Central Coast Rugby Union round 1 results:
Avoca Beach 38 d Warnervale 17
Gosford 26 d Woy Woy 20
The Entrance 33 d Kariong 6
Ourimbah 63 d Northlakes 5
Terrigal bye.

The two interesting results are Gosford winning by only 6 against Woy Woy who have struggled the last few years and the Rams comprehensive win over Kariong. I spoke with Bill the rams 2nds coach on Saturday and he said they were flush with numbers this year (70 odd coming along to training) through good junior retention (geez who would have thought that! - for those that don't know the lack of junior development and programs to recruit junior players is a major bugbear of mine with the ARU). Kariong are in the second year of a rebuilding phase - not sure if that is code for 'oh crap the money has run out we need to rely on the juniors we developed' (and then the memory that they forgot to develop juniors).

Speaking of juniors went along to the U8 gala day 9son was playing) on Saturday and was impressed with the number of kids and teams present, good signs for the future of rugby on the coast! I was particularly impressed by the Terrigal and Avoca teams on how well coached they are - it is no wonder they are both hovering around semis in seniors year in year out with the effort put into their junior teams!

Thats a great result aussie. its always good when the kids enjoy playing rugby at these gala events. I was at a gala event last year, and in speaking to other attendees, numbers seemed pretty ordinary, and it seems over the last 2-3 years numbers have dropped. Is this correct? if so, whats changed? Have the tahs ventured up there?

not that I've heard, except the odd FIFO trial. The swans were at my son's school earlier this year and the mungos regularly play games up here, not to mention the mariners.

Not sure about declining numbers but noticed a few teams from last years U7s were mia, perhaps the players are still eligible for that age group.

I went up to Bowral yesterday, it's a beautiful time of year in the Southern Highlands. Bowral playing Shamrocks. Bowral have had a hard time of it in the last couple of years but are now rebuilding well and have good numbers.

Shamrocks got off to a good start putting on 36 points in the first half and only able to put on 7 points in the second and Bowral 5 points. The big difference were the Shamrocks outside backs, Bowral seemed unable to contain them, the outside centre Reece Peters constantly feeding the wingers and fullback coming in.

Always a pleasure to play Bowral, nice venue and congenial hosts (good steak sandwiches, need to work on the coffee, maybe a coffee van).

Terrigal 43 (Rob Richardson 2, Ben Heaton, Ryan Newland, Chris King, Daniel Sargeant tries; Adam Dankert 5 conversions, 1 penalty goal) d Gosford 10 (Simote Lauti try; Tim Hill 1 conversion, 1 penalty goal)
Avoca Beach 81 (Julian Bacigalupo 4, Peter Steele 2, Paul Farah 2, Emile Thomas, Brookelan Morgan, Mitch Graham, Peter Mitchell, Matt Maloney tries; Matt Maloney 8 conversions) d Northlakes 12 (Heath McDowd, Tane Nisbitt tries; Paul Wilson 1 conversion)
Ourimbah 50 (Tony Paulo 2, Brenton Law 2, Clint Guyatt, Simon Rudd, David Laidlaw, Hayden Cowley, Brenton Law 5 conversions) d The Entrance 0
Woy Woy13 (Tevita Tangimoa try; Matt Riddle 1 conversion, 2 penalty goals) d Warnervale 10 (Sam Soane, Brennan Wanstall tries)

A couple of interesting results in Terrigal giving Gosford a towelling. Gosford are regular semi-finalists and Woy Woy upsetting Warnervale, who were semi-finalists last year - Woy Woy finished with the wooden spoon after Northlakes withdrew from firsts at the beginning of the year. again it looks like Avoca and then daylight for the premiership, Terrigal will give them a run in the grand final but I wouldn't back them to win.

Talking to a Kiama supporter on Saturday who said that they had a number of S.D players return to the club this year, which has seen a greater commitment to training and an injection of energy into the club which has then attached player in (some from league). It certainly has reflected in their game over previous years (even thought they lost to Shamrocks).
Kiama had the better of the 1st half but lost their structure in the 2nd, which allow Shamrocks in in the end. A good clean entertaining game marred by a nasty head clash.

17 May Shamrocks 21 v 13 Kiama
