Reds v Waratahs - Sat 15th Mar - Suncorp

I wonder if they’ll start Bryant or start Brial and play Uru at 7.

Bryant was excellent last year but it’ll still be a step down.

Sarcasm?

Boring Highlanders (home) Fiji (home) Force who seem to be the Force again (home)

I thought they might not win again until rd11 and it’s well on. Conceding 35 is disappointing but the loss shouldn’t be a shock to any Tahs fans and I don’t think it is. $3 for a reason.
imagine having 3 games at home In a row. the force have already done Perth, camberra, Perth, Sydney, NZ.

Great game from the Reds, not many errors in there. Kept some big guns quiet from the Tahs. I’m liking Lyangh more and more, nice having some kick distance too. There’s going to be some grest offloads in the team when you run 4. Salakai-Loto 5. Canham 6. Uru 7. McReight and 8 Wilson.

The Tahs are very painful to watch. Can’t convert pressure at all, how many fruitless 22 visits? I think T Wilson will be a good player though. Tupou looks done, his replacement went better. Loved Talatania, thought he outplayed Harry in that first half.

If McKellar is half the coach he’s meant to be he should be able to get this Tahs team to a better level.

Great vibes at the ground, was fantastic to see the high octane offload game executed properly, but also paired with a bit more intelligence and hard edged forward play. Lynagh and Paisami are so important to the control we need to make it all work (though I think Henry could also deliver there), their presence made a massive difference compared to last week. Really loved how much Canham and Anderson got into the contest too, like they've been in maroon all their lives.

Thought the tahs actually had a very good first 20 before falling to shit like the pudding team they are. They were doing some interesting stuff at defensive rucks that was working well for them. Will be interesting to see how far McKellar can take them this year, but I think they're in for a painful run with the Brumbies and a trip to NZ coming up. Talaitina looked like a beast at the ground, Tupou unfortunately looked like a shadow of himself. Kellaway also seems to be stifling Jorgo at times, but they may be trying to protect him a bit I guess.

I think it'll be Wright (if fit) or Bryant at 7. If not, Brial will probably play 7 before Uru, there's no reason to shuffle more than that. The only exception I can really imagine is if Salakaia-Loto is ready and they decide to play him or Canham at 6, then Uru would go to 7.

Very good gear from the Reds socials:

Watching Tupou slowely trundle after that runaway maul fucked me off massively.

After I read McKellars comments below I went back and watched, he had to referring to Tupou. he was watching and jogging backwards besides the maul. Players were running past him and joining.

But it was Richie Asiata's 22-metre rolling maul try which drew the most ire from McKellar, labelled "borderline embarrassing".

"It's hard to stop a rolling maul when you stand there watching it," he quipped.

Possible - but given he’s the Wallabies captain I reckon he’ll play all three.

Uru in a log jam of players to fill the 20 jersey. Gleeson has been pretty good this year, Champion de Crespigny very good too and Tom Hooper excellent. I love Uru but if Hooper keeps playing like he did last night he’ll be very hard to leave out.
Does Captain really matter… Wright was Captain then injured and he doesn’t deserve a spot in the group atm. Porecki was Captain before that then injured and he doesn’t either.

Valetini needs to show a few games but being a leading performer for the Wallabies for years now gives him more jersey owning than the C IMO.

McReight, Valetini, Uru, Hooper, Tizzano would be the top 5 backrowers right now. Then a group of Wilson, Gleeson, Reimer, Cale behind them.

Captaincy does matter and so does incumbency.

Wilson was also MOM for a lot of people both last week and this week. Topped both tackle counts with no missed last night and high in the carrier too so I don’t really agree with your ranking either. Pretty confident Schmidt will still have Wilson in his top 5.

Valetini just needs to show he is fit.

Edit: sorry - should clarify people had Wilson as Reds MOM last week, not overall.

Sure there is. Mass changes throughout the squad and a complete set of new coaches and GM. Returning players like Bell and Porecki have been injury plagued as well.

I think most Tah supporters would have taken a ladder spot at the end of the year from 6-8 as a big step.

apples and oranges when you look at the 2024 v 2025 squads.

theyve added what, 6 Wallabies to their team? There really are no excuses.
To me that’s even more reason. You’ve brought in 6 new players who haven’t played regularly with the others and who weren’t available for a good portion of the pre-season. Then you lose guys like Gordon, Foketi & Sua’ali’i. Amotesero isn’t hitting his straps, Lancaster needs work. I’d suggest Gamble has probably never been the player he was made to be and Leota seems to be struggling too. Tupou’s battles are well covered.

I don’t really care. if people think McKellar is a dud so be it. I just think it’s very early to make that assessment (and his failure at Leicester sounds to me to have mainly been a clash between coaching styles and playing group power which, IMO, isn’t always a reflection of the coaches ability).

A lot of people on here shitting on tupou but i actually thought it was one of, if not his best performance around the park this season. Fitness is still a major issue but i thought he was pretty effective until about the 30 minute mark, as opposed to last week when he was seagulling with hands on hips after 10 minutes. This week no dropped ball in contact, soem big hits and won his scrums. He wasnt the reason the tahs lost.

I thought the tahs were really good for the first 20 minutes and in a different time line kellaway doesnt get carded and murray doesnt get that freak try against the run of play and the game might have looked different. I thought the reds were just excellent and as soon as they opened up a lead, the tahs just had no idea how to claw the game back. I think the absence of gordan didnt help.

Still not sure we' have it in us to put this kind of performance on every week but i think teh reds are going to be really tough to beat at home this season - similar to the Crusaders.

Tahs fans shouldnt be throwing the toys out of the cot after one bad loss. The reds lost by a bigger margin last week and bounced back.
