that no serious rugby identity would agree with you.

In case you're unaware (maybe you are), Fifita was on the open market recently, and the ARU either did not bid, or did not bid anything like enough.

I'm on their side on this one, not yours. The RFU/Bath Burgess biz is totally, absolutely, irrelevant.

Actually, Fifita is on a $3.4M contract over 4 years, so that's $850k / year average, although no doubt it will be tiered as NRL contracts normally are. Some are very heavily backended indeed. Cronulla offered $700k/year, but he took the money despite preferring to stay.

For those salary cap watchers, some NRL stars have contracts that say they are paid a percentage of the salary cap. Those guys are set to win out big in the next few years. I think Thurston was one; not sure on that though.

Unfortunately, the new NRL TV deal means that the NRL top and mid tier players will get substantial pay rises in the next few years. Don't expect many top players heading from the NRL to rugby in the next few years.

Next rugby TV deal needs to be good, or Australian rugby will be in real financial trouble if they try to compete with the other codes.

We're clearly not as broke as people seem to think. Players are getting paid.

Folau is a fullback - ain't going to win us shit really. Look at The Rugby Championship results. Fifita would go some way in getting us on par in the forwards.

Would he ? I mean he was 21 when he left the Brumbies if he was such a superstar he would have been there.. im not saying his not worth the money but Izzy is worth more.. so spending 850k or more on a player who may .. may make us win or 800 k on Izzy who kids love and will help us win..

But hey what ever
