Central Coast Rugby Union round 1 results:
Avoca Beach 38 d Warnervale 17
Gosford 26 d Woy Woy 20
The Entrance 33 d Kariong 6
Ourimbah 63 d Northlakes 5
Terrigal bye.
The two interesting results are Gosford winning by only 6 against Woy Woy who have struggled the last few years and the Rams comprehensive win over Kariong. I spoke with Bill the rams 2nds coach on Saturday and he said they were flush with numbers this year (70 odd coming along to training) through good junior retention (geez who would have thought that! - for those that don't know the lack of junior development and programs to recruit junior players is a major bugbear of mine with the ARU). Kariong are in the second year of a rebuilding phase - not sure if that is code for 'oh crap the money has run out we need to rely on the juniors we developed' (and then the memory that they forgot to develop juniors).
Speaking of juniors went along to the U8 gala day 9son was playing) on Saturday and was impressed with the number of kids and teams present, good signs for the future of rugby on the coast! I was particularly impressed by the Terrigal and Avoca teams on how well coached they are - it is no wonder they are both hovering around semis in seniors year in year out with the effort put into their junior teams!
