Rugby League players who could have/could make the switch

There's certainly a need for a better stadium in Sydney's far eastern suburbs, and that large swathe of parkland at Heffron Park Maroubra looks very tempting, but why do the Rabbitohs need a flash training facility after the refurbishment of Redfern Oval? Have any Gaggerlanders seen the modern RO? It's smallish ('bout half the stand size of Concord) but beautifully set out, perfect for NRC matches, close to Redfern Station and plenty of places nearby for a feed or a beer. Don't be put off by Redfern's reputation, it's slowly becoming gentrified.

Burgess is being lined up as a 6 by Bath according to media reports from England, that probably kills any chance of him playing in 2015 World Cup. He'll have penalty machine written all over him for his first couple of years if he plays in the forwards.

I hate to think of what an English pack will do to us if Burgess does make the grade at 6. Lawes and Launchbury are enough of a handful. The three of them would be very tough to combat.

I doubt he'll pick up the position to be an international class flanker, he could become a passable 12 although I have my doubts but there is so much more to being a 6 than running into people and tackling someone running at you which is pretty much the height of his transferable skills. Even then his ball carrying style will see him choke tackled to oblivion.

England tried the same with Andy Farrell and quickly realised that it was either 12 or bust after he'd played 6 for a year. Right now I'd say he will be a pretty large weight on Baths salary cap for a couple of years before joining the list of failed lumps that England have pinned their ongoing problems at 12 on.

TBH Burgess is a far far better league player then Farrell ever was, runs well harder and hits well harder.

I think he will be wasted in European, especially English rugby as all the seem to do is roll around on each other and wait for penalty goals. As for baths salary cap I imagine they would have worked something out with the English rugby union, if they are going to have to do the publicity stunt for english rugby union then they are not going to want to be crippled by it if it doesn't work out.

I think it should be kept in mind that the gap between the NRL and SL (which Farrell only ever made it in) is bigger then the gap between super 15 (southern hemisphere rugby) and the abomination you blokes play in the northern hemisphere...

Rugby league side Salford Red Devils and the rugby union team SaleSharks will meet in a cross-code challenge at the AJ Bell Stadium they share on Sunday 26 August.
The co-tenants will play one half of rugby union and the other under rugby league rules in a similar fashion to Sale's match against St Helens in 2003 which ended in a 41-39 win for the Sharks.
The match will also bring back memories of the 1996 double-header between Bath and Wigan at Maine Road and Twickenham.
Salford's coach Brian Noble said: "This is a great opportunity for our guys to pit their skills against different athletes. It will be a big challenge but I think they'll relish it. The fact that this is for two such fantastic causes is going to be a big motivator for both teams."
Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond said: "Our players will definitely be up for the challenge."
The AJ Bell Trust has committed to donating at least £50,000 from the proceeds of the match to The Princes' Trust and Maggie's, which is trying to raise £6m to build a new centre at The Christie in Withington to provide support to cancer sufferers.

I don't think the ARU should have been so quick to dismiss Blake Ferguson. The NRL currently don't want him so he prob could have been had for cheap. Put him on a 2 year contract with the Rebels or Force with a 1 chance no BS policy. He is a big fast back and could have been a very good Super Rugby back with some work.

Carney was another guy in big trouble and came back amazingly well when they showed him some faith. If Ferguson is carving them up in 2 years the ARU will be kicking themselves. Would have also been more publicity and a blow to the NRL even if they would not admit to it.

The bloke just got done for indecent assault, I hope no rugby team touches him with a barge pole to at the very least show in our game their are moral standards that are applicable to everyone.

Being out a couple of nights before a game till 4am is one thing that can be forgiven through hard work and earning back trust, Blake Ferguson's indiscretions are IMO unforgivable to someone who is supposed to be a role model.

It's a tough one, on one hand he "indecently assaulted" a woman (amongst other things). But on the other, all he got was a good behaviour bond. The court system has seen to the case, we don't have all the facts/precedents and they do, it's that simple.

However, recruiting him would be a massive risk for any sporting organisation, particularly one that prides itself on image. So he'd have to come cheap or with some fierce clauses in his contract, maybe both.

I don't think he's a sensible investment for a Super Rugby club, where the PR fall-out is the worst (he made headlines here), the risk considering the consistency of his fuck ups, and the fact that the bad environmental factors are local (the blokes he gets smashed with and Mundine).

Japan on the other hand have corporation teams who are in no way going to sully their reputation for a bloke with his rap sheet. It's not a case of a Toshiba sponsored team hiring an unsavoury character, it's literally Toshiba doing the hiring. Big no-no.

So, I think his best bet is France. Their D2 clubs are showing that they're willing to make big buys and take signing risks. Maybe even a lower ranked Top 14 club could rationalise the risk.

It's a massive watch this space scenario, I like watching his play and personally wouldn't mind it if he rocked up for an Aussie Super Rugby side in 5 years time if he keeps his shit together over that period.

It's rare that someone is beyond redemption, and he certainly isn't, but it'll be years before his name is even relatively clean.

I agree with JSRF10. The ARU should go nowhere near someone who has just been convicted of indecently assaulting a woman.

You want to swap JOC (James O'Connor) for Ferguson - no way, no how.

No Super Rugby club in Aus wanted to touch JOC (James O'Connor) because of his behaviour and attitude. I am sure that Ferguson would be an even bigger DH that would only use rugby as a stepping stone back to the NRL. I don't want him using my game that way and I don't want my game allowing itself to be used.

very good response.

the difference between the two codes of what is acceptable and what is not is VAST.

We make headlines cause a guy is out late, and sanctions apply because of that.

Man, that ain't nuffin compared to assault, pissing in hotel corridors or drink driving, all normal occurrences in the other code.

Getting pissed while injured on tour and punching teammates.......

Let's just agree that sometimes young blokes make bad decisions on the drink.
It would appear this game has raised the bar regarding acceptable behaviour in recent times.
Thankfully.

I'm sure the chance to express himself by boshing the ball up 5 metres 15 times a game over ruled any decision about money or playing in a sport that exists outside Sydney and Leeds.

If it wasn't for games in Auckland, Brisbane and Melbourne, most Sydney rugby league players wouldn't leave their local suburb except for a couple of trips to Bali each year.

I doubt that the NRL will let any more stars slip through their sticky fingers.

For the sort of package the Fifita will probably get, he will be able to afford a couple of nice first class trips a year, if that is his thing.

Travel is nice, for sure. But lots of money is probably better.
