This is a very sensible decision, something I've called for for years. Pre-pads the field side of the goal posts was a vertical extension of the leading edge of the goal line. With ever larger goal post pads that's no longer the case; scoring a try in the modern era is effectively grounding the ball in the field of play. As pointed out by UtG the defending team hasn't been given a fair go here.

I think we can all think of instances where games have been ruined by marginal Reds. I'd like to see the initial 10-min period used to determine if it really was a Red card offence. If it's deemed to be Yellow, player comes back on but if it's Red he doesn't but can be replaced after a further 10 minutes. Not sure what you do in the case of an absolute screamingly bad Red that should've been penalty only but I guess those are so rare you've just gotta live with them being deemed Yellow.

Wam, my reading was the team loses a man for 20 mins. The infringing player can not return.

Agree with WoB - officials should be able to consider reverting penalty to YC with the 10 mins they have.

No, I don't like this. Have the decision reviewed for 10 minutes of game play, after they've probably wasted 5 minutes reviewing all the angles before actually giving the red card? Massive distraction. The whole idea of replacing the lost player after 20 minutes is to decrease the impact of marginal red cards, let's leave it at that. Marginal calls will still look marginal regardless of how many replays are looked at, leave the decision with the ref on the field and then move on.

WR (World Rugby) proposal is for an orange card. Off for 10 minutes while the action is reviewd. If deemed to be yellow, then player returns. If red, then player off and replaced after15 minutes. At least, that's my understanding.

The new NRL law "6 tackles to go instead of a penalty" is a concept we should take into any review of rugby laws.
League supporters and commentators appear to enjoy the faster pace of the game and ability of livelier halfbacks to zip around the tiring big men.
Rugby could lift its appeal with a wide range of innovations which achieve the same pace of game and space to attack.
e.g. faster scrum and lineout sets, no TMO, bring back rucking, fewer replacements, no tactical replacements, minimum number of 7 in a line out.

reckon they should get the red-carded perp sideline in a little dock, have them plead their case like a mini-judiciary as the game goes on. Have his mug in a little camera square in corner of telly screen ".....honest mistake Sir, I never saw him, accidental collision, come on Sir, first time offender, long time listener, first time caller, Sir, the boys really need me back out there, fatguts Akira is just walking around n..... oh, oh OH, OH SHIIIIIIIT, we just leaked another one Sir, those useless pricks, please Sir, please, what is your verdict on my very, very minor indiscretion here Sir.....

I didn't realise that made it out of the working party's discussions but I see now that it did as part of Law Trial 5:

Hence, massive distraction. 10 minutes of everyone pondering whether the player will come back, commentators sucking up more airspace with their opinions on whether it was red, yellow, just part of the game, not tiddlywinks, what about the other player's infraction, etc. Whilst the actual game is going on. No, no. Make the call on the field and stick with it.
