The weird part for me in these types of incidents is that is doesn't seem to matter how a player lands, the ref always seems to say that the tackler failed to bring them down safely. Don't get me wrong, this incident was particularly ugly but White landed legs first didn't he? Or would it be more the velocity with which he hit the ground or do you think the ref decided that Gill had little control over how he landed?

There is nothing inherently safe about that type of throw - it's quite high force / impact, and get the rotation wrong by a few degrees and it could be catastrophic - neck / head / shoulder / collarbone or vertebrae. Sure, they do it in the WWE or whatever they call that "sport", but they practise and train to do and receive those moves. I agree that it was more likely luck that he landed innocuously, rather than Gill ensuring he landed safely. I'll be amazed if Gill does not cop a few weeks. He's not a dirty player, but it was just plain stupid.

If you click on the link at post 226, it's evident that the first part of White's body to hit the ground was his upper arm/shoulder, his hips and then legs follow.

Which should have triggered a red card according to the laws and IRB/WR (World Rugby) directives.

Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player's feet are still off the ground such that the player's head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground is dangerous play.
http://laws.worldrugby.org/index.php?law=10

A directive was issued to all Unions and Match Officials in 2009 emphasizing the IRB’s zero-tolerance stance towards dangerous tackles and reiterating the following instructions for referees:
- The player is lifted and then forced or ‘speared’ into the ground (red card offence)
- The lifted player is dropped to the ground from a height with no regard to the player’s safety (red card offence)

They put it up on the big screen at the game there may have been a 13458 but Im pretty sure there wasn't. I should have put in a bid to win the prize they give away I said it looked about 13k in here.

As I posted elsewhere, the same Reds home match last year had a crowd of 30,000.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Gill. He should get suspended for a while. You just can't do what's he did. I didn't realise White landed shoulder first but not that it matters as per what Cyclo said. It was a poor example for what I was wondering but anyway, it's the wrong thread to discuss what I was. :)

And just look where Slipper is bound, or not bound as the case may be. Some infringement on both sides. All in all, Benny A got the better of James in that set of scrums, and James looked to be shattered by the last couple of resets.

I disagree entirely. Sio had Talakai under huge pressure, but I didn't think that Alexander had the better of Slipper, not even close (the commentators agreed). It looked like the opposite to me, despite Slipper's neck issue. On several of those scrums Slipper went slightly forward, but Sio wheeled through Talakai. The last scrum that the Reds held Slipper had a big shunt on Alexander again before Sio rescued the Brumbies scrum. If I recall correctly, the Reds had a seven man scrum at the time as well.

Yeah, Gill will probably be gone for about four to five weeks I'd say, plus one for the bye. It'll be like a 6 to 7 game suspension, plus 2 for deterrent, take a couple for contrition, take a couple for a clean record.

Just saw the replay, he's incredibly lucky he didn't get a red and can look forward to a few weeks holiday.

What was he thinking? Almost like some of those neck cranks you see the Saffas using to clear people out of rucks. He doesn't have form for this sort of thing does he?

Not generally no. Although over the past year or so he has lost it on the pitch and swung at players. He's often accused of being too much of a gentleman but it appears when he does lose his shit ,he loses it properly.

If I recall white was niggling Gill all game, even though White went in as scrum half but then committed to ruck as a defender. Gill got his chance to get White back but his frustration got the better of him. Its not Gills nature and they both had a bit of chat after the game.
He should will cop somethig don't know how long but its not good for the Reds.

The suspension guidelines for his offence are 4 weeks for lower end, 8 for middle range and 12+ for top end.

I'd say that he'll get 4-5 with some reduced and I'm sure he has a prior good record so that will might help getting a week off.

Yeah I had no impression of him being a dirty player or anything. I think he'll be given 4 weeks with a couple taken off for the clean record. Just really, really, dumb. Lucky it didn't end badly for White.

"he's a halfback and he's meant to be protected."
That's a ridiculous comment.

Sorry, but did World Rugby change the laws of the game recently or is this another case of where Bernie speaks and we have to finish the sentence for some most likely suffering a combination of butt hurt and "G'Rob"ism where you just twist things to suit?

Bernie statement is a generalised comment about a well know rule, not the actual circumstances of the incident.

For those who want consider an apparent "ridiculous comment" it is advantages and prudent to ensure that you say the words that plant the seed: in general play what Gill did was bad, doing it to a halfback is worse. I am pretty sure that the citing commissioner will be looking if he played the halfback!

You and how many have reacted to the supposed "ridiculous comment"?

Sorry mst but yours is also a ridiculous comment. The half back when you are talking in terms of the player being protected, is the guy at the back of the ruck about to play the ball, not the guy with a 9 on his jersey. White had joined the ruck and was no longer the half back for that ruck and accordingly not 'protected'.
If that's what Larkham was talking about then he is incorrect.

If on the other hand he was talking in general and he holds a belief that players that wear a 9 on their backs are meant to somehow be 'protected' then he is also incorrect.

In both cases it was a ridiculous comment.

Larkham wasn't speaking generally about a well known rule. He was speaking specifically about a particular incident. What Gill did was wrong, but not because of who he did it to.

Actually, just watching it again and Bernie is sorta right........

White is the halfback, and struggles to pick up the ball because Gill refuses to let go.........

White then gives him a nudge, and goes in deeper to try and get the ball and then Gill grabs him.........

It's a bit of a grey area but Gill was in the wrong on a few counts - not releasing, playing the halfback, and foul play.

Didn't he punch someone in the NRC and someone on here said he has brain snaps and does dumb things.

Edit:- I went back and read the above posts, so it seems as stated above when he loses his shit he brain farts in a massive way..
